The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I played during beta 4 and open beta and enjoyed it, though couldn't go on to a full post-release account.
I hear now that SOE is in control the game is being patched up like EQ2, making up for a bad/buggy start and becoming an enjoyable game. But I don't have first hand experience with it recently.
Was a good game, challenging but in a not-sadistic way with interesting class mechanics and the best crafting system I've seen in an mmo.
Yeah I was thinking of picking this game up also, but with all the bad things I've heard about it, I never did. And my computer probably couldn't run it very well anyway.
Has the game gotten any better since SOE took over?
Anyway, with all the new MMOs coming along ( Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa, Sword of the New World) I don't think i'll ever get around to trying this unless it really has gotten better, and has a larger community.
(also i'm pretty new to posting here so, hi everyone)
Windows XP
Memory: 1024MB RAM
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3200+
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700LE
Not the best, but it works for now. I do need to start upgrading though.
I'm not sure that'd even be playable (as in enjoyable, not just capable of turning on without crashing) at the lowest settings.
I picked it up just after release, after having played in beta. Performance improved, but I was running an a Athlon64 3500+, X800 XL, and 2GB RAM at 1280x800 and lowish settings, and it still was a slideshow in any remotely populated area. Out in a field without much going on, I'd get 15-20 FPS. In a group? I had to turn particle effects off to not crash.
The game had some cool ideas and I really liked the classes, but it was just too buggy and unfinished. I decided to put Vanguard back on the shelf and wait a year or so. If it's still around and the devs are doing good things, I'll give it another shot. It certainly has some promise. But if it's not? I don't think I'll lose any sleep.

Yeah I figured my comp would have some serious problems with it.
I agree the game has potential, and maybe when I can actually afford a good enough computer to run it, i'll give it a try.
(I think I might give Sword of the New World a shot. I wonder why there is no thread for it? theres one for Granado Espada, but thats back during beta, I think there should be a brand new one for it , oh well.
Well as for devs working on it they defenetly are, I can't speak much for other classes though I do see changes to them in the notes, but as for bard, wow has the class changed a bunch.
They added in a bunch of instant cast dot spells, some wicked dmg + debuff things, and added debuffs to a bunch of other old skills, and than gave us a ton of group debuff clearing abilities, turning the bard into a class that while may not do the top dmg, it buffs your group awesomely, debuffs the enemy, and clears any aliments off your own party.
Also the devs have added in monthly milestones, so they work towards a set of smaller goals every month and than release them, rather than just one large "in the works" over-reaching goals anymore.

From experience, Vanguard is unplayable with 1G of RAM. Unless you like 10-30 second system hangs with every chunk. At least that's how it used to be.
2GB RAM, Core2Duo, Radeon x1900, 10k RPM Raptor drive. The game still has framerate issues in a lot of places (for some reason the torch and night time really bog it down on my rig) with high-ish quality settings. Yeah, I wouldn't want to play it on a slower rig, you'd need to make it look like Quake 1 to make it playable.
It can look good though. I think it depends entirely on whom they had design the area; the Kurashasa starting area for example is abysmal (that's not snow, that's a blue reflection on the grassy ground). Other places? Very nice.
Man, what happened to this game? I remember for nearly a year people screaming in WoW, and posting on a lot of MMO message boards how they were only playing til this came out. Everyone in the "MMO community" seemed to think this would be the amazing next big thing/savior of the genre. Then, nothing. I mean I know it had a buggy start, but wow. It just seemed to crash and utterly burn, coming from some massive pre-launch buzz.
Sony's refusal to back up any more development time kind of killed the game. In late beta the game was shaping up well but not only were bugs prevalent but just sheer lack of polish showed all the way up to the 3 days free after release (I pre-ordered but didn't buy full retail in the end).

If you really think Sony was to blame for Vanguard's poor condition at release, Brad McQuaid has a sunny seaside resort in lovely Siberia he'd love to sell you.

The game is fun, and most if not all of the stability/crashing to desktop/lag/any other technical issues have been taken care of.
That said, the game does need a pretty good computer to run, or it plays like, and looks like ass.
If a bunch of people are interested in playing again, just send Fooms on the Flamehammer server an in-game mail and I can invite you to the guild.
any other questions shoot them my way.

Less lofty goals on the developers side would have helped too but where is the fun in that.

Everyone would of loved to see some games get that extra month or monhts or year of dev time but it's just not possible.
But on the bright side, the polish in the game is really nice atm.
As for server merges. not yet. but they should be in a week or 2 at most.
Supposedly there's going to be a significant relaunch this fall.
The sad fact is that the money ran out and the game was released too early.
I just hope there are still people around when that happens.
