I'd like to wall-mount the center speaker in my living room, above and behind my television. The problem is that I have taste, and I want something that goes well with my decor. I don't want something that looks like this:
I don't want anything that looks like the styles
shown on this page.
I don't want some cheesy wall-mount dealie like they have
here.
I like the look of these things from
Pottery Barn, but there's a small problem in that I've seen them up close, and they're just shitty laminate over some crappy hollow shell, I don't trust them to support the weight of the speaker because of the shoddy quality, and the construction makes it impossible to hack out the narrow groove I would need to make for the speaker cable to slip down behind it. (I'd happily run wires through the wall, except I'm currently renting.)
So basically, I want a good-quality wooden shelf that will allow me to run a cable behind it and can support about 5 pounds of speaker. My googling has brought up nothing, and I'm hoping I won't have to build something myself because I'm not that industrious. I don't mind painting, though; and I'd prefer the shelf to be in black, rather than have to match the stain color to the other furniture in my room.
I submitted an entry to Lego Ideas, and if 10,000 people support me, it'll be turned into an actual Lego set!If you'd like to see and support my submission,

you could also hit Bed Bath & Beyond or Linens & Things, but you'll probably see a lot of the same stuff you saw at Pottery Barn.
and ElJeffe, where did you get that over tv component/speaker shelf graphic? i've been looking for something similar to that.

You should've said, "lrn 2 internet n00b."
And I'll try again with the word "floating", which I hadn't used before, on account of sucking at terminology.
BTW, I have a pretty huge shelf (12" deep) above my TV that I bought at Ikea. It's held up with these brackets:
I made sure to find the wall studs when I hung it though. If you went with something like this:
you could even use hollow wall anchors. I don't know what your room looks like though, so those might be unsuitable. However, if you're not against the concept, you could probably find a nice combo of bracket and shelf.
...hence my use of the appropriate terminology in my first post, almost as if I were trying to give you a hint so that maybe you wouldn't need someone to spell it out for you, n00b
(okay I'm kidding I love you man plus I'm sorry about that toilet thread)
