I need to beat up more bad guys

Before I resort to going out and rebuying Ninja Gaiden Black for the third time (ye olde xbox stopped working so I had to sell my new copy of NGB, but I now own a 360) I need to know if I'm overlooking some good, satisfying beat em ups. Ones I'v played recentley and really enjoyed are God Hand, God of War 2, Viewtiful Joe/2, Ninja Gaiden/Black, TMNT for the GBA, Devil May Cry 1 and 3, Maximo 1 and 2, Castlevania SOTN/DoS and, bear with me here, Rainbow 6 vegas. Now, "R6 Vegas you say? Madness? Is there a melle move no-one told me about?", but I found it to be a pretty intense tactical shooter, much like Resident Evil 4 or, to a lesser extent, FEAR. They are very fun, challenging games with very tight control and combat systems. The shootouts were pretty damn intense in R6V terroist hunt multiplayer as I'd get swamped from all sides, bunker down and unload my machineguns into oncoming bad guys as I kept note of my current stock of weapons, their clips, the position of my team-mates, listening out for any incoming terroists and so on. It felt much like Resident Evil 4 in this respect, solid mechanics, fun gameplay and always challenging. I seperate R6V and FEAR from most other FPS games as they actually had intense shootouts that could last for a good long while, instead of the usual cannon fodder you find blocking your path in most other FPS games.

So, with this in mind, can anyone point me in the direction of a fun, challenging and intense action game with great combat mechanics? Preferably in the '1 guy VS hoardes of bad guys' catagory (for PC, XB360, PS2, GC GBA, DS).

I enjoy those kinds of games too, but I don't think are too many titles in the genre that you haven't beaten already.

If you like old school action games, the upcoming Spyro: Eternal Night for the GBA looked like it could have been the sequel to Astro Boy. Guardian Heroes for the GBA was decent, and you have Super Contra coming soon to XBLA.

I'm sure you are already waiting for the Stranglehold demo, which is one of the most visually intense shooters I've ever seen. You should also find the Closer to Truth mod for Max Payne 2. It makes Dead Man Walking feel like a brand new game.

Ninety-Nine Nights looked like it could've been right up your alley, if it weren't simply a case of mashing buttons through a swathe of enemies. Oh well.

Have you tried Gears of War yet? I wouldn't want to say "go buy now" if not, as it might be pushing your boundaries a bit, but i'd recommend giving it a try for solid, visceral combat with some good mechanics (reloading your gun is actually.. almost kinda fun).

Lego Star Wars - Seems fun but the combat was a little too loose for my liking. Fun fact, my 3d modeling/Maya teacher created the levels for LS1 and created the cutscenes for LS2

Closer to Truth mod for Max Payne 2 - I can't seem to find this, link? Although I'd like to try a brand new game I'll look into this

Stranglehold - Could be a fun rental possibly. Not too optomisitic right now with this one

Super Contra/Alien Hominid - Good call, might put down some MS points for that if all else fails

Dynasty Warriors 3 - looking for a good review now

Condemned - May consider renting it

Gears of War - I'v never liked the game for some reason.

This is probably a better suggestion than mine. You usually fight enemies in fairly big swarms, and theres usually a lot of gang members around the city even when you're not near a crime boss.

A little Jawa tells me that Lego Star Wars is going to put both games together as a "Saga Edition" for the PS3 and 360.

And Oroichi Warriors combines Dynasty Warriors (Chinese mythology) with Samurai Warriors (Japanese mythology) with the same tired and true gameplay.

Dynasty Warriors 3 - looking for a good review now

I don't know if you have any friends, and if you do, I don't know if you have the right kind of friends, but if you have the kind of friends dedicated enough to sit down and play a game for many hours in a row, Dynasty Warriors is the game to play, assuming that 2 guys VS hordes of bad guys intrigues you as much as 1 guy VS hoardes of bad guys.

What I'm trying to say is that it is more fun with a friend, not that it isn't fun alone, but split-screen co-op through the game is pretty much where it's at.

Here is the link for the Max Payne 2 Close to Truth mod. There are tons of other free mods here is well. You do have to register, but that takes less than 5 minutes.

Ragnarok Offline is a great 2D beat-em up, but the game is in Korean.

I'm going to take some liberties with the OP and say that Bomberman Live and World in Conflict are the most intense games I've played in awhile.

    Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
    Castlevania: Curse of Darkness
Zone of the Enders: the second runner
    Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams
    Shinobi
Nightshade (not quite as good as Shinobi, but good nontheless)
    Rygar

    those should keep you busy.

Rygar is damn good. it's short, but well worth the asking price you'll find now a days. something close to $20US.

Onimusha Dawn of Dreams is *fantastic*. it's onimusha except with more characters and a ton of RPG elements. tons of weapons and accesories you can mix and match with. highly recommended.

ZoE:the second runner. unbelievably good. Simply buy it if you like action-beat emup games.

I'd recommend lament of innocence over CoD if you want the great combat of devil may cry, but CoD if you want the "symphony" feel of the series. I really loved both of them, but they are definitely far from the excellence of ZoE2 or DMC3.

I keep hearing things about this, apparentley it's sort of a gang based streets of rage 2? I think I'll go and rent this tomorrow and see how it fares.

What I'm really after is a game with sublime combat mechanics. The reason I just beat God Hand again... and again recentley is because the core combat is just so much damn fun and is nearly perfect in terms of response times and fluidity. I can have as much fun on the first level fighting the first two bad guys with my regular combat moves as I can fighting Azel in the final battle, the range of moves and techniqes that Gene and Azel has by then are vastly different from the start of the game, but the combat mechanics are just so damn good it's just as fun. Same with Ninja Gaiden, fighting a lone (competent) ninja on the first level is just as much fun as fighting a group of demons, simply becuase the combat system is so fun, fast and challenging. Same with Viewituful Joe and Devil May Cry 3, combat is halla fun all the time, no matter who you fight.

I think a good game in this respect has to have a great core combat system that lets you kick ass in an effective, fun manner right from the start (excluding buying/earning new moves) and bring variety to the table in terms of how your enemies deal with you and react to your sweet moves. Simply put I'm still going to go out and buy Ninja Gaiden Black tomorrow but I'm interested in picking up the Warriors too. If I were to pick it up without checking a review or renting it, based on what I'v described what I think a good beat em up should be, do you think I'd enjoy it?

I love my beat-em-ups but I nearly started a new God Hand run earlier but stopped myself and decided to do a little research on similar games before I started GH up again. Same with NG black, I love the game and have sunk many, many hours into it, but I'd like to try something new before resorting to re-re-playing it.

EDIT: I can honestly say I will never, EVER get tired of kicking the Mad Midget 5 into orbit or mach speed knee-ing some-one in the head, or kicking a demon in the nads then making him explode with the poke of god.

Otogi 1 and 2 are great, especially 2.

I'll recommend Castlevania: Curse of Darkness. Lament of Innocence is good, but Curse is better.

Shinobi is hard as balls. I assume Nightshade is too. Still totally playable, though. A bunch of guys around here like them.

I found Rygar to be painfully slow. It's pretty, and the music is good, but the gameplay didn't grab me.

I only like about 2 or 3 parts of ZoE2. Too much of the game has stupid missions or people to protect. The gameplay is nice when the game finally lets you do what you want. There are just too many restrictions for me to endorse it.

You know, I'v had a thought Ninja Gaiden. It's a given that a turn based version of Ninja Gaiden would kind of defeat the point of the game, right? I wouldn't say so exactly. Imagine if you just removed the one thing that makes NG so damn hard for most people, the need for quick reflexes. Take the NG battle system and for every move, note how long the animation takes to play out. When enemies appear, you can move Ryu around as normal until the enemy starts an attack animation. The game pauses and you can simply choose what move you want Ryu to do and where to direct it. Whatever the result of that move, when the animation of Ryu's move/hurt animation is over the game pauses again and you can choose what move to use next, how long Ryu should wait before making another move, etc. When the game is paused you have full acsess to the camera and can see enemies from all sides.

Does anyone else think this would ease up the difficulty and make NG just as fun to play as it's regular reaction based counterpart?

Hell yes, that game had an awesome combat system, I ended up finishing it twice and am sorley tempted to buy it again. Damn, I'd completley forgotten about that game, it's why I bought and N64 actually. The idea for the NG turn battle system would be similar to HH but you would be making descisions while Ryu is mid-air, chopping a ninja's head off while another ninja is about to stab you in the face.

It's a fun game. Silly japanese humor, and optional missions that add difficulty and rewards. Lots of cool costume accessories, as cj said. And the accessories modify your stats, so that's cool too.

It also has a dual-sided cover insert.

Awesome, thanks guys, after checking some reviews I'v decided I'm going to go out and buy The Warriors and Shinobi tomorrow, but I have a quick question about Shinobi. Apparentley there are quite a few lock-on and camera issues (and 'tedious' level design with 'frustrating' platformy bits, but I'm just interested in the combat right now). These lock on and camera isses aren't game-breaking are they? Is the lock on just a little fiddly and overley sensetive/awkward or will it have me cursing the game's name when it causes me to die for the 10th time?

I guess that's about all the stuff here in my recent collection that I'd classify as an action brawler pitting you against hordes with supremely enjoyable combat. I know you specifically end up performing bizarre experiments to improve the longevity of your games so I'm very curious to see what you can do with some of my favorites!8-)

I never did beat Ninja Gaiden because I got lost after fighting some centipeeds and wasn't having any fun having to tightly manage my items and saves, like DMC so I didn't care for the game. I am very curious about God Hand but I hear it is just rape city hard and I could do without that kind of stress no matter how bitchin the humor and moves are. Can I handle it dudes?

I'm about halfway through Warriors, I'm a Rockstar whore admittedly and I dig the movie, you'll appreciate the feel of the Streets of Rage vibe and even the little arcadey sidescroller knockoff in the game. Really the Co-Op is just funny as hell to play, beating each other up and raising hell on 20 dudes at once.

Shinobi only has a couple of levels in the middle that have bogus instant death pit jumping bullshit, I never struggled with the camera too badly probably because I was scrambling to keep my combos up and just loved racing around the environment, if you can tolerate Ninja Gaiden you can tolerate Shinobi, even dated as it is in comparison.
