Ok, as with many people around here, i dont keep up with certain things. Some people its PC, or DS's, or 360's, or what have you. So im in the market for an Mp3 player after many years of obstaining, due to a change in my career that now allows me to listening to music on the job. The catch is, it MUST have an AM/FM tuner as weather reports are fairly vital to the job. That and sometime its just nice to listent he radio instead of mp3s. Space is very confined, and it seems pointless to have a radio, as well as an mp3 player when i can get them as one.

Id like a large screen since theres no need to worry of scratching, and i like nice shiney things. Battery life is of no concern. So far ive checked out the big two i know of, the Zune, and the ipod. The ipod doesnt have an am/fm tuner so it was out first thing. So i guess im really asking... Is the zune worth $250, or are there other compairable things to it?

I love my Zune, and it really sounds like it's what you're looking for.
Also, if you do get the Zune, I recomend the Zune pass. Unlimited download of songs a month for 14.95 is pretty damn cool, even if you are just renting the music.

I personally am in the Samsung camp because amongst other things, they have the loudest volume. And that's important to me. But whatever you do, there is SO much better out there that iPod. avoid it like the plague.

Well, my gf mainly hearts one of them. I personally think it's worth it. And Zune pass is great.

    People actually lease mp3's here?

I say lease because you sure as hell aren't buying it.

I'm still going with the iPod. It's functional, has dozens of accessories (icluding a shower-speaker thing from Sharper Image).

I have a Zune as well, and while the software you have to install to sync it to your computer sucks shit, you can easily get over that fact because the Zune is really nice. My girlfriend and I both love ours, I totally think it's worth $250.

I have an ipod video - but if you are concerned because of scratching it, avoid it like the plague. The last gen models get scratches if you just breath on them. (unless you put it in one of the "fully body skins" - as I did). The advantage of the iPod is that its popular and because of that you'll find applications for nearly every OS which will help you to fill it up with music. With the Zune you are most likely chained to Windows and (as far as I've read in this forum) the craptacular Zune syncing software. (depends if you care about other operating systems)

The sound quality has been improved in the latest generation and mostly depends on the earphones you use - if you are going to use the standard head buds, well its your fault then. Personally I don't need sound quality on a portable device which is comparable to high end sound systems.

If your music /video collection isn't to huge, maybe the PSP could be something to consider. A used one can costs less than a ipod nano. (its even better if you install the custom firmware on it). Disadvantages: The size, you need a memory stick.

edit: ok ignore my comments - you require a fm tuner. I should read the OP more carefully.

The Wii will play MP3 just fine and there are a lot of good internet radio stations these days.

    Ooooh. That MP3.

The Zune is alright, but a bit pricey. I bet you could find something that would do the job you are look for for about $200.

    Iriver Clix 2

It's in the category of the ipod nano (4gb flash-based), but at a lower price and more features. It's got radio. Bought mine for $189 + armband/silicone skin. You don't want to buy an ipod for the ipod. The ipod is average at best as an mp3 player, what it has going for it is a vast array of accessories since it's so popular.

    http://www.pocketables.net/2007/04/review_iriver_c.html

Good detail in the review, but a bit of scrolling. Most interesting bit is the youtube video that sweeps through the main features and how the interface is used.

Part of why I like this so much isn't the larger screen or the extra features, but the interface. Since the D-click works off the corners and not off conducting electricity through your finger, I don't need to look where I'm hitting. Particularly handy when it's on my armband while I'm running. I just reach over and touch my arm, no looking for buttons.

Zune all the way. It sounds exactly what you're looking for, although it doesn't do AM radio (i'm pretty sure...I never listen to AM). Love every aspect of my Zune and couldn't be happier from making the change to my Zune from the iPod.

Do get a good set of headphones. That's always a must.

You could find sales on the Zune for $199. Keep an eye out for them on sites like Ben's Bargain or Slick Deals

Zune + Zune Pass = Win.

    ++Positives
    ZUNE PASS
    Huge screen
    Good Sound & Video Quality
    Easy to use interface
    Unique double shot finish
Can tell the sheeple to stuff it

    --Negatives
    Not as fashionable as iPod.
Not as popular as iPod, so it's harder to find accessories.
    ZuneMarketplace software kinda sucks.
It's the bigger of more 30gb PMPs

    I can recommend SanDisk's Sansa e200 series.

You can get the 8 Gb version for $149 from Dell, and it plays mp3s, does voice recording, fm radio, picture viewing, and full motion video. Also doubles as a flashdrive for portable storage.

My only knocks on it are that navigating the menuing system takes a little getting used to and that it relies upon Windows Media Player 10+ to manage playlists. I was really hoping for full WinAmp compatibility, but it wasn't meant to be.

Oh, and the available accessories for the Sansa is dwarfed by iPod options. When browsing the Apple iStore, I really wish they would have made a compatible interface.

I love my Zune, but it isn't worth $250 IMO. Luckily, you can get it for less than that online, depending on where you look. A bunch of places sell it for $200 or $210 now, and if you catch an online deal you can get it for even less.

I haven't used the Zune, but I'd recommend the Creative Zen Vision M over the iPod. Bigger screen, DivX/XviD support, radio/voice recording, and $90-100 cheaper at 30GB. No AM radio.

The big seller for me was that the screen is half an inch bigger than an ipod's.

Besides the Zune can anything even compete with the iPod? Both of them have dozens of gigs of space and more than enough room to hold everything. It seems like every single other player is a puny 2 or 4 gigs and cost just as much. Why would anyone buy things with such small memory amounts when they could spend the same amount and get 60 gigs of space? Sure, you could switch memory cards but why would you want to carry around 10 cards just to get what the iPod or Zune offer built in?

Cos the Zune and iPod have hard drives instead of flash memory? Leads to them being too big (for some) to take to the gym, jogging, etc. Also gives them shorter battery lives than a flash player. And they're far more fragile.

EDIT: My (admittedly old) HDD player skips. Don't know if that's still a problem with them, but I know flash players wouldn't have that.

I skate with my zune and I've taken multiple falls including one landing directly on the zune and that thing is still chugging. I'm quite suprised I think that double-shot shit on the outside layer does quite a bit.

Yeah, I use my Zune in the car (with the FM transmitter) and I've hit some nasty fucking bumps and potholes and whatnot, and nary a skip. My girlfriend even dropped it in the car once while changing a song and it was just fine. Perhaps they've improved the HDD MP3 players since you bought one?

Although you're right, I like flash drives a lot more. If only they were as cheap and could hold as much as a HDD, then I'd be all over them.

it all depends on if the drive is being accessed or not. even HDD based players try to access the drives as little as possible to save battery, if the player is knocked in the wrong way, even with a little amount of force when the drives being accessed its very easy to pooch the hd. on the other hand if the drives not being accessed its very hard to damage it. i went w/ my flash based player because a. pretty much indestructible b. 50+ hours of battery life C. much smaller than an hdd based player and it has a much better screen than the latest ipods and the zune (displays more colors, better contrast etc)

quoted for Truth. I love my Sansa. I use Rhapsody to manage the songs, though.
The best part: you can get a new battery for it for $10 and install it yourself. Also, 25 hour battery life.
