I've been getting laughed off of other forums I visit, but I figured you would all want to know what the hell is going on.
E3 2007: Hannah Montana: Music Jam -- Second Opinion
Seriously, we really like this game!
by Nix
July 13, 2007 - It's not often that IGN's Mark Bozon is right about anything, but this is one of those rare instances where you should listen to something that doughy man has to say. We previously posted impressions of Hannah Montana: Music Jam on the Nintendo DS earlier this week, but to confirm that our glowing impressions were not those of a sleep-addled mind, we took a look at the game again. And guess what? It's a really awesome music title for the portable system!
Developed by Gorilla, Hannah Montana: Music Jam is a music title that lets you create your own music as well as play around with musical instruments and also test your skills in a variety of minigames. The music creation mode allows you to play each instrument -- lead guitar, rhythm guitar, bass and drums -- and sequence together recordings for musical performances. The guitar portion of the game that we played was something just short of amazing on the DS, as you can strum individual strings on the guitar or stroke chords to play, with a convincingly realistic guitar sound with what you play. Holding directions on the D-pad allows you to adjust which chord fingering you hold, and there are modifiers on the sides that you can tap for more different sounds. You also have access to a whammy bar to distort your strums.
Then there's the gameplay, a series of minigames based on the Hannah Montana show. There's a lot to do here, including dance challenges, musical challenges (all different depending on what instrument you use), music video performances and more, all using touchscreen gameplay to create the musical experience. These minigames use a variation of the music performance engine, but it's simplified (ignore the screenshots if you're worried that there's not much to the guitar play) to make it fast and playable. The game's music is all licensed tunes from the Hannah Montana show, and although it's designed for girls and kids, there is a difficulty setting for those who like the game and want a challenge.
You may have to wear a hat and a beard if you're a sensitive man who doesn't like to be seen playing girlie kiddie games, but Hannah Montana: Music Jam might be well worth picking up for music fans. The DS version will be released in October.
Gameplay demo of the free play music mode
Okay, so after watching the IGN on-stage demo video:
• You can record your own songs (about 2 minutes in length) and layer the instruments yourself by playing them on the touchscreen. With guitars (rhythm, lead and bass), you select chords with an onscreen menu and the Dpad and strum with the screen; you can pick individual strings and strum up, down or however you want, plus there's a whammy bar.
• You also play drums with the screen: a full drum kit, with a kicker, snare, three toms, hi-hat, two crash cymbals and a ride.
• You can layer the tunes track-by-track, with or without a metronome. In the onstage demo, he laid down a rhythm guitar riff and then layered drums over it while the first track played in the background, and you can save your songs.
• Multiplayer mode -- you can actually jam with three friends in local wi-fi and record it all together.
Newsweek's N'gai Croal couldn't shut up about how awesome it was on one of the post-E3 1up Yours shows, and I haven't found many impressions but the ones I've found have been all very, very positive. I can't be the only one really interested in seeing how this works. Just leave your pride at the door.

Newsweek hire Klingons now?
No, but seriously, this is pretty cool. Good on the developers to turn potential shovelware into something creative. Kinda reminds me of how good some licensed games were in the 16-bit era. You wouldn't ever think of purchasing a Disney game today.
edit: Oh, it's just "I'm a secret pop idol" show. The kind the Japanese have been doing for way way too long.
Yeah man, I saw her album at #1 on iTunes for like two weeks, and I have never heard of or seen this person anywhere else.
Newsweek is not high on my list of sources I would trust for gaming, movie or music impressions.
N'gai knows what he's talking about though.
N'gai knows his shit, though. I figured you guys would recognize names like N'gai and Chris Kohler.
It's a show on the Disney Channel, apparently about a girl who has two identities:
One as a normal kid in school... high school maybe, I don't know how old she is, and I think she's supposed to be a loser in school.
And the alter ego is a pop star named Hannah Montana.
My kid sister loves it. It's pretty much like any little kid show though.
But yeah, the concept here is kinda interesting, I'll have to take a peek.
It's crazy. I just looked at the Nielsen SoundScan and the Hannah Montana album is number 2 on the charts beating out Linkin Park, T.I. , Smashing Pumpkins and Fergie. Insanity.
Man... the idea of layering your own tracks sounds awesome, but a limit of 2 minutes? I want my Stairway, damn it!
EDIT: 4 chords... and you can pick single strings .... man I'm so putting Radiohead's Creep on this. :P
...
Is guitar only.
Don't get me wrong... I completely expect to pick up Jam Sessions when it comes out, but it's missing so much downright obvious stuff (like track layering, individual note picking, and chord creation) that it's actually somewhat frustrating.
Hopefully there'll be a Jam Sessions 2 and it'll be more worthwhile.
And if you don't know who N'Gai Croal is you should really go read his blog. Even if you don't like him, he's done some of the most interesting game journalism thats come out in the last few years (including a nice interview with the guy who made Jam Sessions, a few months back), and is becoming fairly important in terms of the main-stream gamer community.
According to Billboard it was the #1 album of 2006, with the most Hot 100 singles of any album ever.
Alright, that's not true, but I'd still buy it.
I thought I had heard about the second Hannah Montana DS game being good here, although honestly I couldn't tell if it was sincerity or forum sarcasm. :P I remember it being known as a pretty solid Phoenix Wright-esque adventure game.
If it's even half as good as I'm thinking, I don't care if I have to bring it home in a brown paper bag like a porn mag. Luckily, GameFly doesn't judge me!
This and Duck Amuck were apparently the 2 best DS games shown at E3. Still even though the games have appeal they will be overlooked due to their licenses, which is a shame.
It better be like, </=$20
In some states yes!
Considering the sales of previous Hannah Montana games and the amount of work looks like went into it, you shouldn't expect anything less than full price.
The 1up guys said this game is basically Rock Band for DS.
Disney has an eye for this shit.
Alex Mack was Nickelodeon
pretty sure Billy Ray's kid is 12.

Burn on me, I guess.
Though that other girl on the show was pretty hot.
Might as well change the thread title to let's talk underage preteen disneychannel stars and their various degrees of fuckability.
and i'm pretty sure that's not cool
Totally!

I'd nail Othergirl, but Raven could watch if she felt like it.
This is just a tribute.
