Need advice on my commute to school...

Starting a new university in fall. Applied late and as a consequence I don't have on campus housing. I have exhausted any off campus housing options as being too expensive or too shitty.

So I'm left with commuting from where I live now. That will be about an hour each way. I can't decide whether this is a good idea or whether it's going to get old and tiring really quick. I'm planning on taking a light load of classes in the fall to make this easier. I have guaranteed on campus housing for the spring.

Do any of you guys commute like this? Will it suck? Should I not go to school in the fall and start in the spring?

I know enough kids in class who travel for longer than hour each day, it's doable, better than living in an overpriced shitty room, at least. Is public transport an option or are you in the US? You can use your travelling time to study, then.

I'm going to Stony Brook University on Long Island, NY. The only public transport option is by train. Where I live now there is no direct route, I'd have to switch trains at a hub (Jamaica). It ends up being much longer. Plus I'd rather have the peace of mind of knowing I have a car with me.

Spring semester is only four months. Hopefully, global warming kicks in and it doesn't snow much. :P

JUst make sure your first class doesn't start until 10 AM and you should be good. 1 hour is not that bad.

It'll get old quick, especially if you only have one class a day.

However, you will miss out on the social life of university, which is about as important as your education in your first year. I would try very very hard to find somewhere to live closeby so you can go to parties, hang out with friends, bring home girls, even if it is shitty. Shitty builds character.

I'd agree, unless you'll be able to get around the distance gap with the social aspect for the fall semester even getting a shitty nearby option is preferable. It might not be the greatest, but it'll be yours.

Granted you'll be getting on-campus housing in the spring so it's really a matter of whether you can handle three months of being generally cut-off from the social stuff, or if you'll be able to find ways to get involved meet people etc.

I can't make that bold enough to do it justice. Having spent my first year away from home, and the second with my dad, I can honestly say you will be missing out on a lot of life that you won't ever get to live again. Being so far from the school doesn't help much at all, unless you make some friends in the dorms that will let you crash there.

I had a 40 minute commute for my entire undergrad education, drove back home, went to work. The drive never bothered me (leaving at 7 am for an 8 am class DID, but the drive didn't)

I missed out on a lot of the college experience (I caught a little when I moved away for grad school). I would strongly recommend not commuting longer than you have to. If you choose to commute now, start looking for a closer place / try to get on campus housing in the spring.

The drive will most likely suck, especially with day-to-day traffic (I dont know if you have driven there/back in stuff like that).

However, it's not all bad. If your classes arent all in one block, this basically forces you to stay on campus between classes, which is great for meeting people and making friends. Also, if you get really bored, you can study/do school work, although I wouldnt recommend doing that until youve met at least a few people through classes and the like, otherwise you will most likely be completely missing college life. If the car is not needed by the rest of your family, even if you have a morning class and then nothing for 7 hours and then a night class, stay on campus. Just try to make sure that the friends you make on campus are of diverse groups so youre not calling the same people day in day out.

I have a good friend who lived off campus all 4 years of university and he still participated in college life because he hung out on campus all the damn time and made friends that he could always see/crash at/meet new people through.

    OP, I'm going there too.

From what I hear, it's so crowded that everyone is tripled. I can't say that commuting isn't a better option.

But um, if there's really nothing you can do about it, you'll have to commute. Do you have any family or friends on Long Island? Maybe you could stay with them during the week, then go home on weekends. Half the school commutes, and so forth.

I drive an hour every day to work. Yeah its gonna get annoying quick but its not really that bad. Like someone else said before the big problem is missing out on the social aspect of college but its only till spring so i say go for it. Some college experiences / social activities is better then no college experiences / social activities.

I knew a guy who lived in his car for 3 months just so he didn't have to drive home every day

advice: take a shitty place, there's always shittier places. Shitty places make for great stories and good character

You're only doing it for one semester, so don't worry about it. Just make an effort to be involved in social activities when you are on campus, perhaps ones that happen before or after your classes so that you aren't driving back and forth.

What about getting a roommate and splitting the rent on one of those expensive places you mentioned?

Well I was once faced with an option like that.
I was either going to live with my mum and leave from 6:00 to get to school for 8:30 every morning or stay with my dad and leave at 7:00 to get to school for the same time.
Needless to say I live with my dad now.
And yes, if you don't have a car and you're doing public transport it will suck.
    It will really really suck.

Unless you like public transport, then it will be like riding a unicorns back each day into the joyous sunset of a summers day.
