Disgaea 3 Announced for PS3, with Screenshots, but...
After years of sucking time away from PlayStation 2 owners, Nippon Ichi is finally moving on to the next generation. At Sony's PlayStation PremierE event in Tokyo today, the third party publisher formally announced Disgaea 3 for the PlayStation 3.
Currently, we have just few details on the game, which is fully titled Makai Senki Disgaea 3. Once again a strategy RPG featuring a variety of selectabe units, the title appears to take place in a school setting. One screenshot shows a school backdrop with a menu prompting the player to change seats, go to your home room, or take part in graduation and entrance ceremonies.
The two screenshots we have suggest that Nippon Ichi hasn't quite abandoned its current set of visual tools in the move to the PS3. For a look at 2D sprites against 3D backdrops all presented in HD, check out the screens.
Disgaea 3 is set for Japanese release this winter.
That looks pretty terrible even by PS2 standards. Disgaea's gameplay never really hit the mark for me either. I was hoping for a proper next-gen SRPG graphically, so I am a little sad.
Did you see the spite work for Odin's Sphere? And that was the PS2. This is kinda sad actually and I think their decision to release on the PS3 is a poor one. If that's all graphical power they are going to use, they might as well release on the ps2 and sell a ton more copies.
It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.
What I don't understand is: Why are they bothering with the PS3?
They obviously don't need the damned thing.
But again, NIS is a small developer with only a handful of people. They don't have the monetary, and labor resources to make "Next-Gen" games.
It's like suddenly demanding the developers of Melty Blood to make a Next-Gen, HD version of the game.

hooooleey shit! i take a half-day off of work one day out of the year because of ball-busting allergies, and this is what i get. let's see...
Quick point - Nippon Ichi Japan isn't 'relatively new'. They've been around since 1994, which in my book is pretty damn good for a console-only company.
The reason why N1 seems to 'suck sony's cock' is that when they first started up, sony had a huge hand in supporting them and helping them get a foothold in the market. if it werent for sony, they would've folded long ago. i agree that making modern business decisions based on a decade-old relationship isn't exactly sound, but it's still something to consider.
Disgaea 3 HAS NOT been confirmed as an exclusive. It's simply been definitely decided that it will be on PS3 - the other systems are still being considered (or were, last i knew).
Even if it came out only on PS3, there's still a pretty good chance of us at least breaking even. Our business model assumes low sales anyway, so our risk isn't too high.
I don't know anything about PSN or downloadable hoo-ha or anything.
I agree that the graphics aren't nearly worth the price tag, and I'm hoping and praying they're still working on them. As someone who's such a big fan of theirs that I moved 2,000 miles to try and get a job with them, I would not pay $60US for what little we've seen so far.
oh and people who want this to fail - shush! we need this to do well to give us more money to develop/fund other games that, with any luck, ill have more control over.
I'm not paying for a PS3 for something that would be equally awesome on the PS2, great for current PS3 owners, but I'm betting the majority of the series' fans aren't

Odin Sphere is probably the most gorgeous sprite game I've ever played. I understand that NIS has a style with these titles, but when they can't even compare with a PS2 title, there is cause for concern.
Sorry but while I will definitely buy Disgaea 3 when it's eventually released here, I do think those sprites are blurry messes. It doesn't take a developer the size of Square Enix to draw high resolution sprites.
There is no excuse for releasing a game that looks like this. If the company can't afford to redraw the sprites (since obviously they're just using the ones from past games), they should stay out of this generation.

While I agree, like I said before, that they shouldn't have bothered with the PS3.
It's still a little nonsensical to expect them to update their sprite graphics at this point, when the argument could have easily be made long ago with La Pucelle, and Disgaea.

Meh. I wouldn't mind fully 3D Disgaea. With realtime physics. And dinosaurs.
Disgaea level in LittleBigPlanet? That'd be fucking awesome.
victor_c26: This is a different situation, the PS2 was focused towards the SDTV market, the PS3 isn't. IMO if they are developing a full-priced PS3 game then they need to draw sprites that don't look like blurry messes at 720p (I really don't want to imagine how bad they'll look at 1080p).
Or price it lower. Or use some new-fangled AA, AF, and other acronyms.

I bet most of the ps3 power is being used for damage calculations, which is why the graphics aren't much better. The max level will be 999999 in disgaea 3.
They should release a special edition for $10 more. It should say on the box "If we sell 1000 of these, we'll finally draw a new set of sprites."
Edit: Or $20 more. Christ, I'll pay just... you're the only people that make these! I love NIS, but we need a new goddamn anything, not just "You can throw.... cars!".
Err... every previous NIS game we've seen has had a new set of sprites, they just only have the budget to do them at an archaic resolution. If they ARE reusing sprites, then it's a sign that the budget for this game is even lower than their usual, possibly because even they don't expect this to sell as well on PS3 as it would on PS2? Hey, maybe if they suddenly decide to start using the same sprites for generics from game to game then they'll actually be able to make a set of them at a decent res, it's not like they don't usually reuse the same character designs anyway.
I'm going to keep believing that somehow those are very early screenshots of the game and those sprites are simply placeholders until the magician that lives in the NIS office finishes the higher res sprites...

Seriously ... as much as the winds of Japanese popularity would dictate that they should move to the DS or the Wii for this, they have a lot of loyalty for Sony who helped them out a lot. But that in no way prevents them from just staying on the PS2. Especially since the PS3 should play a PS2 game anyway.
What's this? Young Etna? (Not really, but y'know, whatever)
Looking through them...
The scan with Young Etna (Rasberrill?)... There's a tower of characters in one screen, with someone perpendicular to it... looks like they're walking up it.
That last scan, is that dude holding a GIANT SWORD? Awesome.
Also, people holding platforms for other guys to walk on? Nice to see some fresh gameplay mechanics.

They should...they should fix that. Then I'm totally sold.

Don't expect FFXIII...
You heard the man! Come on, this bar is heavy! It'll take at least three men to lower it!

Dang, should have searched a little more throughly.
In any case, this thread does not really have a purpose now. The Mods can do what they please with it.
I really, really love NIS PS2 titles, but they simply need to evolve at some point.

That's kinda cool ... but seriously. Let Street Fighter II die. Remaster Street Fighter III 3rd Impact or Street Fighter Alpha 3.
You know, this probably won't be out here for at least a year, if not more. I don't think you need to rush out to buy a PS3.
I think this game should change it's name lest my heart be broken into even smaller pieces.
Carry on and sorry for the intrusion.
I figured it merited a bump.

Looking pretty good.
