This is our mine map right now.
I intended to use it to gauge where we should go next, because it would show when we're three away from a vein, and had plans drawn up on it to maximize our mining by making parallel hallways 6 spaces apart (prospecting is supposed to show what is within 3 squares). The dark grey squares were prospects for rockshards, and the light ones are ones that "should" be empty. My entire mining world came to a shatter when suddenly I found some lead without warning (aka, boxes 3 spaces away weren't prospecting as "lead here sonny boy"). So I'm not really sure what should be done--maybe prospect only works on the surface?
So is the PA town really far away from Newtown? Because last night I tried to make it there and I kept running, but I never saw any kind of sign where the road turns to Bearback mountain like people said in this thread to look for.

Have you looked at the map(s)? Bearback mountain is by the fork in the Highway to Hell, turn North there and follow the road until it turns into sand, look for a path branching West, follow that to the dead end, facing the edge of the road, turn 45 degrees, and go down Death Valley (which is actually two valleys). Once you hit the lake, head North once more and ye shall see The Buttes.

Very. You get to the sign when you run out of road.
Personally, with the high volume of bear attacks, the giant hill with cobblestone on it, and the fact that if we ever upgrade to a bigger town we will be wedged in by lakes, I think we should move to those tundras Kazhiim found. But whatever, there is a mine or something near by.
Cant somebody (I'm looking at you Kazhiim) show me the general layout of the camp? I need to know where to put dirt and stuff. I guess I'll be one of the construction builders. (I'm also Ursus, by the way)

Soon enough we'll have people strong enough to break apart the roads, we'll have guards for the bears once we settle, and there's plenty of room to spread out along the sides of the lake.
According to the recent patch notes, there's some sort of restriction on non-premium players doing stuff near roads. Anyone know what's up with that, and if it screws us over?
I'm feeling adventurous so I'm gonna see if I can find my way on my own. So far it's a lot of walking, constant worrying that I'm somehow on the wrong road, and the dodging of atleast 1 scorpion that was camping out on the middle of the road. Exciting!

Watch out for the valleys, there are a ton of monsters in them. Just keep running as straight as you can, you should eventually hit the big lake. Make sure you're not holding anything heavy.
Well, I hit a T in the road and a sign that says bearback mountain, so I guess this is the right road.
It might be a good idea to head south for a bit, there's a lake you can drink from. I'm not sure where the next source of water is, though there might actually be one to the north anyway and you can ignore me.
Alright, that was a horrible failure. I wandered down the dirt road, hit someone's house and decided it looked nothing like either map. I tried setting off into the forest, eventually hit a dirt road again while running away from a vicious wolf (that wouldn't stop chasing me) to run right into a scorpion because I wasn't looking where I was going.

Blast, I was so close to the PA town but some scorpion raped me before I got there. Oh well. If Reyke is on here, thanks for helping to get me that far. Hopefully tonight I will try again and this time I will make it to the village. (my ingame name is Jobu)

I am now at a sign that says "curtains memorial highway - maintained by bearback mountain"
Is that the place I should be turning, because the road does not fork from here, nor is there anywhere close for about a couple minutes worth of travel. Then taking the road down at the end where it turns into a T according to the maps and directions, only leads to a dead end.
I think the problem is, people knew how to get to the PA town before people started extending stuff...

Keep going straight. You'll know when the road ends and you have to turn north.
Tried that, I end up in the woods RIGHT as the road turns into dirt, with a little fenced in place, and nowhere to go (as in there is no dirt road to follow)
Heh. I just walked the route again, found where I went wrong on the dirt path and merrily continued on. Turns out that dirt route I hit the first time (running around aimlessly lost in the woods) was the right path. I looted my own corpse, dodge the scorpion on the road and am now getting myself ready to sprint through the woods hoping to not run across any bears.
My sense of direction is awful. First I walk in a circle, now I think I might have gone in a wrong direction again. Ah well, I'm feeling like an explorer right now. Narrowly avoided death by brown bear because I ran into someone's settlement (in the middle of nowhere, what a stroke of luck). Treating my own wounds, living off nature, trying to find water. Kinda cool.
Hooray, managed to get there. The last leg through the valley was a horror-movie-esque frantic run while dodging both a scorpion and two spiders, and I managed to hit the water with only a sliver of health left. Thanks for the healing, Infinity.

I figured I might as well share the map though.
Yeah, prospecting IN a cave only tells you about the state of the block of stone/ore you use it on. Like the QL of the ore, or if its in danger of collapsing. You have to be above ground to search for ores in a wide area. Also! any ore deposits are completely 2d, so those lead and Iron spots we've found, are lead and iron completely up to the surface, long columns of it.

Ah, I see. That makes more sense now. Oh well
