To some people on this board, Tribes 1 is the best PC netplay shooter ever created. For me, it was my very first online game, nearly ten years ago. Plasma Rifles, Disc Launchers, Laser Rifles set to "Turret Killer" -- nothing like watch your enemy soar from their base, only to meet the business end of your rifle and fall into small flaming chunks.
Online support from Tribes is ending on August 16th, 2007. I think we should show it off the only way we know how -- play the everloving fuck out of it!
Fileshack has the download, for free (requiring a simple registration). If enough people get on-board, we'll start posting user-names, mods, and servers to join up and destroy each other.
God, so many good times here. I have to admit that I played Tribes 2 more than the first, but if this is actually free, then fuck yes, I'm totally on board.
Why do they have to shut the game down? Does it have to have a central server in order to get a server list? It is just hard for me to imagine an iconic game like tribes being completely gone.
I still play this occasionally. IMHO, it is the best game ever made. Ever.
Man... hitting people who were skiing approximately one million MPH in the head with a laser rifle... good times.
Hiding in the enemy base and playing a cat and mouse game where you constantly harass them and destroy their generator while cut off from friendly reinforcements...
Doing suicide runs in to the enemy base, and occasionally your gun would keep firing after you died, causing mass destruction...
The desperate, frantic fight to get the enemy flag back to your base, no matter how many friendly soldiers had to die to make it happen...
People spamming "HI" and "SHAZBOT" and stuff...
The disclauncher...
There's like, no way to improve on this game. Tribes 2 tried and I think it failed, Vengeance didn't even try, and this one's free anyways so who cares about the rest. I sure hope someone replaces the master server once Sierra nixes it.
I thought the Master Servers were already down. Every time I tried to play it I couldn't get a server list.
It's too bad, I won't play, because doing so would completely depress the hell out of me.
Here's hoping GarageGames comes out with Tribes 4.
In terms of what was better than what, I hold Tribes 2 in much higher regard because the modding/mapping community had much greater support.
Team Rabbit 2 was a blast, and everything about Classic Mod was perfection.
Tribes 1 was nice, but once Classic came out for T2, that sealed the deal for me.
Tribes:Vengeance, I think could have been successful had Vivendi not prematurely pulled the plug. They never even had an opportunity to make balance adjustments and fix the memory leaks. I enjoyed it while it was around, with the exception of the grappling hook.

Vengeance was a disgrace. The vehicles were awkward(yea let's fly around a little sphere). Most of the weapons were pretty garbage and a lot of the maps we're kinda small. The mines were the size of a football, you could see it from half the map away. I'm a tribes 2 guy and I loved the huge maps. The only thing they really added that was awesome was the grappling hook.
I can run T2, but pretty much every server is either Base (wtf?), or takes a ton of map packs that have to be downloaded externally. No thanks!
I disagree on the vehicles. Some people though the vehicles in T2 were awkward at first until they got used to them.
I hated the grappling hook, I liked the idea of a grappling hook, but since it was never patched they never dealt with the mountain of momentum glitches people would exploit to cap out maps.
It was cooler on the smaller maps, like the cavern or the sports arena.
If Steam picked up Tribes and Tribes 2 and optimized them for digital delivery. That way you wouldn't need to download all kinds of map packs and shit.
They have been picking up a lot of older games recently for one last hurrah. That would be a nice surprise.

That and Alien vs Predator 2 would pretty much make me the happiest person in the entire world

The cavern and the arena were the only two good maps.
I'm not complaining about the way the vehicles controlled, because they were pretty much the same as T2, I'm just saying some of the of them were god awful ugly or almost useless.
Tribes 1 occupied 3 years of my life, and became an obsession starting in the closing days of the 90's. I still have it installed and love the game to death. It saddens me greatly that they are pulling the plug on a game that still has a fairly large community.
Someone created their own master server awhile back, so it's definitely possible. Don't worry, Starsiege:Tribes will continue, even if it is with a smaller community.
Tribes 2 was my favorite one as well. And there's basically no hope for that one. Unless someone is able to obtain the information for the authentication server, and find a way to copy that, we're pretty much screwed there. The system behind Allegiance should work pretty well, require someone to register on a site for a login. I just think it's hopeless. The CD-Key requirement is going to kill T2 off eventually.

Dear god no!
My marriage would end.
Tribes took up a good few years of my life. I played that game every day for two years during high school, and for another solid year in first year University (every night; drunk, high or just fucking tired) until T2 came out. Then I did the same with that game.
Hell, I would turn down sex from my girlfriend in high school to play Tribes, and if I didn't, I'd be thinking about the game while doing the deed.
So...as much as I'd love to, I can't play this game again.
I loved this game... but I think I always played it wrong.
I rarely ever got kills. Always died. People always seemed to just rush our base and kill everything + our generators. It just seemed too frantic to do anything.
Should I have paid attention to the maps more? What? I dunno. :-(

There was sort of an optimal number of people per team for each map, it seemed like, and if the map was overpopulated or the teams were a little lopsided, one side seemed to end up getting its base raped constantly. One of the only remaining populated servers, ShitHole or whatever it's called, remedies this by respawning everybody with decent weapons and an energy pack so there's no incentive to raid bases. It makes the crazy three-dozen-player Dangerous Crossing games playable, but still sorta strips away the strategic, cooperative teamplay soul of the game. Base defense was actually kinda important back in the day. :P
I played tribes for about 8-9 years until I went off to college and stopped...
I was pretty damn fine at that game, although I played a lot more mods than I did base. Still, I could MA\MD with the best of them.
EDIT: By the way, I have tons of different Configs/Hudbots to make things look different, as well as a bunch of custom scripts and voicepacks.
Also, This thread at annihilation.info has the Tribes Termination covered pretty well, and what the still active members of the game are trying to do about it.

and the game was awesome.
Edit :Didn't see this in the OP.
God I hope so.
I'll be all over this. Can we get somebody to host a temp server, or do we use what's already around?

I seriously have like 4 copies of the fucking game, but my computer won't run it for some godforsaken reason. Makes me want to hurt someone.

Extract. Tribes > Install > Setup.exe. After running that, patch the game from the other folder, and enjoy.
I'd be more specific, but that's it, really. :P
Are we going to have some sort of official everybody-play-on-the-same-server-at-the-same-time type thing? If so, when?
edit: Also, File Planet has no wait time to download the file right now. http://www.fileplanet.com/140246/download/Starsiege:-Tribes-Full-Game

Also mid-air mine-discs were the best by far.

Oh, and real men play Base.
And why find the cd when we have perfectly good installs online?
