Computer Freezing, HD Stops Spinning

I've gone through the webs searching for solutions but I can't get anywhere. Last Sunday I left my computer on overnight and when I woke the next morning Spysweeper said there was a kernelsomething or other trying to attach itself to my startup. But I couldn't even tell it say or no to keep it because my computer was frozen.

So I reboot and all is well, I proceed to start my daily surf and MMO grind and left it alone for a couple hours while I did somethings around the house, only to find that it again froze about 10 mins after I left it alone. After another hard reset it freezes while loading windows.

So after various reboots, virus scans, system recoveries, a defrag (that had no problems) and a reformat, I read several tests to try, Memtest 86+ ran for 14 hours and some 42 or so passes there were no problems with my RAM. I checked the CPU temperature from BIOS and it stayed at ~41C and didn't spike at all. So I attempt a HD error check from right clicking on C:, reboot and it freezes on stage 4 at about 10%. I then grab an external fan and blow into the case, and it completes the test with no errors. So I think it's a temp problem but the moment I get into windows, continue to have the external blowing on it, try to start DLing and patching my comp back to specs, it freezes again. But it doesn't freeze or randomly reboot at all in safe mode.

TL ; DR: Computer Freezing, CPU Temp stays roughly ~40-43C, RAM tested A-Ok, Virus scans aren't picking up anything, completed a defrag with no freezing, froze during HD error check but didn't freeze on second attempt with more fans, doesn't freeze in safe mode, ran for about an hour with no issues until I started to update/DLing/Patch my comp to where it was before the reformat.

I don't know what else to do besides a new PSU, or try and test my HD somewhere.

Download the hdd utilities form the manufacturer of your hdd. Boot off a cd / floppy and run them. They will be better at determining if there is a real hdd error than windows will.

Ya, hopefully its just a bad sector or something - you could try running a repair install of Windows, generally if the sectors are marked as bad it wont write stuff there. The kernalsomething you mentioned could be nothing, but it could also be really really bad - the kernal being the central programming bit to the OS. (*whilst hackg the Gibson* 'They're going for the Kernal!") If somethings done been poking in yer pooters hamsterwheel, it could al be goin pete tong.

I ran PC Doctor DOS Diagnostic (that's all I could find for HP Media Center crap) and all the tests passed. I was able to update and run some things, so I left it on during the evening, I woke up to a BSOD with a IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error. Everything is going ok for now, let's see what happens through out the day.

I got that same error and I think it's one of two things. A.) A driver error, or B.) Bad RAM. I took a ram stick out and haven't crashed since.

That's what I'm thinking too, although it's kinda ticking me off that MemTest didn't notice any issues with my RAM. I'll have to pull a stick out and see what happens.

I've been having the same error recently trying to play EVE, lockup after about 5 minutes. Swapping RAM in and out doesnt seem to do anything, updated drivers, patched the game, no effect.

Although sticking a fan right there blowing on the computer guts slows it down (More time until the error occurs). But it's running between 35-45C anyway.

Defragging drive right now but I don't think any fundamental programs are fragmented.

After I got the BSOD I was able to run smoothly the rest of the day yesterday. I didn't bother checking the temp or anything, but I still have a lack of confedence in the damn thing. If it goes well for a couple days then I'll be sighing some relief.

Octoparrot: Another thing I considered was maybe my video card's fan died, and even with an external fan it wouldn't be enough to keep it cool before it overheats the mobo. If my computer locks up again, that's going to be the first thing I'm going to check. Maybe yours is the same.
