Some more info is here:This is Michael Shorrock. I’m the Director of 3rd Party Relations at SCEA. As you may have seen this morning/last night on GameHead with Geoff Keighley, we are announcing that a new franchise from Rockstar Games will be exclusive to PS3. As part of our long standing relationship with Rockstar, and the incredible success for both companies with the cultural icon that is Grand Theft Auto, we’ve agreed to the PlayStation exclusive rights of the next great franchise from the Rockstar studios.
Everyone knows to have success in this business you need to look ahead, identifying the talent and titles that are going to give consumers new kinds of gaming experiences that help set the bar for the rest of the industry. Rockstar has a heritage for doing just that. We have had incredible success with the GTA franchise and are happy to continue to offer those titles on our platforms, and even more excited about what’s to come from the current and future relationship between our companies. Rockstar really wanted to make a game that you can truly only do on PS3, harnessing the power of CELL and Blu-ray disc and this deal lets them do just that.. This is really a win-win situation for both companies. As Jack mentioned in the interview with Geoff, this franchise is not LA Noire, but something all new. We agreed with Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive Software that we wouldn’t disclose anything more about the deal or title at this time, so stay tuned, we’ll share more info as soon as we can.

Haha, suuure.
Would you rather have him cry himself to sleep?
'We let them go multi'
Erm no. They decided to go multi and there was nothing you could do.

"We already got Sony's money."
Awesome.
This seems like an odd decision, but I'll reserve judgement until we actually know what the franchise is going to be.
Winner.
Real-time plumbing simulator.
Well it's rumored that Rockstar went to Sony and wanted to keep it at least a timed exclusive for the PS3 but it just didn't happen, who knows if it's true or not.
.... first post, people, first post!
but yeah, i'd be curious to see what the title actually is, before reading anything into this.
Want to give me the confidential documents that give you hte insight on the situation. Them not throwing a bucket load of cash is them letting them go Mutliplatform. Could have secured exclusivity by funneling money at them.
No, but we can give you the very public knowledge that Rockstar or Take Two is in no way owned by Sony, this is not a Sony franchise, and just because you didn't secure something for yourself doesn't mean you were a generous master and "let" someone else have it.
Manhunt
Bully
Red Dead Revolver
Max Payne 1 and 2
i dunno about big sellers but they sold decent.
Don't be pissy because it isn't on the 360. Warriors and Manhunt were both great games. Bully (Canis Canem Edit), Midnight Club 3, Red Dead Revolver.
Does if you think securing this other franchise was worth it.
We're not saying Rockstar hasn't made good games other than GTA (plus Bully is coming to 360 anyway), it's just that none of them have sold fantastically well. Hell, I REALLY love The Warriors, but I'm not going to kid myself that it was a mega-seller.
And apparently Sony didn't think securing GTA was worth it. And that was their slip-up, because Microsoft realized it was, and now DLC content is exclusive for them.
And Sony still didn't "let" Rockstar do anything. If they don't own them, if they can't control them, they can't "allow" or "restrict" them from doing anything.
developed by Remedy, actually
Except that MS secured DLC and not the core game itself.
Remedy only developed the Windows version. Rockstar studios made the console versions.
rockstar did it for consoles
Anyways, I just realized what it's going to be: a Coke tie-in.
you mean ported or published? Maybe so, don't know that, but the Max Payne games themselves were made by Remedy.
The games suck on consoles.
The GBA version of MP is rather fun.
Both Rockstar and Sony have mentioned at least once that they were talking about having GTA IV becoming a timed exclusive for PS3. I don't care how much money they were asking for, Sony probably would have been better off doing it.
Egads man, learn to read.
What do you think publishers work off? They're given a concept, maybe some renders and test footage like that Ghostbusters game. Sony obviously were given this by the proven Rockstar and decided it was a worth while investment.
This new franchise game could be literally the best game ever made and GTA4 will still outsell it 10-1.
They chose ICO, Shadow of the Coloussus and God of War also.
And all of them sold like hotcakes right?
All of those were developed by Sony. Sony did not know exactly how well those games would sell. I can tell you how well GTAIV will sell. If Sony could have produced a hugely popular game instead of Ico, they would have chosen the hugely popular game.
There is also a reason we haven't seen an actual sequel to Ico.
