Something that inspires you to play a game?

Black IceBlack Ice Charlotte, NCRegistered User regular

Is there anything that has ever motivated you to play a game? I watched Die Hard, the other day, for example, and wanted to go play Rainbow Six: Vegas. When I was watching Hero, I wanted to play Ninja Gaiden. What are some of your stories, if any?

(The same principle can go to other things of course - I've seen a Navy SEAL training video and been inspired to go work out immediately afterwards. Then there's news articles that can hit your soft heart and make you want to go to a soup kitchen I guess. But right now.. let's talk about video games. 8-)

Perhaps I'm exceptionally weird, but when I get some new information in a history class or something like that I usually try to integrate it into a game or to change something in order to make it more like history. this is most prominent in Paradox games like Hearts of Iron 2 or Europa Universalis...

Of course, it also works backwards for me, since one of my main college paper topics came about from discovering territorial claims present in a Paradoxgame...

Similarily, whenever I see a movie like Gladiator or Braveheart or Kingdom of Heaven I just want to break out Medieval/Rome Total War and play tactical battles. Especially Medieval...where the European tech group says stuff in Latin and it's all immersive (if you can get passed the sprite) when you bring the camera in close and watch your catapults hurl boulders and the walls of the heathens you're about to crush :p .

When I see a Star Wars film I tend to want to play one of the KotORs...but not always.

After watching Predator I tend to want to play stealth-filled games, which are better if they have some sort of stealth generator or thermal vision. Heck, sometimes you've just got to stalk around in Splinter Cell only using thermal vision (except to navigate heat-less places). AvP and AvP2 work as well, I guess.

Sort of the same thing with Aliens, but that leads to a desire to play something like Natural Selection or something like that.

...really the history ones are the most prevalent.

When I saw 28 Weeks Later, I wanted to go play Universal Combat.

I just had the desire to be reminded that, no matter how much 28 Weeks Later sucked, how big and gaping the plot holes were, how utterly contrived every conflict was, there was still something out there that sucked more.

Not quite an inspiration, but every Easter I get the urge to play Gauntlet for the NES. It's become almost a tradition for me.

Sometimes reading about war makes me want to play Civilization.

Also, when autumn comes around, I want to play platformers. Probably because alot of the big ones have been released around fall.....Mario 64, Banjo Tooie, Donkey Kong Country. And hey, look, Mario Galaxy comes out in November.

Any time I hear the soundtrack of a game, I want to play it... particularly for FFT, Vagrant Story, FF6, Soul Calibur..

Reading the "A Song of Ice and Fire" books always gets me in the mood to play some Medieval 2: Total War almost immediately after I put the book down. While I'm reading it, I even play the peaceful and serene world map music of the game on my computer while I'm reading the book, and when it's a mass battle scene (as happens often in this series) I turn up the battle music on my computer. Really gets you in the mood.

Whenever I'm in any History class, I have a burning desire to play Civilization 4. Reading the Civilopedia on these games has helped me ace dozens of History tests, and because of the game I have a richer appreciation of ancient history.

Games tend to get me in the mood for similarly-themed entertainment in other mediums, rather than vice-versa. But only when a game stayed really engrossing the whole way through. If I feel like the last stretch was an ordeal, forget about it.

Lately, I've grown tired of cynicism and dark, foreboding atmosphere, and been seeking out games that make me feel like I'm fighting for a great and noble cause. I was really disappointed when I tried out Freedom Fighters recently and it just didn't appeal to me, because I was hoping it would be such a game.

Guess I'll just bite down and play through the huge backlog of dreary, mean-spirited PS2 titles I've accumulated while I wait for Ace Combat 6, which looks positively triumphant.
