I was just wondering, since I've never done anything like this before, what would be the best place to go to check the prices for renting in my area, so I could see what I could get for $500/$1000/$1500 etc a month in rent.

Well the first two things that come to mind are craigslist and those racks of magazines you see at the food store that list all the apartments for rent in the area.

Do you have a craigslist in your area? If not, the local paper that carries rent listings would be the best place to start.

Pick up one of the apartment books at the grocery store. Those have the most expensive apts. in your area. Also try www.apartmentfinder.com www.rent.com Yahoo also has a section on apts. The only down side to looking online is the ones online with pictures or tours are almost always the expensive apts in your area. Inorder to see the cheaper apts. you'll just have to start looking at apts., or go talk to a realtor. They usually know who's good to rent from and who's not.
