PS3 Linux - Installation, Features

I was wondering if anyone in this forum had experience using any variant of PS3 Linux, like Yellow Dog or Ubuntu.

1. I can't seem to figure out which ISO I need to download for Yellow Dog. I have Ubuntu downloaded, but the forums for that seem to be filled with people having issues. I'm trying the free mirrors, if you know, please give me a link to one of the free mirrors. I'm using this one to browse:

http://yellowdog.open-mirror.com/ - let me know if there's something better.

2. What happens to my purchases / demos that I've installed upon re-partitioning? Can I assume everything gets nuked, or is the system slicker than that? (I have about 10-20 GB of information I'd prefer not to lose)

3. My primary reason to install Linux on PS3 is to get better media playback over the network. For example, the PS3 downsamples 5.1 surround sound MPEG-2 files to 2-channel when I stream over the network. Is there an application that can preserve the 5.1 sound in Linux?

I think we had a topic about this a week ago and it was decided that there's really no good reason to install linuix on the PS3 at this point in time...

Man, all I want is to be able to play avi and divx. This mpg only bullshit sucks. However, I don't have the time or energy to install linux on my ps3, so...yeah.

Linux on PS3 is no good for media playback due to lockdown of the GPU.

    Or something like that.

PS3 Video 9 is a free application that converts most video types of PS3 compatible video. Also, there are media servers that will convert on the fly although I haven't played around with them.

This is easy. Get a copy of Nero 7, and in the package there is a program called NeroMediaHome. Install, and boom, transcoding to your PS3. If you have a TV card, you can even WATCH LIVE TV on your PS3.

One caveat is that you need a pretty beefy media server. I'd suggest a strong dual processor system or if you have a ton of cash, quad core (overkill, I know).

I have also, less sucessfully, used a program called "TVersity". Again, this setup requires a beefy processor.

I currently use an Athlon 2800+ as my media computer, and it's fast enough for standard definition transcoding / transmission to PS3 of DiVX files, but not fast enough for anything HD. This setup is also not capable of sending along digital TV at a fast enough clip - I get stuttering. My fault, I should have purchased a monster (I built the machine from spare parts)

Also, the Surround Sound limitation is really annoying.

Hence, why I ask about Linux.

Linux on PS3 is no good for media playback due to lockdown of the GPU.

You don't need 3D to do MPEG, and you only need a 500Mhz processor to play back MPEG-2. So, the speed should be there.

Again, the real issue for me is SOUND. I didn't spend all this time ripping DVDs (of home movies/things I own the copyright to) to not get my precious Surround Sound.

This is something the 360 handles with NO issue whatsoever.

Yeah, my video is MPEG-2, and hard drives are cheap. It's not playback I'm concerned with per se. It's the gimping of the Surround Sound for no reason that I can discern. Again, 360 does this. But PS3 has a better upscaler and HDMI, which is basically the best solution in my house for video quality.

If I could get the best of both worlds, I'd be happy.

No you don't need 3d, but you DO need access to the graphics system. Sony does not allow this, and in fact uses one of the cores to actively block you from using it. Like I said in the other post. The PS3 would be able to do it fine, like an X-box, but you are working under the assumption that Sony will let you. It's locked, and if you break it, they will lock it down again. When you see companies telling you they are working on an RSX solution, they are full of shit.

You don't have direct access to the audio chip either. You have to go through the hypervisor on this too. Actually the only access you do have is 5 of the 6 non-running SPE sub-cores, and that's it.

Geez, we just talked about this.

Use your drive for saving games. You can't access the PS3 side of the HD under Linux in the first place, (that's locked out too), so it's not like you can get anything over there anyway.

    See my post here.
