I'd been out of the console scene for a while, and recently picked up a ps2 for Guitar Hero. Survival horror is my favorite genre, but I'm noticing a distinct lack of it at all the retailers I've been to. What gives?
Can someone fill me in on the best of the best of the survival horror genre? It looks like I'll be hitting up ebay for most of it...

These are of varying degrees in quality. I would suggest you get SH2 & 3 and the Fatal Frames. Siren is good but challenging.
Probably is I wouldn't really call RE4 survival horror, more survival action. While it's an awesome action game, it's just not really scary.

RE4 is scarcely a horror game.
I dunno, the Regenerators, the Chainsaw guys, the village people calling at you, and (who can forget) the sewer scene. I hate the Novistadors.
I really, really thought Clock Tower 3 was better than others make it out to be. And you're right, Siren is hard as anything. I spent about 30 minutes on the first one
I don't think I've screamed "GODFUCKINGDAMMIT" that many times before.
Those are all intense moments, but the difference between RE4 and 'classic' survival horror gameplay is pretty clear.
The OP should play RE4 because it's a fucking masterpiece and everyone should. However, I don't think it would give him his Survival Horror fix.

Oh and add Dead Rising to that list. That's pretty survival horror-ish.
Its survival but I wouldn't call it horror. I never felt scared playing it, more pissed at those cheap ass convicts.
I was a little scared at the very beginning, just seeing all those zombies.
But now at lvl 50, I bust in there and think of them as a nuisance.

It is a scary game, no matter how you slice it. Sure, it's not ALL scary, but not all of other Surv/Hor games are (Except Silent Hill).
I cannot tell you how many times I ran screaming like a girly bitch from hordes of Las Plagas infested spainards, even if they curse at me in Spanish (which was funny rather than intimidating).

I absolutely love Dead Rising but I've shelved it for quite a while because of the stupid fucking convicts. I don't know what it is. I'm normally a pretty skilled gamer, but these guys annihilate me nearly everytime. If I kill them, I'm out a ton of ammo, like 2 OJ's, and I'm still barely alive. One of the cheapest, worst moments in gaming in my opinion. And guess what? You killed em? They'll be back tomorrow...
You guys are girls, the convicts were easy. Stand in front of a wall, wait for them to drive at you. Run out of the way. Pull out one pistol, kill the gunner, pull the machine gun off the back and shoot the other two.

The BEST horror game I have played. Its ups there with SH2.
Has anyone else played Cold Fear? It sounded like a great concept. RE4 on a boat! Awesome. It turned out to be a really tedious, boring and stupid survival horror that only ripped off RE4's aiming. Such wasted potential.
I played a bit of Cold Fear, but I don't remember why I stopped playing. I guess it didn't grip me.
It really is more of a survival action, but the only thing I can think of is how more piss-scary Silent Hill will be with an over-the-shoulder camera like RE4.

And I actually bought and beat Cold Fear on the Xbox. It's pretty much a (very) poor man's RE4, but it had it's moments. The combat wasn't flawed, the graphics were nice (for an xbox-gen game) and I don't remember ever becoming frustrated with the game (other than the few times I fell off the ship). Pretty short game though, iirc. That's more of a good thing really though, and it probably only costs a few bucks for a used copy these days.
Yeah, I got it for 10$, minus my 10% employee discount. Pretty sweet deal considering the game's quality.

Ive never played that game, but I love scary games that make you run away. Like RE:4, away from the chainsaw guy.
Also, F.E.A.R. The scariest fucking game I have ever played. Also had lots of ass-kickery, literaly. I'd recomend that heavily.
This man's pretty much covered it, but throw in Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth and the overlooked Clive Barker's Undying.
Running away is the entire basis of Clock Tower 3 and Haunting Ground.
Plus you need to play 1 before you play 3 in order to understand the story completely. SH2 is a stand alone game and can be enjoyed with out knowing anything about the first.

Echo Night (PS), Echo Night Beyond (PS2) - Both are meh but have some scary moments
Resident Evils (PS, GC, etc.)
Silent Hill 1 (PS) - One of the best in the genre and really needs a remake because the graphics are a little dated
Suffering 1 & 2
Call of Cthulhu (Xbox) - Scary, intense and hard
Cold Fear - Good action
The Thing - Good action
Obscure - Meh but should be cheap
Curse - Meh but should be cheap
Eternal Darkness (GC) - Not some much scary as it is great for the heavy Lovecraftian themes
