Acer and Gateway Laptops - Cheep -

I'm in the market for a sub-$700 laptop. Acers and Gateways at best buy fit the bill. I haven't heard anything good about gateways, ever. Acer is popular with eurotrash but haven't made a proper debut here. Does anyone have impressions or experiences to share?
I've had my 1.5 gigs of ram, 2.0 ghz, 256 mb shared memory laptop for a long time and it has been good to me.
My friend recently picked up an acer with 2 ghz dual core, 2 gigs of memory, 512mb nvidia card, and a 120 gig hd for around 600 bucks at circuit city. The deal dried up quickly though, seeing as how it just went on sunday and it's probably sold out.
I love acer...was nervous initially about it but after owning one i'd do it all over again. Hell, I even do basic video editing on this sucker no problem.

I just got an Acer laptop. It was $600, has a gig of ram stock, a 15.4" (i forget if it's horiz. or diag.) widescreen, and a 2.20 GHz processor. Its good and I have no real issues so far.
edit: aw man, looking at the post above me i got screwed on the deal.
edit again: It's only letting me use 766 mb of the ram though, can someone help me?
I, on the other hand, will vouch for the crappiness of Acers. Maybe I just got a dud though. It was an Extensa 2000 and it just plain sucked.
One of my lecturers who's been dealing with laptops since the mid 80's agrees with me that Acers are not the way you want to go.
However, if it comes with a good warranty, go for it!
