Online courses, worth the time and money?

Recently I've been looking at turning my life into a different direction.
Due to home based issues I was unable to finish college and progress with my education as I would've wanted. I'm currently working in a job that I dont have any interest in progressing as a career.
Over the last couple years I've been working toward progressing through selection camps to a professional sports league but that league has recently folded.
I'm almost 22 and I held game art design as a hobby since I was an early teen until about a year and a half ago until I lost almost all my spare time and am interested to (if possible) persue it as a job. I hold good knowledge on the subject and recently had my attention turned to online courses in order to gain more in depth knowledge and gain a qualification.
I'm aware of the cost region being in the thousands+ but was wondering if anybody had any advice as to whether or not they're actually worth it in the long run or any recommendations to consider. My main concern is avoiding making the wrong choice and wasting a lot of time and money.

Note: I'm in the UK so any course suggestions or ideas would need to be available here too.

I would call someone in the industry and just present yourself as a realth friendly, enthusiastic guy looking for some advice. You may get told where to go, but someone might like your gumption.

I'll also point out that I recently got involved with the recruitment of some graphic designers. 5% is the qualification, 5% is their proficiency with the software tools our company used, 90% was the portfolio.

I should conceed that I'm nowhere near the games industry. But with any artistic career, its all about how good you are - you may need a course to teach you how the approprate tools so you can really develop and showcase your stuff - but I wouldnt go thinking that there's a guaranteed job at the end of the course, or that people hiring would select you over someone with a better portfolio, but less formal training.

Well I have IT skills so I can hold a fairly well paid job while im working and looking for jobs after any course. The work I do in IT doesnt hold my interest at all, really, I get paid for playing civ 3 off my usb drive all day. I just want to look into getting into a line of work which I know I enjoy alot more.
