Xbox360 HD DVD Add On Sales Rise ONE THOUSAND Percent on Amazon
We just learned what happens when you discount the price on the Xbox 360 HD DVD player and throw in five free movies. Our conclusion, they sell more than they did before. Looking through Amazon.com's sales rank movers and shakers, the Xbox 360 HD DVD player's sales increased over 1,000% since the $20 price drop. Who needs economics 101 when you've got Amazon.com. And if you're looking to cash in on this super sweet deal, give your local Best Buy a try, some stores are offering it for $149.
Wow, one thousand percent. I guess the desire to get in on Hi Def video's is abit higher than I thought! I expected the sales to rise abit ... but over one thousand percent? From trolling around other sites I've heard that the Add On is selling like hot cakes at Buy.com and many other sites.
Now if only the the 5 disc deal was available in Canada too. I have no doubt this is what's driving these sales.
I use mine as a HD DVD player all the time, haven't had any problems. Besides the 360 runs much cooler when playing movies than it does when playing games. So...you should be terrified of your 360 red ringing if you used it too often as a video game system.
i get the feeling if Accualt's chubby fingers hadn't screwed up the URL, you'd have been well and truly beaten there, Karf. As it is.. i'll call it a tie.
edit: Accualt may or may not have fat hands, and the fault in the linking may or may not be of his doing.
Seriously though that is pretty sweet. 179$ and 5 free movies is a pretty great deal. I have been so pleased with my HD-DVD. 300 and Hot Fuzz arrive today sometime, happy times.
Does that even mean anything? If it sold 1 drive before the price drop / movie bundle, then it means it sold 10 this time. Percentage doesnt mean much without actual sales numbers to reflect it. You can also get it for $149 at Best Buy if I recall. It was on Digg saying which store had it for $50 off with 5 movies.
And no one has one the HD war yet as both formats are destroyed by standard DVDs. There might be a winner in 3 or so years when HDTVs enter the mass market and arent just some niche product that over half the population does not even have.

You're right that it doesn't mean anything without the actual sales numbers. Still it at least provides circumstantial evidence that interest in the HD DVD format is there ... while I doubt the HD DVD Add On was selling like gangbusters before, I also doubt it only sold one as in your hypothetical scenerio above.

A 1000% sales increase is therefore substantial.
Well, the picture has it ranked at #16 in sales in Amazon's video games category, which sounds impressive. I've never bought video games, much less hardware, from Amazon, but someone probably does, right? It's currently at #11, although frankly the list of top sellers makes no sense to me. I get all my information from this board, which apparently warps my viewpoint, 'cause I figured it would be all DS, Wii, DS, DS, Wii controller, DS game, etc.
I bought Mine yesterday at Best Buy for 150, picked up Serenity and 300
with the five free deal, and packaged with King Kong, I figured it was a good buy, it get's me pretty movies, and if Blu-Ray wins, I am sure the eventual players will read my discs, since they already have dual format players.

Wait what? Really? I've never really seen any indication of anyone winning over the other, other than Porn, and they sided with HDDVD right?
My entire point of view is that HDDVD just has a way better name than blu ray.
Of course there is usually a dramatic increase in sales right after a discount. The question is whether it is sustainable in any way.
That's not always true. There are plenty of examples of products being slashed in price, and nobody picking them up.
A 1000 percent sales increase shows that the demand for HD DVD is there, it's all a matter of price point ... the 5 free HD DVD deal makes it almost like you're getting the 360 Add On for 80 bucks.

Unless the product has been a miserable failure and they are cutting the price to clear out all stocks, a product's sales will usually temporarily increase a lot after a price drop.

I was being sarcastic. No one is winning. Blu Ray just keeps sending out press releases about winning. They are actually both selling very little in the grand scheme of things. While I love my HD-DVD player and will probably end up having a Blu Ray player in the next year or so I am of the belief that DVD is going to reign supreme until Digital Downloads take over.

Bad marketing, not enough repeated letters in the name to be catchy, so it's being replaced with HHDDVVDDBVDs

But in the case of HD DVD that's not what's happening. At all.
The only time I've ever heard of one not working was when a guy put the install DVD into the HD DVD drive instead of into the DVD drive.
a guy I know bought one and expected it to work. But he coudln't figure out why he coudln't plug it into his TV via USB.....and he had no 360, and an old s754 Athlon XP system with no hope of playing HD content.

For some people, technology is indistinguishable from magic.
It detects the Toshiba Chipset and installs it right but there are other drivers you need to pull off of Microsofts site (or Windows Update) to get everything working. And then of course you'll need an HDCP compatible video card and monitor combo plus the player software in order to see movies at full res.
Still a good goddamn deal though, if you know what you're getting.

Remind me never to click the Insert Link button and just do it myself from now on.
P.S. I'm a skinny nerd, not a fat nerd.

Of course since it's an MS product, I'm taking it back to Circuit City today for one that actually works... :0
I haven't heard too much about the HD DVD drives breaking down. I wonder what the warrenty is on them.
