I have to second Etrian Odyssey and Ouendan, though you can hold off on Ouendan if you're getting EBA. Meteos might be a good sharing game. People have had some success trading off NSMB life by life, but personally I didn't like NSMB much.
We need more details on your vacation, really. If you're going to be spending most of it on the move, forget EBA and Ouendan for a while (much as it pains me to say it). The games really benefit from the precision of being immobile on a desk somewhere. Trauma Centre is probably even worse off in this regard.
I'd recommend Phoenix Wright 1 & 2, since they're great games that mostly don't require any touchscreen precision. Etrian Odyssey, too, but it's geared towards a specific subset of gamers and I'm not sure if you'd like it.
Lastly, I'm going to recommend Advance Wars DS, if you can find it, because that game is guaranteed to eat up 100+ hours of your life, no problem.
If you like platformers, megaman zx, both castlevanias, nsmb (short but fun), sonic rush.
Though for a vacation, I'd be more interested in other types of games. Wright and Hotel Dusk would be great options. Depends though. If you're relaxing a lot trying to unwind, those are as good as a book.
puzzle quest (the best game on nds this year imho)
meteos
actually meteos might be better to play first - now i have played puzzle quest every otehr puzzle game just seems lacking in something. puzzle quest is great for holidays though, because you can play in eitehr short or long sessions very easily.
Advance wars if you liked the previous advance wars titles, or fire emblem games.
Castlevania, both are awesome, though somewhat short, should still be good for a trip.
EBA and Ouedan are fucking incredible.
Etrian Odyssey is great if you like dungeon crawlers.
Final Fantasy III
Both kirby games are good, but short.
Lunar Knights can be good, if you like the boktai games
Megaman ZX is awesome if you like the megaman x/zero games.
Meteos, and tetris ds both rock as puzzlers. I havent played planet puzzle league to comment on it.
Picross ds is full of awesome and win
Pokemon
Sonic Rush is probably the best sonic game since sonic cd
New Super mario brother is really good
Trauma Center may be worth getting if you like hard games

I know that it's hard to believe but Super Princess Peach is really good as well. I just beat Touch Detective and wanted something lighthearted before sinking my teeth into Hotel Dusk and it was absolutely perfect for that. I still have a few toads to find before finishing it but I've loved every minute of it, I would say I've had more fun with it than NSMB.
I'm actually going out today to buy a black DS Lite and spend $150 on games - for my mom (for the record she's slightly over 50). I'm still not sure what I'm getting her (will depend on sales) but I know she's getting NSMB, Sonic Rush and Nervous Brickdown (she wanted Break em All, but Brickdown looks much better). She was all disappointed when the game she really wanted wasn't out yet - she really wanted Professor Layton!
Phoenix Wright 1 & 2 - Great Games.
Planet Puzzle League - Tetris Attack!... Nuff' said.
New Super Mario Bros - Long and great.
Sonic Rush - Fast paced Sonic.
Elite Beat Agents - So much fun.
Hotel Dusk - Engrossing story.
Lunar knights is no slower than any of the other boktais, which is to say it isn't at all. It's also one of the best adventure games on the DS.
Word of caution on trauma center. It is really fucking hard and frustrating. Like throw your DS at a wall and curse a blue streak frustrating. I tried it because everyone on the forums seems to love it, but I am not enjoying it thus far. Seems too hard without much of a payoff. Opinions opinions lol.
Your recommendation consists of two games that can be played on other systems, and arguably in better fashion?
No, not really.
Sim City on the DS was a nightmare.

You could try Planet Puzzle League. Probably the best puzzle game I've played.
Well, I did my shopping for my mom yesterday, considering she's never played a DS much before I did get a few older games that most of us have already played out...but I ended up with a pretty good set of games, especially for the prices I paid...
DS Lite (Black) $130
Carrying case $10ish
Hori Protectors $Free (I bought so much in one store he threw them in)
NSMB (used) $23
Sonic Rush (used) $12
Phoenix Wright (used) $16
Trace Memory (new) $10
Polarium (new) $5
Clubhouse Games (used) $21
Big Brain Academy (new) $18
Feel the Magic (used) $8
Overall a pretty good set of games, especially for the price. The used games were at a place (NOT EB) that actually requires books and cases and they are in great shape - I'd never know they were used if it weren't for the saved games already on them.
Actually, Ronzo did, and I will again. Picross DS is awesome, especially for 20$. How could you refuse?
I actually just got a DS on Thursday, picked up Picross, Puzzle Quest and Pokemon Diamond (or Pearl, I can't remember which). I figure those will keep me occupied until the sun explodes.
Just me, possibly, but I find this game amazingly tedious and bland. It could be just that I was never the hugest fan of Bejeweled in the first place, but after having to do one of these battles every single time I ever wanted to do anything, I got real sick of it. Random encounters plaguing practically every roadway for the lose, and my level 32 mount still can't "bypass" them like the manual says high-level mounts should be able to.
Just a counterpoint to provide another perspective. Apparently I'm in the minority.

Pfft, I don't play quest. I just play Instant Action. Cuts out the junk.

Yeah, get SPP. It's easy, but I had a ton of fun with it. More fun than I had with NSMB.
Good thing Herby mentioned it or I'd have forgotten.

It's sad that alot of people are close minded to it. I beat it this morning and traded it in because no one else wanted to play it (the wife said it reminded her of SMB2 which she hated!). I did manage to get Pokemon Diamond with my tradeins so I'm a happy camper - I played Yellow back in the day and about 10 minutes of Leaf Green so it's going to be a great new experience for me I think.
I think every self-respecting DS owner should have Advance Wars.
It's one of those games that makes you say, out loud, and in public spaces, "Damn. this is a good game!"
I think every self-respecting DS owner should have Advance Wars.
It's one of those games that makes you say, out loud, and in public spaces, "Damn. this is a good game!"
And it really is. Damn.
Haven't been able to find a single cartridge of it in two different Gamestops for months, new or used. Kind of annoying since I hear it's great.
I was playing Rise of Legends the other day on LAN and I remember thinking to myself, "God this artillery sucks..I should have picked Grit as my CO." :x
So uh yeah, it is a damn good game. I've only played the first two but I can't wait to find a copy of dual strike.
AW: DS is a great game. I was lucky enough to find a copy of it as I bought my DS Lite, and have loved it. I only got to play a few minutes of the first AW for GBA, but I loved it.
Also, I noticed no one has said anything about Animal Crossing...
I know it's a game that looks like a lame kids SIMS game... but really. It's slow, easy going, a great time waster and trust me... I have spent toooo much time fishing, just because all I could think of was, "I NEEEED a bigger house!!!! AND THAT SOFA!"
Not for everyone, but for those who are open to it, it is a nice easy escape.

I realized Puzzle Quest was actually awesome, when I found out you could still level up and do practically anything in the Instant Action. Quest Mode bored the shit out of me.
Actually, Ronzo did, and I will again. Picross DS is awesome, especially for 20$. How could you refuse?

Yes, Picross DS really is all kinds of rad. I have poured an obscene number of hours into that game and have hardly completed a fifth of the total number of puzzles.
Just me, possibly, but I find this game amazingly tedious and bland.
i had a friend say that to me, and i asked him to make sure and check out the monster items and spells so that he realized every creature was different and required different tactics to beat. he turned the difficulty up to 'hard' and hes now on his second time through and hasnt stopped playing since :P
if you REALLY hate bejewelled, its possible you wont like puzzle quest i guess, but the tactics involved in making a character build (especially at levels 1-20 where the game is balanced at its best) are what has kept it interesting for me long after the bejewelled-fascination wore off.
multiplayer is a little broken with some overpowered spells/items/runes, especially if you have friends who like to munchkin-ize their heroes, but im waiting for the rebalanced xbla version for some good multiplayer (thats irrelevant though, since this is a ds thread!)
If you are a fan of the series, Final Fantasy III is a good time. I like the port of Super Mario 64 as well.
Not to run off topic but a super smash brothers game would be a pretty nice addition to the system.
Is it just me or is Etrian Odyssey a huge pain in the ass? I just *barely* beat
Fenrir, the first (wolf) boss, after utilizing a bunch of Medica IIs and even a Nectar, and now I'm dumped down in B6F where the monsters are nasty as hell and I can't even touch the FOEs. Is this really something where I'm just going to have to grind on the Venomgels and Sleepgels for like 6 levels so I can actually tackle harder things?

Pokemon Pearl/Diamond
Both Castlevanias.

Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime! It's so good.
Tetris DS
Mario Kart DS
Um... and what other people said.
I've put hours upon hours on my DS playing those games.
