Circuit City Gamers Savings Club--10% off all games
Basically, you pay Circuit City $20 up front, and for a year you get 10% off of all new games and accessories.
As far as I can tell, this is a great deal for most of us here. As long as you buy 4 or more games a year (or a whole bunch of DS games), you are coming out ahead.
This is better than Gamestop's card program, because you are getting new games for a discount, not used games of questionable quality.
What else do you get? Because if you factor in tax, you aren't really saving that much compared to shopping Amazon.com, or any other place that offers free shipping and no sales tax. And on top of that, you would have to spend $200 just to break even.

But $200 worth of gaming stuff for a whole year? That's roughly 4 new games at $50 each. That doesn't seem too unreasonable. Probably not for me though, I buy a game once in a blue moon.

After you've bought enough games to pay for the cost of the card, at say, a 7% sales tax, the amount you're saving with the 10% off discount while paying sales tax is more than the amount you save by paying the full price with no sales tax.
Of course, to really break even when you include sales tax, you'd need to buy about 13 games over the course of a year. Of course, this is at 7% sales tax, which will be higher or lower depending where you live. For me I guess it probably wouldn't be that great of a deal, because I only buy about 10 games a year max, but for some people I'm sure this would pay for itself pretty quickly.
This is assuming I calculated correctly. Quick, someone check my maths!

Well, according to my maths, due to tax, you only get 3.7% real savings on each purchase. (1.07*.9) So in order to cover the purchase price of the card you would have to spend 20/.037, or $540.54 at CC. If games retail for $50 you would have to buy 11 games to break even on the card (games cost $53.50 with tax).
I never, ever buy games at $50. I usually spend about $30 per game. So for me, I would have to buy around 20 games just to break even.
If I spread all those game acquisitions over one year, and I gamefly'd them two at a time instead of buying, I would save about $264.54. If brightspot kept giving me $10 off each month I would save $384.54 on a year of gaming.
I would consider using this card if it were bundled with a purchase, like with a $50 game or a console. Thinking many people are going to pony up for this and then be almost locked into Circuit City's game selection and pricing is wishful thinking.
This isn't the best of programs but if you really want to shop at Circuit City they are currently offering a free memebrship with the purchase of any console or handheld.
I live in Oregon, hence no sales tax, hence...I might really have to check this out!
With no sales tax, you make back the money you spent on the membership very quickly. If you buy four games at $50 a pop or more, it pays for itself. After that, you start saving $3-$6 on every game you buy. Not bad at all. For people with no sales tax, this is a great deal. For people who live in states with very high sales tax (like me - Texas has no income tax, so our combined sales tax can reach as high as 8% or 9% in some places), you'd have to buy a LOT of games in a year to break even on the deal.
Well, it depends on whether you are going to buy the game in state anyhow. If you weren't going to order from Amazon, you are still saving money over what you would be paying.

Good point. I almost never buy games online, so I probably would pay sales tax either way.
this would pay off for me quickly, even with 6% tax. I mean shit so far this year (and this is my most conservative year so far in the past 6 years) I've bought:
so, with the list of games I will be getting this year *after* this point in time, this type of a deal would indeed help me out. especially with this holiday season

Now, that I'll take them up on. I still want a DS at some point, and I'm getting a 360 when the price drops.
I still prefer buying used, because I like the easy return if a game sucks or is kind of "meh."
I got one of those EB/Gamestop cards in January or December because I was buying used cube games left and right, and I enjoy game informer. I probably won't renew it though, as I have every cube game I really want except one (Super Mario Sunshine, which I won't pony up $20 for, and isn't much cheaper used).

If it could be combined with other offers I'd get it.
But with pricematching policies I can already get it for someone else's low price + 10% of the difference. Now if CC were to combine the Gamer Club with the PM, for another 10% off...

Man, I live in the wrong state.
We're nearing 9% sales tax PLUS a high income tax rate. Goddamn crooked politicians.

Wow, seriously? What state do you live in, that's messed up!
The only thing that has kept me from checking this out yet is that the closest circuit city is like...18 miles away. It's doable, but not quite convenient.

Somewhat tempting, but I don't want to get locked into:
1) Buying new games. I could more cheaply buy used or use a rental service.
and
2) Going to Circuit City every time. They aren't always that reliable with getting new shit in and have a smallish selection compared to others. For instance, can I pre-order Bioshock CE there? Not that I know of; I have to go to GameStop. Can I get Rock Band there? Maybe they will get like 2 and sell out; or maybe it will be cheaper to order off of Amazon. Or maybe Best Buy will have a sale. Etc.

Ah well, back to contemplating mugging the Best Buy truck driver...
Just run down to the mall for my shopping.

Is that CA for Canada? Because items sold by Amazon (though not all the ones sold on/through Amazon) don't charge sales tax to ship to California.
