The Premiership season is just about to start, and I just saw a fantasy football game on The Times website (http://www.playthegame.timesonline.co.uk/). Are any of my fellow football fans interested in a Penny Arcade league? If so, I will set one up and we can see who knows their shit. I'll likely set up the league this evening, so if you are interested please post here.
One more thing... don't underestimate the Arsenal this season. Eboue on the right wing... sweet!

The league is set for 20 teams, and the allocation date is set for August 10th. If we don't get 20 teams by the 10th, the allocation is pushed back... so get in there!
Hey, I want in! Not that I know the first thing about the EPL (except which Americans play for which clubs), but I'll give it a try anyway.
EDIT: The allocation ranking? Difficult.
Yeah, difficult is right... that's why I'm glad we have a week to think about it.

370ish players to rank. It's kind of funny - I sorted my top 50 and realized I was being biased out the ass. So I went back and redid it trying hard to be objective. Even though I'm an Arsenal fan through and through, Drogba topped my list both times. I hate you Didier, but dammit you're good.

I have a ton of Arsenal players at my top as well... though it didn't stop me from putting Berbatov and Martins up there as well. Those two are going to tear it up this season. I'm having my biggest trouble picking my defenders, I just don't know Premiership defenders that well, other then Arsenal's crew.
Does anyone know if some site out there will be doing a fantasy soccer league for the Champions League?? I am not too up to date on the Premier League, but I do follow the Champions League fairly closely.

Depends what position, but here are a few really solid EPL defenders:
John Terry; chelsea - without him, Chelsea struggle and will often resort to bringing Essien back to help plug holes.
Patrice Evra; ManU - he's turning out to be quite the signing for Sir Alex. He played at Monaco and was an integral part of the team, often times running up the left flank and setting up goals. He was really slow for the EPL at the beginning, but he's adapted very quickly, and very well. Expect him to do extremely well this season.
William Gallas; Arsenal - if he stays healthy, he's a force to be reckoned with. His experience in big games and his ability to put in performance after performance put him in the top tier of defenders.
Ashley Cole; chelsea - has a lot of assists, and does well to backtrack and defend the LB position when he's gone far ahead and exposed the flank. Tends to flop around like a wet noodle and very susceptible to throwing shit fits. He's good, but I have him dead last because I loathe the asshole.
Rio Ferdinand; ManU - the leader of the ManU defence. When stuck with players like Wes Brown, he often has to pull double duty. If Van Der Sar has a bad game, this guy is pretty clutch at shutting down angles and providing some much needed relief. Not very good with set pieces.
Kolo Toure; Arsenal - probably the strongest defender for Arsenal in terms of raw physical strength. He will often shoulder players off the ball and is very smart with his positioning. Between him and Billy Gallas, you have a very potent defence for the gunners.
Notables: Sol Campbell, Makelele, Chimbonda, Carragher, Agger, Neville and Eboue.

The other thing is that the players are already ranked according to last year or something along those lines. You don't need to know anything to play as you could just sign up and see what happens.

I actually rank Carvahllo(sp?) above Terry, as when Terry was injured he filled the role better and looked a better defender. Terry is an excellent captain and defender, but I think Carvahllo(sp?) is slightly better... and with Terry injured now, he is going to get some games.
As for Cole... fuck the bastard! It was not only satisfying seeing Chelsea not win the title last year, but it was also a dream to see Cole miss out on it. Also, Bridge is a better left back... though I may take a risk with picking Gareth Bale.
How can you not love Toure... he is just Arsenal through and through. Fantastic defender for his age, and also has a wicked hard shot when he bombs forward. Easily my favourite player on the team, and he should become captain once Silva retires/leaves.

Bridge is pretty good. I think the general view is he can't play D. I'm a die hard Chelsea fan and I miss the days of a healthy Terry and Gallas in the middle. Those guys were a brick wall. That said, having Terry, Carvahlo and Gallas in the side I'd probably stuff Gallas at FB as well. One thing to remember about picking: Lampard may annoy the hell out of you but he will play a billion games and amass a billion points.

True, but I think Gerrard is a better midfield choice. Though Lampard has never really impressed me when I have seen him play, I know he is a quality player. Gerrard on the other hand, always impresses me... he's easily England's best player.
Gerrard has a certain indescribable quality that, if I were a real life coach, would pay dearly for. The fantasy game, however, is all about statistics and Lampard is going to pile them up.

That's true I suppose... who else are you rating in the midfield? I've picked Fabregas and Hleb from Arsenal, Hargreaves from Man U, and am still trying to decide on others.
I was going to add that Fabregas is going to have a great year but I didn't want to give away my picks. I jumped Hleb 50 spots and he may be worth more. Hargreaves I'm agonizing over. Tevez as well. I don't understand the game well enough to really know who is going to be worth points but I suspect half the battle is picking guys who won't spend half the season on the trainer's table. Hence Lampard (just jinxed him). Owen could be insane or he could score two goals in the 75 minute he plays all season. I think the best bet is to pick a certain number of indestructible types and then round it out with risky outliers who could be worth more than average (like owen). When the allocation goes off (if we ever get TEN FUCKING PLAYERS) the trick will be nicking low rated high performers. I mean everyone is going to be rolling for Lampard and Gerrard and Drogba.

Well up front I have Martins and McCarthy ranked rather high, as if they have seasons like last year, they will be worth mucho points. I'm actually having trouble with the right side... there are a total lack of good RBs and RMs.
I know, there has been a pretty decent amount of football interest here in the past... so I'm surprised that we still haven't hit the limit. Come on guys, even if you don't know a thing about football this will be interesting. It's also a damn good way to get more interested in the best damn sport in the world!
I just moved Eboue up my list... he's listed as a RB, but he will play RM this season. Quite simply, nobody crosses the ball into the box better then he does... so RM could be a good position for him.
Eboue could pay off nice. Martins not going to happen. McCarthy good at the price. Alex for Chelsea could be a good bet depending on the health of Terry and Carvalho. Cech is way too low but I don't know how important keepers are. This game is half about who is going to be healthy. Some guys go down out of pure chance--Cech last year?? and some are just bound to be out half the season--Owen?? Also, transfers... Ballack could go on a tear or he could just go. Also, they have Schevchenko rated pretty high for his liklihood to be around for a seaso. Ronaldo seems a good pick as he looks to be somewhat resiliant (although don't expect a season like last year). Dammit now I need to go through my picks again. I'm thinking too much.
Edit: forgot to mention Robben. He'll play on the right for Chelsea--maybe. If he's healthy he could do well. Or he could be doing well for RM. Another thing to ponder is selection. Liverpool last year rested a lot of players for the CL. No points.

Correction... we didn't get our tenth man, but apparently our league has started. So our allocation should be tomorrow! Make sure you have your lists set up!
