I've heard this from many people. I'm not sure HOW true it is, but the one thing to consider is that DVDs are constantly being spun, unlike games which are in bursts. So there would be more wear and tear in all likelihood. I'm not convinced it is really *that much* more though...
Sounds like they don't know what they're talking about. If playing regular DvD on PS2s would be harmful, we'd certainly know about it by now.
I don't use my PS2 to play movies that much but it still works just fine.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
I've had my PS2 for 6-7 years playing games and DVDs...no problems whatsoever. I've never heard that it would harm it before. Why would they make the PS2 able to play DVDs if it was harmful to the console?
It's absolutely true for first-gen PS2s. Heavy disc use of any kind would generate DREs in weeks or months, not years. Sony has now STOPPED repairing these for free (originally done to avoid a class-action lawsuit). DO NOT use it as your general purpose DVD player if you have a SCPH-30000 series PS2.
I would like to echo what other people have said - it's wear an tear on the drive, and since budget DVD players can be had for next to nothing now, it's unnecasary wear and tear.

I would not worry about it.
Well that explains it
