The Cost of PAX

edited August 2007 in PAX Archive
In short: Why does PAX cost what it does?

I'm not exactly complaining the prices are too high, because of course, I have no idea what the operating costs are. But I was somewhat involved with the Bookfest back in the day, and people bitched and moaned when they started charging $10 for admission. This is...more.

Is PAX a for-profit event? How much of the admission fees cover operating costs?

Pax's price is pretty average for most cons I've ever been to, the operating costs on something this size are HUGE.

It's a perfectly valid question - pricing models vary from show to show and why organizers peg X dollars for their event really depends on what they're trying to achieve. Us? We strive to break even each and every year. I won't lie to you, the cost to run the show is terrifying. I've done it for four years straight, and even now every time I see the expense lines, my skin crawls. To give you an idea, the rent alone for the center is well into the six figures.... but the real killer is electricity! :(

But it's a fine balance, no doubt. We try to do a pricing model that's both fair in terms of value to the attendee as well as not too out of whack from what people expect from a show. The $10 admission you refer to - who knows, maybe that's the value of the content ... on the other end of the spectrum, and I hate to mention our "competitor," EforAll pegs themselves at close to a $100 pricepoint, and maybe what they're offering is worth that.

At about $15/day, we try to cram as much entertainment as possible into those 37 hours... with the concerts, the panels, the tournaments and the exhibition floor, we really do think we're being fair without running Penny Arcade into bankruptcy. :)

I imagine the price of admission covers a whole lot of the expenses. I've been involved with the New Years festival here for the past few years and the tickets were much cheaper than PAX. However a lot of the event was possible due to donations from local businesses and community members.

I believe PAX doesn't receive the same kind of financial support from it's community. Last time I check there's no PayPal donation button.

Unless you are local to the Seattle area, the admission price is the least of your expense worries. $15/day for an event of this magnitude is cheap, in my opinion; especially considering the amount of content.

Yeah, and the farther away you're coming from, the more the cost. Hell, just parking this year costs more than the 3-day badge. Then there's the hotel, gas, tolls, food, liquor and swag.

Totally. I know our liquor/travel food budget is going to equal what we're paying for the passes + BYOC.

$45 is quite cheap for the amount of content at PAX, especially this year, now that the schedule is out. Look at something like Blizzcon for a quick comparison - $100 to see Starcraft 2 and talk to other nerds about World of Warcraft. Now that's a money-making scheme if ever there were one.

    PAX is quite fair.

Thanks much for the answer, Robert - I thought it was something like that (as the way Pax is spun has never been as a for-profit event) but my dad kept going "WHY DOES IT COST SO MUCH" and it got me thinking about it too.

Assuming I have fun this year, I'll definitely pre-reg next time:)

You can do PAX pretty cheap I imagine. I had to pay $500 for a plane ticket from Florida, but once I'm there i don't plan on spending a great amount. I am bringing a sleeping bag to avoid buying a hotel. So after the $45 will be food and maybe party just a little bit with.

Sleeping out on the street: bad idea, even with access to a shower/bath.

If you're going to spend a shitload of money on a flight, you might as well get a decent hotel room.

I think that the cost itself for PAX is quite affordable. Travelling there is the killer, but then again all travel and fun has to cost something

6 figures to rent a place for 3 days, plus a half day of setup and a half day of cleanup...ouch! You coulda probably waited 6 years to hold PAX, and then used that rent money to build your own Washington State PAX Center!

I didn't plan on sleeping at PAX or on the street. Really, I don't know what I'm going to do with the sleeping bag. Wow, way to ruin my plan. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find someone with a hotel room floor I can pass out on. Then the sleeping bag may come in handy.

I tried to get reservations at the Green Tortoise Hostel but it's already full. I'm sure as hell not paying for a hotel room. I'd rather stay up for three days straight.

Uh, you should probably find somebody on the forums to split a room with rather than trying to wing it when you get there.

The price is -incredibly- low... I can only imagine it's affordable because of the sheer volume of these things.

So it really just comes down to the background costs, but those are really good for the local economy, so hey.

The cost of admission to PAX is nothing, considering all there is to do there. Hell, I'd pay that much just for the concerts (I'd actually pay more, but don't tell anyone!) Considering I get this awesome convention at the same price, it is nothing less than awesome.

However, the cost of my airfare and hotel isn't all that cheap. So my cost of PAX is significantly higher than locals.

Yup. The 3-day-pass is the cheapest part of my trip: $130 round-trip for a ticket to Seattle, couple hundred for hotel, plus the cost of a couple non-vacation days off work for travel. At least the Canadian dollar is strong.

    $200 train ticket
$80-$100 Food (including 2 days up and back from seattle)
$40-$80 personal gift money (for shirts and trinkets)
    $40-$60 Family/Friend gift money

Forty bucks for the con isnt that bad when you think about it.

p.s. Im couch surfing. Yay no hotel bill for me.
