Picked this up last night, on Spring day 12 right now; just got an iron hammer and having an iron hoe made. So far my only complaint is that removal for non-Poison status effects is entirely too expensive.
Once you get your house expanded and have access to the mixing herb lab thing (name seems to have slipped my mind) you'll be able to make your own potions for Status removing, so you wont have to pay for them, plus you'll be raising your...herb...grinding...making...skill.
So I'm in mid-Fall of the first year now, continuing to wait for winter so I can enter the next cave. I've already crafted just about everything I can at this point. I mean, I originally crafted a Luck Blade for me to use, but eventually got bored and winded up making a Heaven Asunder. I might start making a good 2H Sword and other weapons just to pass some time.

I'm in the same boat, got a friend to trade me platinum and other stuff I can't get to help pass the time and level up crafting. Got all the level 5 tools except the fishing rod.
I've got the game playing itself right now. Five level 9 monsters can water the entire field, and it takes less than a season of brushing to get them up that high. So half my field is monster fodder, the other half are level 10 sweet potatoes. So my daily routine right now is just fishing and hitting on girls/getting up friend points with town folk.
Right now I do have 7 monster huts (and most have another level), but not quite that many monsters. I only have 4 watering the fields, which is way more than I need with just 15 fields of stuff (9 grass, one of each type of crop/flower). I don't really see any reason to plant any more, since I don't need any more money and that grass is already more than enough to keep everything fed.
I haven't done any trading, and I don't plan to start. I was able to tough it through four caves with a level 3 Broadsword, after all. I'm sure I'll manage. The only thing I may have to trade is a requirement to propose to one of the girls.
In order to marry Mei, you need a Lover Snapper that is at least level 80. I'm not sure how high level you can actually catch them at, but I imagine it'll still need a fair bit of trading.
That said, I haven't even yet decided on that girl. There's still six of them that I am really considering.
Yeah, if you level up your crops and things by trading, I think you're going to get less gameplay out than others. My highest-level crop is 4, and leveling them up uses a fair amount of my mornings, in-game. I could have them all level 10 in a few minutes, with trading.

...Who said anything about trading crops? I fertilized mine. That being said the fields are just there for the sake of my harvesters, I have a little over 4 million GP just from leveling up the hammer.
I can never understand what Natsume's problem is. It takes them forever to localize anything, and then it's full of bugs and spelling/grammatical errors. I mean, I'm pleased with their job on Rune Factory, but it still has a fair few noticeable errors.
I guess I can't complain too much as long as they do keep bringing Harvest Moon games over.

Look at it this way; at least you don't live in Europe. Whatever shitty company does the games over there takes their goddamn time. Magical Melody is on the FALL RELEASE CALENDER.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I'd become the localization editor for Natsume. They wouldn't even have to pay me.
Looks excellent. I wonder if it'll take Natsume another year to localize this one.
Do Want.
Is that... is that a panty shot (of sorts) on one of the marriage candidates? Hitching up skirts and wading in rivers is a new feature in RF2? Bought'd.

One of my friends brought up the same point. I suppose it is, sort of. I'm guessing its just the bottom fringe of what she is wearing.

I hope I'm not the only one whose first reaction was to recall that "witch hunter" game from a while back.
I just went on the Moonlit Night date with Rosetta, my main candidate.
What a tease! Are all the girls like this? With, what? Three lines of dialog? No special backdrop or animations? They could have at least done a special, stars-and-moon backdrop, with the characters walking about a little. And more dialog, preferably with some branching options. I was disappointed.

The only thing keeping this game away from absolute greatness are the details.
Monsters are too limited/too easy to raise.
Not enough festivals nor activities during said festivals.
The marriage candidates are really unbalanced. Three of the candidates can be maxxed out IN ONE DAY. (One of those, of course, you need to be in a least second year to do or have a very generous benefactor)
Money is too easy to get.
Monsters are too easy to fight.
I do like how odd most of the candidates for potential wife are.
Seriously, take the festivals from HM 64, toughen up some things, and you'd have pretty much a perfect game.
I hear that. Let's hope this was sort of a trial run. They'd never tried to combine action-adventure elements with HM, before, so I assume they'll really dump a lot of effort into RF2 now they know it works. The screens posted above look extremely promising.
Any idea how well RF sold in Japan and is selling here? Any better than the usual, surprisingly-good HM sales driven by their core fans?
I've never used those things you can use to increase the level of seeds/crops or make them grow faster. I just got seeds that take 100 days to grow, so I figured I might as well level the things up and do whatever I can to them to make sure whatever comes out is at a high level/quality/whatever. Anyone want to give me a crash course on seed level/quality raising?
Also, there are a few other things they need to fix for RF2. We do need more monster variety (why can't I milk the apple for apple juice by the way?), but we also need a way to be able to rearrange the buggers. I also wouldn't mind a slightly larger variety of things that can be forged and pharmacied early on without getting some rarer ingrediants because I'm getting sick of waiting for winter. Also, I want to be able to forge six Scrap Irons into an Iron, I'm out of Iron again. :P I hope they take the slowdown out and fix a few graphical things as well.
Mostly I want the monster rearranging and more variety of things to get from them. It's fantasy, so they should be able to come with a bit more than milk and honey. :P
When I do get the seeds at a high level or growing faster (I still don't know the intricacies of that yet) I will gladly turn the harvest crop into more seeds to share with anyone who hasn't got them. I can't be the only one hoping the complete my shipping list, or at least some of the lists, and thus in need of rare seeds.
Anyway, I just read that Expirity (sp?) is how many real world seconds the effects of some food last after you eat them. Everyone else might know this but I thought it was how many days till the food expired so I thought I'd post it just in case.
Anyone else experimenting with eating Yellow Grass before fighting to try and up the drop rate of monsters?

Step 1) Plant seeds
2) Use the Greenifier on the square you want to be higher level. It'll look and sound like you're throwing the stuff away, but it does still affect the square you have targeted.
3) Raise as normal
4) Use the one level higher crops in the seed maker
5) Repeat until you get level 10 seeds
Not that I think you'll have much chance to repeat with the 100 day ones.
Ah, so it'll only affect one square! What about the stuff that makes it grow faster? The one I saw for sale said it speeds things up by one day. Can I use it more than once? I have money to waste and wouldn't mind speeding things up by a couple dozen days. :P
Just got my pass for Misty Bloom cave but wait you can't enter till it hits winter and I just started fall. Luckily my extension will be done in a few days, I guess I'll spend fall just levelling my skill points

Yeah, I've been in that position since mid-summer, currently mid-fall. Lately I've been going to sleep at, like, 5 PM just because there doesn't seem to be anything left to do.
I'm looking forward to the fish festival just to see how impossible it actually is to marry Mei. Unless she gains, like, 8 LP in that single day, I'm probably going to have to give up on her in favor of Melody, Bianca, Mist, or Lynette.
You can of course use more than one to affect more squares. I used 9 for each patch of one of those 100 day seeds.

I haven't tested that yet. I've generally got enough to harvest as is due to rampant use of the greenifier/seed maker combo with regrowing plants.

Yes. I plan to use 50 fast grower things on my patch, one per day.
Okay, now I'm confused. I know I have to use Greenifier once on each square, and that I can only use the Formula A once a day, but must I use one Formula A on each square too or is once per set of nine crops okay?
Also, does anyone have a Strong Vine or Fairy Powder for trade?

Oh god this game is not good for my packrat tendencies.
I've got like seven level 7-9 sapphires from the second cave but I don't want to sell them because they might be useful later.
I'm going to be honest, and I'll spoil it just in case:
I'm at about 60+ in my forging and everything, and NOTHING I've seen uses Sapphires. Maybe in Decorations, but I've yet to see one in there as well. You can get a ton of them later.

They are pretty good for leveling decorations. No, you don't really need them for too too much, and they are by far the most common drop in the area you are in.
Ok, what? 100 day seeds? Im missing something here O_o
Also, i'm done with Mt. Gigant and waiting for winter to finally arrive so I can go into Misty Bloom Cave, and I spend my time leveling forging/decoration/pharmacy.
Why in the bleeding hells isnt anything giving me gold!
I can mine like 200k worth of gems a day, and get 1 chunk of gold ore out of the deal, wtf?! Is the level four hammer so super good that gold just isnt worth its time or something?

Try charging less. Like up to full glow but no orbits. I always get gold like that.
Oh, hell, Natsume finally released a fixed version of Harvest Moon DS. The serial numbers are ABCEN1J09 or ABCEN1J11.
It's gonna SUCK to track these down. And I just imported the PAL version.
Is there any way to tell if it's the fixed version just from looking at the outside packaging? I can get this for $5 at my local Best Buy, and it's awfully tempting. If not, will Natsume replace borked copies if I ask them nicely?
They might actually. It's probably worth the risk. Just do your research and tell them you got one of the many gamebreaking bugs.
There's no way to tell from the outside and I can GUARANTEE Natsume won't do shit for you.
Ok, what? 100 day seeds? Im missing something here O_o
I found some emery flower seeds in the first cave. A monster dropped them. According to the menu, the period is 90 days. I planted them in spring so they'll be done sometime in winter. I don't know if that's what everyone else is talking about.
I got 90 day seeds in the first cave, and 100 day seeds in the second. My 90 day seed'll be done in winter, but I really don't want to wait 100 days for these other ones to get their act together.
Also, redstormpopcorn, I'd sell anything that isn't Level 1, since I don't think high level holds after you use it for crafting or whatnot. Except for Iron, if you get high level Iron keep it just as you would if it's low level. That stuff gets hard to find!
So... is there any sort of specific thing I have to do in game to enable Leo to make the level 2 items? It's now the first week of summer and I'm still using all the cheap stuff. I'm swimming in materials and gold, but Leo only offers the level 1 stuff.

What gives?
He won't sell them, but he will upgrade your current stuff. However, when you tell him to upgrade an item, he asks if you want him to forge the current item; that's just his way of asking if you want to make the current item better. So if you ask him to forge your hammer, and he asks if you want him to forge a cheap hammer, what he is asking is if you want him to make your cheap hammer into the tier 2 hammer.

That's not clear at all. I could've had that stuff ages ago.
Thanks for the answer. I've been making a lot of mistakes playing through (I completely missed buying the Seed Machine in Spring, so I'm still stuck with Level 1 seeds), but this just had me so frustrated that I had to ask. This is my first HM game, though, and other than that stuff, I'm really enjoying it.

I've switched to this policy. At the moment I'm a handful of gold pieces away from the first house upgrade, with all of my tools at level 2+ in the first week of summer. :O
