Hi everybody.

So I'm freaking out a little bit. Besides a few tiny local cons, this is my first nerd mecca experience. I decided I wanted to go to PAX pretty late in the game and it soon became apparent that I didn't have the funds. So I put it on the back burner and thought about going to the San Diego con, it didn't quite work out since you couldn't preregister and that combined with my general laziness added up to not being able to get tickets. Well thanks to some pulled strings I have passes to PAX and, thanks to some unexpected cash, the funds to make the trip happen.

I'm not gonna go and be a tool on my first post asking for tips on how to prepare or anything, I've read the stickies and they're quite handy. But there are a few things I was curious about. First, my pass is at will call. Does that mean I'm waiting in the same line as people who are buying at the door, or is it a separate area and then I get in line with the masses with passes?

Also, how attainable is getting into the panels I want to see? A lot of them involve Gabe and Tycho, so I assume that's kind of a Kevin Smith panel situation where I need to get in early and set up base camp for a seat? Obviously, it's dependent on the panel, but are we talking like an hour for the average panel? Two? Five?

Oh, and this could probably go in a separate thread, but seeing as the DS seems to be quite handy in lines and general gaming there, I plan on finally picking one up. Do you have any suggestions on titles that are popular on the show floor? Also, is it worth the gamble of waiting til the 21st to try and acquire the red and black number that is bundled with Brain Age 2? That's cutting it pretty close since I leave on the 23rd.

Finally, the 26th is my birthday. My 21st birthday. I expect many offerings of booze.

Looking forward to meeting some like minded individuals and playing some awesome games.

Cheers.

Having your 21er at PAX? You are, in all honesty, going to die. Write a will.

Oh, what a way to go. In a blaze of booze, games, and nerdcore music. I'll be the geeky Chris Farley.

Alright, serious answer time. I am quite familiar with panels, as they're where I spend 80+% of my time at PAX, so I can tell you that for the average panel (in previous years) all you have to do is show up. Most of the panels are small potatoes (including, sadly, the one I'm moderating, the PC hardware panel) which have very small lines if any, and if you just show up when they start you'll almost always get a seat. The PA panels are an exception, they will have big lines and get packed, so show up somewhat early. The only other panel that might get a little heavy is the Pitch Your Game Idea panel which has a history of being awesome (in large part, in my opinion, due to the charismatic and insightful input of Jeff Kalles formerly of Nintendo).

I had my 21st at PAX as well. I didn't end up dying. I feel ripped off.

The only other issues I have are these.

    1) When should I head down there for the first day?

Obviously there is gonna be a line, but when do people normally start showing up?

    2) Does anybody have any clue how the will call works there?

The map seems to imply that there is a ticket booth on the first level. Is there a specific line for will call or do I have to wait in the line with the "at the door" buyers?

    Thanks if you can help.

There will be a separate line for the will-call booth right next to the main day-of sales window. When do people start showing up? The majority on Friday morning, but there are always some people that show up on Thursday and camp-out. :)

How early is too early if I'm coming from Portland? If everything works out according to the schedule, we should be getting there around 9:00am.

I was planning on getting in line between 9 and 10am myself on Friday. I can't sleep in anymore because I get up early for work so I should easily be up by then. Might have to wake up my friend but we should be in line playing DS by then :)

The problem with predictions of "how early is early enough" is that no one knows. The numbers are going up each year to such a huge degree that all the laws laid down previously go right out the window when people start showing up. Better organization for lines will be a mitigating factor this year, but will it be enough to counter a predicted 100%+ (200%+?) increase in attendance? No one knows. It is a mystery.

Last year for the "big ticket" items (basically the PA Panels) there was a line... how early did you need to get in line? Well that depended on how good of seats you wanted... some people had to stand in the back. But I'd say an hour in line last year got you nice seats... 45 minutes in line got you seats a little further out... and 30 minutes in line got you the worst seats or standing... not sure if anyone was turned away at the door. And those are just estimates. The longest I waited last year was I think about an hour and a half... and that was because I wanted to get in line for the panel before the line went outside... it was worth it for shade & AC during the wait :) Lines outside shouldn't be a problem this year though.

This year there is of course more people. But if the lines move faster, and the venue has more & better seating... then hopefully lines shouldn't explode out of porportion. I'd plan on 45min to an hour in line for the big events... but line time doesn't have to be painful. Meet your fellow PAXers & play some DS :)
