Hello all, I've just recently got a new 320gb hard disk for the laptop onto which I've put Windows XP, and a friend recommended I split 'er up into partitions. How would I go about making partitions after installing XP? And is it worth making partitions if I'm going to be mainly using this disk for games and music? Does making partitions give any speed boost?

-"What the fuck is this?" *holds up bowling ball*
-"Obviously you're not a golfer."

Once you have formated the drive (installed xp and not seting up more than one partition) you can't make more partitions without erasing your hard drive. When setting up xp when you come to the screen that asks what partition you want to install it on thats where you can delete partitons and create new ones of diffrent sizes.

There exist utilities to resize and create partitions after they have been created, such as PartitionMagic. Free solutions exist as well.

Splitting your drive into multiple partitions won't give you a speed boost, but it can help you organize your files as each partition will show up as a new logical drive. As well, it can make nuking and cleaning your machine easier in the future. Say if you want to nuke your Windows and reinstall it again, if you have your documents, music, and miscellaneous files off from your system partition, you can just erase the Windows drive wholesale and reinstall without going through the whole backup/restore deal.
