Interplay Ready for "Fallout Online"
Interplay has posted an exponential rise in revenues on the sale of the Fallout IP to Bethesda. Now the firm says it's ready to secure funding for "Fallout Online."
Interplay CEO Herve Caen said in a statement, "I am pleased with the progress the company has made, particularly with our debt load, which has improved from $59 million in December 2001 to less than $3 million today.
"
With that difficult period behind us, we are focused on securing funding for development of a Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) based on the popular Fallout franchise. Along with our strategy of leveraging our existing portfolio of intellectual gaming properties, Fallout Online will play a key role in the future of Interplay."
Net income for the quarter ended June 30 was $5.46 million, up from net income of $2.6 million for the comparable quarter a year ago.
Revenues for the three months were $5.8 million up 2,431 percent year-on-year, thanks to the sale of the Fallout IP. Six-month revenues were $5.9 million, up 1,708 percent.
Interplay sold off the rights to the revered RPG franchise Fallout earlier this year for $5.75 million to Bethesda, developer of Oblivion and Fallout 3. Interplay then obtained the exclusive license for the online Fallout game.
Interplay published Black Isle Studio's Fallout for PC in 1997.
Hell yeah?
Fuck yeah!
I WILL EAT MY OWN COCK IF IT COMES OUT! SIG THAT!
I hope you have some for the rest of the class Pharezon.

Can you hear it? The hive has already begun to stir.....soon they will rise......NMA.
I don't like MMORPGs. I'm not going to say that it's wrong for Interplay to push Fallout in that direction, since it's their IP and they could definitely use the money (and that would be an incredibly short-sighted and asinine thing to say anyway), but it's not the direction I'd have liked to see the series go in, though if there was ever an MMO I'd like, a name like Fallout would probably be it. But, three cheers to Interplay for crawling back from the void of bankrupcy.
Any word on whether or not Obsidian is thought to be involved in any way?

Interplay was the publisher, BlackIsle was the developer, so quite frankly they better get someone good to do it. They already handed the franchise to the people who can do it best - Bethesda, so fingers crossed they do the same for FOO

This isn't even "Cautious Optimism" but just "How the fuck could it work?"
I'll just say I have no faith in Interplay to make good decisions. The Bethesda deal strikes me as less doing right by the franchise, but more big dump-truck full of money (or little dump-truck, Interplay needs teh moneyz).
All the people who are positive about this or think it's going to come out are extraordinarily optimistic.
It'll be a generic MMO with a Fallout skin on it. And its by Interplay, which hasn't released a good game in a decade.
So you're not too keen on what Bethesda have done so far eh? I think they've done a great job and it was actually a good choice of developers to hand the franchise to. From what I remember reading in one of the Bethesda guy's blogs is that they approached Interplay, not the other way around.

I'm not saying it wasn't a good choice. I'm just saying that if Derek Smart had a competing offer involving more money, he probably would've gotten the liscence.
Hell, give it to Blizzard since they seem to be the most capable at making and maintaining an MMO.. (yeah, I know.. never gonna happen).
Ah yeah, I see what you mean. Flog it off to the highest bidder regardless of who it is. I mistook the bit where you said "The Bethesda deal strikes me as less doing right by the franchise" as something else.
My bad.
Fallout 3 will fucking rock though.

Right?
I want to play this like an online SRPG - is that.. is that wrong?
As long as this game has FFA PvP, max gore, drugs and hookers... I'm sold.
And they haven't really had a good game in a loong time...
I'd prefer this to not happen.
I never asked for this!
Developing is different to publishing... thought I cleared that up.

Yes which is why this will be poop like brotherhood of steel. They didn't make the original fallout games they just published them.
I never asked for this!
You attack its weak point for massive damage
Currently playing: GW2 and TSW
it just won't work
You're right, a MMO in a post nuclear fallout world will never work, lets go back to swords, magic and fairy fuck-knuckle bitches.

...most likely?
Currently playing: GW2 and TSW
for a couple of months anyways
This could be the best thing ever or it would be the most horrendous thing to ever be created by man.
It's times like these I really hate being an optimistic pessimist. My brain will be fighting itself 'till the wee hours of the morning >_<
September 2004 and still not old.
There's another post-apocalyptic mmo in development called Fallen Earth that looks promising. If some upstart company can make such a premise seem plausible, if not entirely successful, I'm sure Interplay can muster up enough to make it...
bah, who am I kidding, it's gonna get blown away by the juggernaut of WoW.
