Double Fine's new game - Brutal Legend?
Posted by Jason | Comments: 0
According to the Norwegian web site gamer.no, Tim's new game is going to be unveiled at the Games Convention in Leipzig next week. The page's text has been translated by the fine folks of this Idle Thumbs forum thread and it apparently reads something like this:
Vivendi confirms that Psychonauts creator Tim Schafer will be showing a new project during the game convention Games Convention. Brutal Legend is the name of the game guru Tim Schafer's latest game. It will be shown at Games Convention next week, and Gamer.no will be in Leipzig to cover the event.
According to distributer Vivendi you'll be playing a Rock'n Roll roadie played by actor Jack Black (known from King Kong and School of Rock). Black dies and goes to Hell, and quickly finds it's not that cool to be where the sun never shines.
The goal is to escape to Rock'n Roll heaven. In order to do this the main character has to solve various tasks and puzzles. It's also said that there will be elements of strategy in the game, for example when controlling several characters at once.
Furthermore, Heavy Metal is apparently a big thing in Brutal Legend. We don't have any more information, but we promise to keep a close eye when the game is presented at Games Convention next week.
Schafer has earlier contributed to (or co-created, whatever) games such as Full Throttle, Psychonauts, Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle.
As amazing as that sounds, it may be wise to remain skeptical until next week, when the game will supposedly be announced. Still, this does somewhat gel with previously circulated rumors that music would play a significant role in the game, and it also makes Jack Black's recently witnessed garb seem slightly less coincidental. Stay tuned!
so is this a film tie-in, or they just signed Jack Black up for their game? Either way, interested for more.
Dont think its a movie tie in, and I think he just likes Doublefine. He has been seen wearing Psychonauts tees at various gigs apparently. We will probably know more at Leipzig if true.
Hopefully they can make a good game this time around. Psychonauts was a broken mess but had the best writing in the industry.

What the fuck? Are we talking about the same Psychonauts? Where, exactly, was it a "broken mess"?

Buggy, incomplete code and some gameplay that was stale and derivative. Perhaps broken mess was taken out of context. The game was great, but the ports and unpatched versions were hella problematic. I was talking about the game from a purely technical standpoint, not the game itself.

love tim schafer, but man...what a lame title for a game. grim fandango and psychonauts are two of my favorite game titles ever, so this is a pretty big let-down by comparison.

I'm with you on the title...it sounds like a made for Sci Fi flick.

or a 'Steven Seagal must fight the henchmen a local ruthless businessman to save the honour of a nearby orphanage' kind of film.

Man, that's exactly the cheesiness that typifies what The D goes for anyway. This is entirely within character, I feel.
The concept sounds real appealing to me. I've got high hopes for this one. I'm actually currently playing through Psychonauts for the first time but I've played plenty of his older games.

This cave leads to the inhospitable surface of the planet. There is nothing for you to see there.

i wouldn't call it cheesy so much as painfully generic and not in line with the concept at all. oh well. the game's what really matters.
Someone posted this in the other Doublefine thread that closed shop:
"The whole thing was a lie. What I'm really working on is Zak McKracken 2 for the PSP."--Tim Schafer, speaking to International House of Mojo.
"There have been some rumors lately. Some stuff was true. Like the stuff about me being a good kisser. But a lot of it was false. I would love to tell everybody about the Monkey Island first-person shooter that we're working on, but I can't yet. Not at Leipzig either. But in a couple of months I can. In fact, you will be hearing so much about Monkey Shooter that you will get sick of it and you'll probably want to curl up in the back of your closet just to get away from it for a while."--Tim Schafer, speaking to GameSpot.

So...I'm not sure what this man is up to.
I would buy 5 copies of a Zak McKracken 2. I played that fan made sequel and it just made me hungry for more.

Why not? They've already done Pirates of the Carribean, and Tomorrowland (what did you think "Meet the Robinsons was? It was a Tomorrowland movie co-mingled with elements from the book A Day With Wilbur Robinson.)

FAIL
yeah uh, what?
It had some bugs, and was a tad rushed, but it was completely playable.
Also, Tim Schaefer WOOOOOOOOO
This game will be a throbbing mass of awesome.
If any of you haven't ever read Tim Schafer's blog, go to www.doublefine.com and read it. NOW.
For example, here's an entry in which he announces buttons for sale. But he doesn't do it in a normal way, oh no. He does this:
He also has a pathological fear of the Weinermobile.
but still. love tim schafer
I'm for it.

Although Psychonauts demands a sequel, what with the way it ended.
His only fault is that he is a slow god who needs to hurry up and make more games!
I think not!
2009 is a year of Updates - one every Monday. Hopefully. xx

My hatred for this man knows no bounds.
This news/rumor is like telling me that Carlos Mencia is going to play the lead role in the next Kevin Smith movie.
What's not in line with the concept? It's rock, ergo brutal, and you have to be pretty legendary to out-rock Hell.
Anyway, yeah, game. Should be fun to watch its production.
So...I'm not sure what this man is up to.
The Super Monkey Ball game for the Wii has an FPS mini-game in it.
The fact that a Super Monkey Ball FPS exists fills me with both horror and joy simultaniously.
And I don't care what Tim works on, it will be bought so hard. He could make a game based on Disney's Its a Small World ride and I would buy it.
ts2 is my deus ex.
everytime someone mentions it i have to break out the gamecube and play it all over again.
Dammit! now I need to play Deus Ex.
It's like my Grim Fandango
I would buy 5 copies of a Zak McKracken 2. I played that fan made sequel and it just made me hungry for more.
