This may belong in H/A rather than here... if so, apologies.
I've recently decided to buy a DS Lite, and while my starter game will probably be Pokemon Diamond (shut up) I'd like to know what you all think are some of the "essentials" in the DS lineup so far.
Mario Kart DS
New Super Mario Bros
Advance Wars Dual Strike Elite Beat Agents <- 2 Clubhouse Games <- 1
Kirby's Canvas Curse Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow <- 3
Numbers indicate my most played carts (as well as 3 of my favorite games of all time).
To be fair, I'm not sure how non-regulars/newly joined people are supposed to know about the DS wiki. Searching for similar threads is good, though.
I enjoyed the Phoenix Wright games the most on my DS. While there are a lot of great Nintendo/classic sequels and such, I was disappointed in how Bomberman, NSMB, Castlevanias, Yoshi's Island DS, etc were worse than their predecessors. They're good, but disappointing at the same time to me.

So... discuss.
Don't worry, people here won't patronize you for pokemon.
Pokemon (like you said)
Metroid Hunters
Tetris DS
Age of Empires (good turn based-game, not as highly rated as Advance Wars but I like medieval more)
Animal Crossing
It's hard to say without you saying what kind of genres are you into. As for new things that are quite unlike anything on other platforms I would recommend:
Trauma Centre: Arcade, surgery. Very Hard.
Phoenix Wright: Lawyer, point and click game. Like a very Good book.
Ouedan/EBA: Awesome Rhythm games.
Kirby Canvas Curse: A stylus platformer that works beautifully.
Brain Training: A ten minute a day game, unlike anything you've played. Derided by some, for not being a 'proper' game, which is exactly why it is interesting.
I'm playing Diamond right now - first visit back to the Pokemon world since I played a few days of Yellow on the GB Pocket - it's absolutely amazing. I don't think I've played a game with such a huge amount of depth for years (I normally don't do RPGs). It's phenominal.
Advance Wars
Animal Crossing
Brain Age
Bleach and Bleach 2nd
Clubhouse Games
Castlevania DoS and PoR
Contact
Custom Robo
Elite Beat Agents
Hotel Dusk
Kirby Canvas Curse
Mario Kart
Meteos
Nanostray
New Super Mario Bros
Ouendan 1 & 2
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and Justice For All
Planet Puzzle League
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Sonic Rush
Super Mario 64
Tetris
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Touch Detective
I own all these games (except Ouendan 1 & 2) and can vouch for them personally.
I consider these all pretty critical games for the DS:
Mario Kart
Advance Wars
Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania Portrait of Ruin
New Super Mario Bros
Meteos
Elite Beat Agents
Kirby Canvas Curse
Planet Puzzle League
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
Tetris DS
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Yoshi's Island DS
But I also consider very, very good, recommended games:
Ouendan
Picross DS
Dragon Quest Rocket Slime
Clubhouse games
Lunar Knights
Sonic Rush
Puzzle Quest
Phoenix Wright
Bleach DS: Souten Ni Kekaru Unmei (jpn, but coming to US eventually)
Jump Ultimate Stars
Brain Age
Megaman ZX
Konami Classics Arcade Series
I also consider very good games, but not necessarily "must haves":
Wario Ware Touched
Metroid Prime Pinball
Bomberman Land
Final Fantasy 3
StarFox Command
Yoshi's Touch'n'Go
Brothers in Arms
Nanostray
Resident Evil DS
Phantom Hourglass has been getting amazing reviews for the import. So keep that on your radar for sure!
If Pokemon is the first game you get, that'll all you'll need for a while. It's the first Pokemon game I've played since Blue all those years ago, and it's amazing. I bought it the day it came out and I'm still playing it. Depending on how interested you are in raising your pokemon, it could keep you occupied for years.
I've also put a lot of time into Mario Kart DS and Planet Puzzle League.
Animal Crossing Wild World
Contact
Custom Robo Arena
Daigasso! Band Brothers (import)
Dragonball Z Supersonic Warriors 2
Dragon Quest Heroes Rocket Slime
Elite Beat Agents
Final Fantasy III
Hotel Dusk Room 215
Kirby Canvas Curse
Lost in Blue
Lost in Blue 2
Lost Magic
Mario Kart DS
Mario and Luigi Partners in Time
Meteos
New Super Mario Bros
Nintendogs Dachshund and Friends
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Justice for All
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Team
Pokemon Pearl
Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon (soon, soon)
Sonic Rush
Super Mario 64 DS
Trauma Center Under the Knife
Wario Ware Touched
Yoshi Touch and Go
I've played and recommend:
Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! (import)
Trace Memory
Touch Detective
Pac Pix
Magical Starsign
That said, I don't think I'll ever finish the Sixth Stratum. The repetition's beginning to get to me.
Meanwhile, I'm having fun with Sangokushi Taisen DS. What is it? It's this turned into this. In case that's not clear enough, it's a CCG/RTS arcade game ported onto the DS set in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms era. The arcade costs $5 for a starter deck, and like $3/game (-$1 every time you win in a row until $1), but you get a random card after every game as well. The DS is a one-time cost of currently $29.90 on play-asia (there's some deal for it) + 5 extra cards.
Other good imports are of course Ouendan 1+2, Bleach DS 2nd, Taiko no Tatsujin DS (this one's actually sold out, and I don't have it but I assume it's good if it's sold out), and Jump Ultimate Stars.
Locally available stuff that I've liked were Meteos, Trauma Center, and Etrian Odyssey.
Since I'm harping on about imports, here are some Play-Asia coupons that you can use until Aug 23.

Fast-paced, frenetic action:
Trauma Centre - intense surgery sim game. However, it got remade on the Wii, and it's better there, so if you have a Wii, skip this.
Ouendan, Ouendan 2, Elite Beat Agents - I personally consider this God's gift to the Rhythm genre (sorry, GH!). In all three of these games, Normal mode is something you put up with so you can unlock the bliss of Hard and Insane modes.
Meteos - Not played personally, but apparently it's really good.
Curling up with a good book or brainteaser:
Phoenix Wright 1 & 2 (and soon to be 3): Essentially an interactive novel, the PW/GS series oozes humour and charm.
Hotel Dusk - Not played personally, but supposed to be very good.
Good ol'-fashioned 2D gaming like momma used to make:
New Super Mario Bros. - Has a great difficulty curve of easy to mildly challenging - until you try for all the Gold Coins.
Megaman ZX - Not as good as its GBA predecessor (in fact, if you don't own the Megaman Zero games, hun them down. NOW.), but an extremely solid game in its own right.
Castlevania - It's Castlevania. Buy if you like, don't buy if you don't. I personally prefer Dawn of Sorrow to Portrait of Ruin, but it's really your call.
Kirby: Canvas Curse - Not really classic 2D gaming, but immensely fun it its own right.
RPGs - turn- based and all random battley:
Final Fantasy III - Classic RPG gaming doesn't get much better than this.
Pokemon - It's Pokemon. Aaand you already own it, anyway.
Etrian Odyssey - I cannot stress this enough - BUY THIS GAME. Up until Persona 3, it is the best RPG of the year.
Strategy RPGs -
Yggdra Union - Yeah, it's a GBA game, but frankly, the DS is an sRPG wasteland right now. Hoshigami and Luminous Arc... yeah, no. Anyway, YU always need more love.
Slow, methodical strategy gameplay:
Advance Wars Dual Strike - This game will chew up 100 hours of your life, easily.
Other:
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime - TANK BATTLES ARE AWESOME. Aside from that, it's Zelda-lite (really, really lite), with a MnL:SS quality localization. Buy if you don't mind extremely easy games.
Puzzle Quest - It's apparently coming to just about every system under the sun, but it's on the DS too, and it's awesome, so...
Lunar Knights - aRPG with surprisingly deep elements. Really good buy.
I'll list what I own and bold the most recommended based on play time, overall quality, and replayability
Advance Wars Dual Strike Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin Elite Beat Agents
Final Fantasy III Mario Kart DS
Metroid Prime: Hunters
New Super Mario Bros.
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
Planet Puzzle League Trauma Center: Under the Knife
This thread fails for not having mentioned the best DS game out, Etrian Odyssey
That game sounds like pure masochism.
It's not for everyone but it is massively addictive if you can get into a challenging RPG with lots of party and character customization and a very traditional battle system. It has an emphasis on exploration, customization, and map making over any kind of story, which may or may not appeal to any given gamer and the difficulty is pretty high sometimes. It seems particularly cruel early on, before you know what kind of characters complement eachother in your party and what kinds of skills are worth investing in, and again in the post game, but if you are thoughful in designing your party and skill set and use some strategy it's not too evil.
hm, maybe if you used the back of your fingernail to tap. I do that usually with games that require minimal stylus input. I imagine friction would slow down your regular fingertip too much for the wheels.

More like daily. But hey, it's fun to keep the lists of everyone's favorite games up to date and help people at the same time.
Or is that not updated anymore?

Assuming one doesn't have chubby sausage-like fingers, would it be possible?
It's also the best puzzle game ever.
I'm not typing up a list of other good games for the ds, because I'd be here all fucking day.
EDIT:: The original meteos, I haven't played the new Disney version. I've heard that it's both tons better and fucking awful.
