Warriors Orochi (Dynasty Warriors + Samurai Warriors) -- I'll Give you a Thrashing
When I spotted the screens for Warriors Orochi this morning I had to post over here. I know there are some Dynasty Warrior fans here at G&T that might be interested in this title for the 360. The game is the first to blend the styles from the popular Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors into one game.
Warriors Orochi
Without warning, the evil Serpent King Orochi descended from the skies above. Using his unworldly powers to shatter time and space, Orochi kidnapped the strongest, wisest and most courageous warriors from Ancient China and Feudal Japan in a scheme to test his might against the heroes of these ages.
Most of the great armies of these two periods would succumb to the might of Orochi. Yet powerful warriors remain and are ready to continue the fight. Now, the greatest showdown in history is about to take place…
Warriors Orochi boasts an amazing roster of 77 playable characters from both the Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors franchises, while four action-packed “crossover†storylines unveil events where characters from either series are pitted against one another. The game’s new “Team Battle System†and “Weapon Fusion†push Tactical Action to a whole new level. For the first time in KOEI’s Tactical Action games, players can create their own three-person tag team. At any given time, one warrior will be engaged in battle, while the other two are recuperating; restoring their Life Meters and Musou Gauges. Every character is categorized according to offensive ability, and with new fighting techniques, it’s up to the player to find the most lethal combination of warriors. “Weapon Fusion†lets players combine the attributes from different weapons for more devastating results.
You are not alone in that guilty pleasure. I don't know about this one, though. I'm going to use DWG to hold me over til DW6, which is supposed to finally take advantage of HD tech.
Love these games. I'm so on this. The only problem is I can never keep the names straight but I'll always remember my main man, Sima Yi. Evil, effeminate and fights with a black feather fan. Love him.
Country of origin really, and this game combines heros from both of the games, so you'll have the japanese dudes with the chinese dudes, yet they will all mostly look american still.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
I love these games, too, but I wish they'd put a little more effort into them visually for the next-generation systems. It still looks like a Playstation 2 game from those screenshots.

They better have Magoichi Saika in this game. I kicked ass with him in the original Samurai Warriors.

Err...What's the difference between Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors?
The settings and characters. Plus Samurai Warriors has ninjas and ninja paths (which are alternative routes through levels that only ninja can travel).
Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this game. I loved playing as Hanzo Hattori in SW2 and now I can play as him AND Ma Chao, Zhao Yun and Guan Ping.
I also want to pick up Dynasty Warriors Vol 2 for the PSP since it combines DW5, DW5:XL and DW5:E, but I can't find anywhere that has it.
Here's the full character list for anyone wondering who is in it:

that's funny you think that. most japanese people i know think americans are like this:
i blame the "dumb" part on our administration for the past 7 years.
So...how exactly does this 3 character deal work in 2P mode? If each player gets 3 characters, then holy shit. I might just have to pick this up the day it launches.
Also, any word on the music? I loved how DW5 Empires let you set the playlist to only play songs from a specific game (like DW3). I'd preorder right now if that was guaranteed.

looking on gamefaqs, seems like 2p co-op only allows one 3 char team.
didnt see anything about playlists.

Bad things about this game.
A) Release date is around 9/21 (not sure exactly when but I think this is it)

Damn. Suddenly, my balls aren't being tickled quite as much as they once were. Still, I suppose that's one more character than we'd normally get.
Unco-ordinated's list is, uh, uncoordinated? He's in there somewhere. From the unlocking information stuff:
Saika Magoichi Clear Shu Story - Stage 2
So, yeah, he'd best be in the list.
Edit: Seems the list isn't categorized by where/which side they came from, but which side they're in now? I guess.

Ok, that's good. I like the fact that in SW Magoichi seemed to be a fuedal-era Han Solo.
And I'll probably pick this up when I go get Halo 3 as well.

Heck yeah! Magoichi's final mission in Samurai Warriors 1 was one of my favorites. Probably the only castle mission I could slightly enjoy. His little speech beforehand is pretty badass as well.

Magoichi was the only character I got the "Good" ending for. Maybe Nobunaga's sister as well. Maybe.
Not that I want to start this conversation here, but when I first played Dynasty Warriors I really didn't enjoy it all, but when I played Samurai Warriors it really clicked with me. It's been a while since I've played a DW game, but from what I remember it was a lot more strict than SW in terms of getting to the right place on time, helping out this general or that general promptly etc.
But anyways, I too loved both Samurai Warriors and Samurai Warriors 2 (just unlocked Musashi Miyamoto) and am quite looking forward to how this one turns out. Unfortunately, due to all the other things coming out I'll probably be waiting on buying this one for a little while. Of course, when I do get in the mood to buy this, I'll probably break down and buy the Gundam one as well. I really enjoyed the demo---both despite and because it played exactly like what I would expect a Gundam branded Dynasty Warriors game would play like.
But does anyone find it a bit funny to see all these historical characters in these ridiculous and unfeasible situations? I think it would be hilarious to see an American or even European equivalent to this game.

I would like to see that as well, but I really don't see how it would work unless they dig DEEP into history.
(Like Bronze age stuff)

Same here. The controls somehow don't feel right in DW games. And mounted attacks only feel powerful to me in Samurai Warriors. Even in SW2:Empires, horses feel kind of weak in comparison.
What's funny is, they keep adding all these characters. But I actually hate playing pre-fab officers in these games. There's no value in a leveling-up system for me, and no feeling of accomplishment, unless I train the character from a nobody into one of the great warlords of the Sengoku Jidai.
My ideal Musou game would be focused on a very deep character design and leveling system. You'd train your officer, his steed, his bodyguard unit, and take charge of the outfitting and organization of your army, and command them in the field.
And you know what would freaking rule in online play? When you give orders to officers under your command over long distances, it should be done by dispatch rider. If your opponent has an ambush unit hidden along that path, or some very fast light cavalry, he can intercept your rider and the orders don't reach your officers. That would be insane.
I would like to see that as well, but I really don't see how it would work unless they dig DEEP into history.

Well, from what I know of many of the Samurai Warrior characters, they took a lot of characters about which very little was known and made them into full-fledged characters with their own backstory. If they can do that with this game, they can surely do it with European history. I guess the real trick would be to find a period as full of war and shifting alliances as the Sengoku period in Japan. That may be the real problem---finding a period that's as messy as that one seems to be.

Don't blame me, I got the list from Wikipedia and then re-typed it. I find it just as stupid as you that a lot of characters have been switched around sides.

30 yrs war?
Would be cool to laser-beam peasants to death as Cardinal Richelieu.

I'm seeing World War 1, and a hero soldier slaughtering the schmuck Entente or Central Power soldiers from trench to trench by swinging his rifle around in giant arcs then coming around for the ground smash to flip over tanks, having the Russian Revolution campaign as an unlockable campaign, and so on. Plus what with the whole malleable history aspect of the Dynasty Warriors game (never played SW), you could have the Ottoman Empire moving into Russia or whatever.
But does anyone find it a bit funny to see all these historical characters in these ridiculous and unfeasible situations? I think it would be hilarious to see an American or even European equivalent to this game.
Bladestorm: The Hundred Years War brings to life the intensity and drama of a war-torn Medieval Europe featuring a rich tapestry of legendary characters including Joan of Arc and Prince Edward, the Black Prince.
Utilizing a next-generation game engine, the game's armies collide on the battlefield at an unprecedented scale. Countless numbers of men consumed with ferocious intensity converge on screen, where tactics and cunning combine with valor and might to determine who is left standing at the end of the day. The game puts players in the role of a rogue commander and gives them direct control of mercenary units in fierce clashes with English and French forces. You must adjust strategies as skirmishes evolve, and then deploy the unit best-suited to handle the challenge. Game progression is wholly dependent on a player's decisions and accomplishments on the battlefield.

Kingdom Under Fire is what I meant. Basicly you had the rock-paper-scissors style troops with a couple of extras (Foot soldiers > Pikemen > Calivary > soilders, then magic and archers) You had a few different formations to maximize their effectiveness but when it came down to a grand melee, it turned into DW-lite and you controlled the General/Commander.
