I picked up for $10 at Target and while i can fly well enough, I can't fight worth shit. I looked up gamefaqs but it didn't have any advice along those lines. Help please for a rookie.

I bought it, spent 45 minutes trying to figure out how to accelerate and then gave up. Worst waste of €15 ever.

    Never played X2.

Played X3. It's hard, very technical, and has almost no documentation. You would have been at least better off buying it from Steam.

The thing is that this is the exact sort of game i love to play and the fact that I can build my own economic empire is even better but my laptop is kind of old now and I can't run X3 (own it) and it will be a while before I have a better rig, so I am playing this but I don't know if I can play it well with a laptop keyboard and mouse.

    Advice?

IIRC in X3 you can purchase ship circuitry that can automate combat for you. If that's in X2 also, go out, find a few derelict ships and toss that on there. Then command your fighters from a comfortable distance, muah.

Your best bet is to start reading the guides in the Egosoft forums. They are created by the community and have much more information than anything the creators put out.

Start with some general guides, then you can get into specifics as you need them.

X3 has a shitload of documentation. Just none of it official. There are enough guides on the official forums from players to keep you reading for days, and all of them are useful.
