How was it like when the 2 Gamecube Zeldas were revealed?
I'm sure quite a few of you already seen it. See, back then, I wasn't in the messageboard/forum scene. In fact, I think the first MB I joined was in early 2005. Back then I would just simply visit IGN or Gamespot, check for any interesting news and be on my way. Now, as a fan of the 'realistic' Zelda, I was quite ecstatic when this was revealed, even though I thought WW was a good game on its own merits. But I'm curious how the reactions were on the internet. Was there any major backlash? I am also curious to see how was it when WW was first shown. I don't suppose we have any threads in the archives about it, do we? I tried to search, but I don't think it goes that far.
a pandering reversal of art direction? people got extremely excited and will, to this day, claim very, very irrational things about twilight princess. this video, the gerstmann review backlash, the vicious and terrified, incoherent praises, all of it due to an unfortunately rabid idolatry.

So what?
Is there a problem with having a good time about something even if it really wasn't that big a deal? People partied like the world was ending on new years eve 1999 but was that anything more people going nuts over an insignificant little event?

I remember a lot of bitching and "WTF!" going around at the WW release trailer, since everyone was expecting a continuation of that Spaceworld demo (there were several dissidents, of course, but the majority seemed to be rather disappointed at "teh kiddiez" look).
Ironically, after TP, it shifted the fuck away around. Now there's this general notion that TP is completely generic and WW was much better and WTF wasn't the damned thing cel-shaded.
There's no accounting for taste, really. It's all bizarre and on a whim.

I was speaking about the trends symbolized by the video.
Hopeless fanboys who scream 'OH GOD....OH MY GOD' at a 2 minute trailer of the next Zelda game while throwing up the rock hands and basically crying.
Trends of ignoring the quality of a game over the hype generated by fansites at e3.
So much crap is personified in that video. And Nintendo was loving it, even though that whole e3 show for them was just horrible and in my opinion Twilight princess was nothing special in the end anyways. But that's a whole other discussion.

I was there for that announcement. Sadly, that video doesn't catch the sounds of the guy behind me blatantly shouting obscenities to no one in particular. I didn't catch any of the audio because all I heard was "FUCKIN' OH MY GOD! HOLY FUCK! HOLY FUCK! SHIT DAMN FUCK!" and then he repeated it 3 or 4 times. I have the video still, and I'll see if I can find it and try to encode it and upload it tomorrow in the day.
It is a little jarring sometimes to see peoples warped sense of perspective in action, but this behavior is hardly unique to the e3 type community.
As a resident of Columbus, OH, there is so much truth to this statement. People excited about Zelda pretty much have nothing on rabid buckeye fans around here.

When Ohio State played Texas last year, I was walking to the stadium and I saw a giant pack of Buckeye fans on campus. I screamed "GO BIG BLUE!!" in their direction while throwing up the horns, and they fucking threw beer bottles at me. On my campus. When it was pretty obvious I was joking considering I was decked out in burnt orange.

Classy.
They probably would reacted the same way if you told them that the meter where they parked their pickup has run out. If if the kitchen was closed. Or if their dvd rental was a day late and it had a buck fifty late fee. Or if you were playing in a blues band in a country bar.

RAWHIDE.
Anyway, my philsophy on this sort of thing: fanboys will be fanboys.

Not really that insignificant. First you have to remember that if you were there in that room for this, then you were amongst the first people in the world to have seen this game. A game that promised to be the biggest baddest Gamecube game period. There's an air of excitement and exclusivity that only multiplies with the number of people in the room. The whole event is designed to build that kind of excitement, that way when these editors go back and write their articles and try to think of Zelda, it just makes them remember that feeling.
That's not what's wrong with the games industry, that's just Reggie Fils-Aime doing a damned good job.
I imagine Kiwistrike to be the guy who stands back silently while watching the Super Bowl (or your sports game of choice) and says "why are people so excited? They're obviously pandering to fans with these commericals. And seriously, it's just a game... people say such incoherent shit about it!"
It's OK for people to get excited about something, relax.

He also sounds like he's bitter that TP wasn't cel-shaded.
The irony of this whole thread is that it's in a forum where every new game is met with "I NEED NEW PANTS!".
You're an odd man, polago.

Yeah, it's pretty funny how things have come full circle. When they first showed the Zelda tech demo back in 2001 I think it was, people were excited to see a beautiful, realistically-styled Zelda game. Then when actual footage of The Wind Waker was shown later, people kind of scratched their heads, wondering how things could have gone so wrong. I don't think anybody was fully on board with the cell-shaded look, and many people outright hated it. Of course, when the game came out, it was lauded as artistically brilliant, and remains as one of the prettiest games to date thanks to its art style.
And then, there's the video in the OP where they reveal Twilight Princess and everyone goes nuts. Yet, when TP finally comes out, many people find the realistic graphics to be not up to par, and long for the endearing art style of Wind Waker. Bottom line - gamers are a bunch of flaky douchebags.
When that video was shown, I tried not to talk to people about it, because they were all excited like the fans in this video while I silently was very disapointed at how generic, stale, lifeless and boring-looking Zelda had become.
I hesitated a lot, but I still gave it a chance. I bought Twilight Princess and really enjoyed it. However, while the story and map/dungeon design is a million times superior to WW, I still feel WW was better. It felt much more alive.
Oh, well. At least, TP didn't become the bastard child of OoT I feared it would be.
Haha, that is my favorite videogame moment. I was so fucking excited when I saw that trailer I was shaking. And I always smile when I watch the unveil, exactly because it shows people still were getting extremely excited for Zelda. And the Miyamoto thing is just fantastic.
Of the course, the hype paid off for me, when Twilight Princess turned out to be one of my favorite games ever.
And kiwistrike, you just sound like a complete buzzkill.

really, when people talk about whats wrong with the gaming industry, you need to look no further than that video to make a solid argument.
I guess I don't follow... care to elaborate?
Fixed for accuracy.

Even beyond Starcraft II's?
Unbelievable.
So what?

Im pretty sure the Sony e3 2006 press conference thread was page 3 to page 109 in like 20 minutes. churned through about 3 of those threads.
I was speaking about the trends symbolized by the video.
Yeah this is what is really wrong with the gaming industry a bunch of nerds getting overly excited when something important to them is announced
what wretches

never said that.
edit:
whoops, nevermind. I was thinking of something else.
Blasphemy, the Sixaxis wasn't even announced yet!
And as for Starcraft II, we all already knew that was coming.

The thread where they announced the motion control for the Sixaxis is one of my favorite threads ever, but I think it got pruned, which is a shame
The best part was the one guy who said a couple minutes before they announced it "haha I bet the feature is gyros"

yeah that thread just exploded. was like 10 pages of just OH MY GOD and THOSE FUCKERS. Was actually hilarious.
Really? You want to use the word despicable to describe that scene? What manner of controlled, brainless support would you like one to show then?
Company shows video.
Fans go apeshit.
Dude comes out with some Zelda toys and thanks the crowd.
The end.
Really? Despicable?
Wow.... I am so fucking glad I am not you.
Yes, people went stupidly, overly bonkers. I don't get why that's wrong.
