Jeanne D'arc for the PSP: Slay the English Devils.
Jeanne d'Arc is a tactical role-playing game developed by Level-5 and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation Portable. It is Level-5's first RPG of this kind, as well as the studio's first production for the PlayStation Portable. The title's narrative makes use of various fantasy elements, and is loosely based on the story of Joan of Arc and her struggles against the English occupation of France during the Hundred Years' War in the early 14th century. The game received a 9.0 fun factor on IGN making it a promising title for the PSP.
The basic battle system is of the typical strategy RPG type. Some new elements added are character transformation and map effects like Burning Site and Unified Guard (called Connection Guard in the japanese version). Magic and special skills uses skill stones which can be bought from shops or from drops, the player is able to customize the character using skill stones and its also possible to synthesize them to create a more powerful skill stone.

I just started playing this game tonight, and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed. The presentation is great, the little anime cut scenes blend seamlessly with the game, and the combat is fun and interesting.
A lot of thought seems to have gone into the combat sytem. You can flank your opponents (attacking from the sides and rear) to cause massive damage (olol). You can also stand your fighters close together to increase their guard/defense. It's just the little things that make the game that much more enjoyable.
The game is very Fire Emblem like, but the gameplay is much deeper. It's a great reason to dust off your PSP.
Game's been getting a lot of great buzz; I think for $30 it's a good gamble, and this fall there isn't a lot of love my PSP is getting aside from Dracula X Chronicles.
I'm surprised there really aren't more modern SRPGs for either handheld; this and Luminous Arc are the first entires in a while.
I've been looking forward to this game for a while, but I'm currently far too into Persona 3 to purchase it. I'll probably end up picking this up when I go back to school in a week and realize I have a ton of time sitting around between classes where I can't play my console games.
Lighter, thinner, TV out, charging via USB, double the RAM which will help with faster loading, speakers and ad-hoc switch were moved. This was from Wikipedia.

My 360 is [strike]back[/strike] [strike]bricked[/strike] back!
Having played about 6-8 hours into this game its the most impressed with an SRPG since FF Tactics. The voice acting is well done (hee hee french accents) and it is a relatively accurate retelling of the original story. Except with Hiya! Super Dimensional Fortress transform power! tossed in their. Things like names of towns are preserved as well as events. Its an odd but enduring combination.
It's great that several decent rpg's are coming out for the PSP.
This and Brave Story :^:
And Dungeons & Dragons Tactics. :^:
I barely have time to devote to one of these titles, let alone both of them.
I rented D&D last night and played through the first mission - holy crap is this game deep! It's more of a D&D game than a tactics game, it seems, as the emphasis appears to be on rolling characters, equipping them, prepping for missions, then just using the tactics system as the battle engine. Not sure how I feel about that.
I'll have to rent Jeanne and see how that one plays out.

No Jeanne finds the soul edge and proceeds to lay waste to all of Europe which is now a barren and desolate place ruled by her iron fist and lesbian overlords.
This cannot be disputed, for it is fact.

Now that is a game that would persuade me into getting a PSP.

It is really deep. It's quite a fun game. I am a giant nerd who loves D&D and I am a tactics game whore so combining the two makes for good fun.
I picked this up yesterday as well. I wasn't going to, but it seems each of my local EBStops was only getting in a single copy and I couldn't resist.
Between this, Brave Story (excellent game, ignore the gamespot review), and Persona 3, my Wii and DS are collecting dust. I never thought I'd say that. The PSP is a great piece of hardware (better than the DS in my opinion), it's good to see some good games (read: games I enjoy) starting to come out. I don't think I used my PSP for more than few hours in the first year I had it. I'm using it all the time now. For some reason though, it seems very uncomfortable during extended playing. It just doesn't fit my hands well or something.
Also, you can add GameSpys 4.5/5 to the review notes in the OP if you want.
It starts off slow (like all SRPGs), but the few hours I spent with it last night were good fun. They tweaked the standard SRPG forumula just a little, and all for the better imho. The burning circles, and guard add a lot of strategy, as does the ability to completely retool your characters before each battle. The transforms seem like they could be overpowered, at least it is in the first couple of missions, but that's hopefully just to teach you the possibilities. I imagine you'll have to do free battles quite often to level up certain people (ahem, that weakling Lianne who is like 5 levels below everyone else at the moment). I couldn't get into FFTA (FFT is a different story), I don't think I'll be having that problem with JD'A.
Edit: For some reason it also made me wish for a Dynasty Tactics PSP game...
My brother picked this up and from what little I saw of it, it looked good. The pre-reviews looked good too and I love SRPGs. I'll have to wait until he's done with it to give it a shot, plus I'm hooked in Persona 3 and backlogged Luminous Arc, so it'll be a while before I have the chance to enjoy this.
I bought the psp expecting games like this, and I'm really happy (how many years later?) to finally see it come together. Excellent production values and a well managed story made starting this game feel like walking into a well-appointed luxury cruise, with helpful servants proffering amenities at every turn.
I can't say much about the long run yet, but what really comes out is the design. Menu navigation is really intuitive. I haven't been this excited by the early play of a game since Loco Roco. And I was expecting to regret the purchase, too, after so many crummy ports on the system.
The sad part is it's not widely available. I ended up trying six different before I finally secured a copy (including the Seattle Northgate Mall gamestop, where the clerks scoffed at the idea of trying to find a game in stock on the day it was released without a preorder). If you're in the Seattle area, they had a few of these at the EB downtown, but don't bother trying Game Crazy or Best Buy.
I picked it up, and it's great, but man, this has to be insulting to the English. :P The English are crazy, demon wielding... crazies. Young Henry is a maniac child of probably four who is all "SLAUGHTER THE WEAK" and "NO SURVIVORS!"

It is so awesome. I was playing it on the bus yesterday, and I kept getting my ass kicked. It's not the easiest game.
If you don't plan and use your team properly, you're fucked.
Oh no, it's nothing like that. You can still do attacks, but these skills you get, are special attacks that you teach your guy. Trust me, it works totally fine. You'll be "skilled up" very quickly in the game.

I think the game looks pretty, so if I happen upon it I might get it. I'd like to see some more reviews. So I shall go a diggin.
Correct. Like I said, you can also buy the rocks at stores.
You realize how absurd this sounds, right?
Edit: The thing that bothers me is that I've found it hard to get into games recently. I got Blade Dancer, played it for 5 minutes, and then put it away because I was standing in a town and someone said "Go find whoever" and I said "Fuck you!" and put the game down.
If the game doesn't give me a reason to give a shit then I don't give a shit and I go do something else. Will this game make me give a shit?

I wonder if there will be changes to the English release? Hope not.

I'll probably start it up tonight after my requisite couple hours of Persona 3.
Because if not, I'll just take the recently-price-cut PSP phat for my freakishly large hands.

I'm not to far into it, but so far the gameplay is great, and the cutscenes are really well done.

Man, the game has demons and magic.
I'd say any bets on the ending are off.

Ahahahah what this is so mine.
Edit: Well...the trailer didn't tell me a damn thing about the game.
Edit edit: Skill stones? I can't do anything until I find a fucking ROCK?
I don't care. I don't want to have to find a ROCK before I can use a SKILL.
You've played the game. Is it as asinine as it sounds?
"Well, I would attack him with a spear, but I haven't found the correct rock, you see."

I think the game looks pretty, so if I happen upon it I might get it. I'd like to see some more reviews. So I shall go a diggin.
Also, if you get the rock, you can do that spell forever. It's not like you pick up the rock, use it once, and then it's disposed of.
ooooooooooooh. So it's that sort of thing.
The review made it sound like...i'm not sure what...some sort of geology based game.
I'll agree.
So you have to find a stone to unlock a spell, kinda? And once it's unlocked you can use it forever?
You realize how absurd this sounds, right?

It's like Advanced Wars. You just move from battle to battle.
