Soo I got robbed after Friday Night, Me and a friend returned to my car after the music Friday night too see a window smashed, and some shit stolen. I guess the alarm scared them off not to steal anything in the front seat, but it did mean that I returned home Friday night instead of Sunday. Luggage bag full of clothes and other stuff, plus backpack full of swag, 2 DS's and games, and assortment of cards (SW:CCG, old school I know, the the PA game) gone. Well at least we enjoyed Day 1 and hopefully next year I will not park in an outside parking lot. Preferably I will not drive. Lesson learned, Park indoors or ride the train.
Hope you all continue the enjoy PAX and hope none of you have to leave early because of robbery.
Where did you park? break-in's arent very common in the downtown area, especially in many of the secured garages. Most of the time the key is to just leave expensive items out of view, I've seen a few shady folk go face against the window eye-ing the interiors for easy loot, but not downtown usually, downtown Seattle is as safe as it gets.

Seattle has virtually nonexistent violent crime, but this sort of crap is sadly kinda common, some crackhead stole my stereo a few months ago, the one time I forget to take the faceplate off.
Though I do live in the central district... It isn't as common downtown from what I understand.

One of the unlucky ones I guess, I was parked a few blocks away from the convention center at one of those U-Park lots. It was behind a church, across the street from a Greyhound station. Figured it was safe enough and it probably is, just left my luggage in plain view and some bum probably thought, "Hey warm clothes!" Good for him I guess.

I'd recommend getting a hotel in the north part of town. Somewhere around Northgate. There's a regional bus transit center within walking distance and they run until 2am. Bonus points for it being a park and ride that's fairly well protected.
Wow, that really sucks - as a local Seattleite I apologize for our city. It's weird, I've never known anyone to get their car broken into in downtown - heck, I never even lock my doors (I have a convertible, don't want people cutting the top to get in), and I've never had anything taken.
Hey guys, I'm moving to the U-District. I'm thinking about renting a monthly parking space outdoors, that is literally right next to the I-5 exit. What do you guys think?

Always lock your doors, and never leave anything in sight that might look valuable at all. I got my $5 sunglasses stolen out of my car in Greenlake and they also vandalized the interior for seemingly no reason at all.
Unfortunately the area where you parked (over by the Greyhound station) does tend to draw more shady characters. Still, it could have happened anywhere on the streets. Like others have said, keep all valuables out of sight.

About a year and a half ago in about that same area, my ex and I were going to her car to head outta downtown when we saw a guy no more than 20 about to break into her car. It's amazing what the phrase "HEY!!!" does to scare people, but she had an ipod and a nice stereo in her car, not to mention the car itself is worth about 25k. At the time she thought parking garages were a waste of money.
Not so much anymore.
Just be careful. Not everyone in DT Seattle is nice.
Also, I hope your weekend is not cut short in 2008!
wow, that sucks ass... but (not to be a dick or anything) anytime you include the words "across the street from a Greyhound station" in relation to where you parked your car... well, you should kind of expect that sort of thing. Bus stations are not really known as gathering points for the more upstanding members of society.

I parked on the street the entire weekend while at the convention, and I park on the street whenever I go downtown for an evening and haven't had a problem before. My brother had his car broken into by a smash & grab once... because he left some jackets in the back seat. Ever since then, I dont leave anything bigger than a single CD case in sight in my car. Swag bags, WoW:TCG starter box, everything went in the trunk.
Unfortunately the warning comes too late for you... and that REALLY sucks that it ruined your weekend & makes the city look so shitty... but yeah... never leave anything valuable in view in your car. Especially items like backpacks or purses which a thief might think contains a wallet or money.
never leave valuables in a car on the seats. at worst, they go in the trunk which cant be "smashed" in.
uh, some people try and get to the trunk through the back seats, utterly destroying your car.
sorry, the point is even moreso, they won't try to take what they dont know is there
i dunno...I was reading Sarah Lane's blog. They assumed because her trunk was locked and couldnt be opened from the driver's seat, she must have had something important inside.

It is a good point that locking the trunk latch or the glovebox will inspire hooliganism.
However it is a much more useful point that if you don't leave anything AT ALL in view that looks stealable they'll probably hit someone else cars. By AT ALL I mean nothing that didn't come with the car when you purchased it should be visible from the outside.
Friends of mine parked in a hotel parking lot in the basement when we were there. When we checked out and needed to leave the place, we parked in the convention parking lot.
Next time when you park, consider the convention or hotel parking lots or parking lots of any buildings around it. A little more safer even though it might cost you tens of dollars.
