Tiger Woods 08 - Wii impressions?

edited August 2007 in Games and Technology
So I picked up Tiger Woods 08 last night. When I got home IGN had just posted their review (http://wii.ign.com/articles/816/816464p1.html) - a 7.1. Now I don't usually buy games based on reviews, however this one is particular is holding me back from pulling the trigger on this game.

Tiger is currently still unopened at the bottom of my briefcase and I'm contemplating taking it back. There are two issues at play: One, I want a golf game for my Wii (I haven't played 07 or Super Swing Golf). Two, I don't want some half-assed EA update, if that is all 08 is.

Help! Am I better off waiting a year for 09, or should I bite the bullet on 08?

I hear it pretty much is a half assed update, but if you didn't play 07 anyways, that shouldn't matter. I'm thinking about getting this myself, probably in the inevitable Wii game drought of '08.

You seriously think there's gonna be a drought?

Anyway, I loved 07, and was interested in 08 for online play, but after trying to play online with Madden, EA kind of lost my respect, in that regard. If they haven't made any significant improvements over last year, I still need to finish 07, anyway.

Does 08 still look like ass on a HDTV?

Another question I don't want to start a new thread for, anyone know how the PS3 version runs?

The fact that you can't play online is disappointing, especially since EA did it with the new Madden. Lame. The DS version can be played online so I'm getting that one instead.

I am holding out for the inevitable Mario Golf for the Wii. I know it isn't official yet, but has there been a better golf game then Mario Golf on the 64? I think not.

Toadstool Tour was pretty good, was the 64 one even better?

Damn straight, Camelot made Mario Golf so that could be the equivalent title we are looking for.

@jothki: Mario Golf is the only reason we still break out the N64 every once in awhile, the paradigm of console golfing heh.

While not quite on topic here, it seems that Tiger Woods DS got a good review. Might be interested in that now. Portable golf would probably be better than console golf me thinks.

I really don't understand how a pack-in launch title can get the Wii golf swing mechanics down better than anyone else has a year later.

Man, I hate Wii Sports Golf, but I really like Tiger 07. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I'd agree with you if not for the Wii. If it was a choice between analog and touchpad swing I think the DS would win out for me, however the promise of swinging the wiimote is just too much.

I'm slowly moving closer to keeping it, merely due to the fact that I don't expect to see a golf game that will challenge it in the near future. While Wii Love Golf was just announced for Japan, I think I'd wait for that over Super Swing Golf 2.

So anyone care to share their impressions, or are we too busy with MP3?:P

I'm considering getting this game. I've read the CCC review, the Game Informer review, and the IGN review.

They all essentially say that the swing mechanic works pretty well and is definitely better than last year. Some of the reviewers are annoyed that it is more difficult to get the exact fades and draws on the ball compared to the 360/PS3 version, however I kind of like the idea of having a little less perfect ability to predict a hard shot, since, I can't imagine perfectly nailing a fade or draw in actual golf.

Anyway, it's basically Tiger 07 with a better swing mechanic. If you're like me, you wanted Tiger07, but were willing to wait 5 months for Tiger08 if they improved the swing mechanic. They have.. so that's why I'm seriously considering getting it.

However.. there's also a lot of other games coming out now and throughout this year and early next year that I would rather spend money on. I think I can wait. Super Swing 2 is coming out and apparently a Camelot golf game. I might just wait on those... we'll see.

For now, I'm consuming all of my time with Prime 3, which is one of the best games I've played in a long time.

Thanks slash000 - this is very helpful. I too thought waiting the 5 months for 08 would pay-off, but I was expecting more than tweaks to the swing mechanic. And I can't agree more about the coming onslaught of titles (I picked up MP3 yesterday as well, and can't wait to get into it, so I'm not concerned about having nothing to play). With everything else that is coming out it is hard to justify keeping it since it's not a "AAA" title.

That game informer review is one of the worst reviews I've ever read.
    There review in short:

Obviously it's not as good as the Xbox 360 version as that is prettier and on-line, and on-line is awesome. This is despite the fact that in one version of the game you fiddle with a joypad and in one you pretend to play fucking golf. Infact lets not mention how different that makes the game at all and just complain that it makes it harder and we do better with buttons than swinging. Like one would expect.

Surely a golfer would be better reviewing it? I'm really starting to believe that the current crop of game reviewers are not qualified to review Wii games.

    Geez.

Still unless I find it cheap I think I'll wait for a Nintendo/Camelot version of Golf.

While we're talking about golf, I'm enjoying WiiSports golf a lot, but the swing detection kinda hurts the feel of the game. It detects small swings and differences well, but putting is like rolling dice sometimes and if I were to swing like I would in real life, I would always max out the bar.

Do any of the golf games (I'm particularly interested in the more "animated" ones, but Tiger is fine too) so far improve on this so I can swing like I would normally and it would actually detect if I want full strength or overkill or 3/4 strength? Or a putting system that doesn't require a slight tap that sometimes is picked up and other times not and sometimes just straight out maxes your swing strength?

Putting is the real killer to me in WiiSports golf. The others I can deal with, but putting I just haven't got the hang of yet.

well, I haven't played either of the tiger woods games on the wii, but if they're similar to WiiSports golf, then it's a good thing you used the word "pretending" because it feels just as fake as smashing buttons. And a lot less responsive.

Tiger Woods 08 is definitely almost a must have if you didn't play 07. The mechanics are much better in '08, and the UI got fixed, too. It might not be worth it, if you have 07, as the main game hasn't changed much and there isn't much in the way of new courses.

I d'no, man. I feel like I'm more attached to the game when I actually swing. I mean, I don't intentionally try to swing wrong in Wii Golf whether I have to or not; I enjoy recreating my own actual personal golf swing, and I like how it brings about a result in a game; even though I could get away with not swinging properly.

And because of that, I actually prefer that the accelerometers in the controller determine my 'club head speed' and my 'fade/draw' or 'slice/hook' because, even if I don't have 100 percent accurate control over it the way I might with a game pad, I indeed do not have 100 percent control over it in real golf.

But at least by letting a passive detection by accelerometers on an actual, physical swing determine my slice/hook and pitch/fade and 'club head speed' rather than by my button-press input, I feel like the results of my shots are more of a result of my swing itself rather than by calculated, predetermined button presses. And that makes it a lot more compelling for me in a golf game. I hope that makes sense.

    EDIT:

Wii Love Golf looks great; that's coming out in 08, eh? I think I'll wait for that. Unless I can find Tiger 08 for really, really cheap.

Anyone have any impressions on the 360/PS3? I downloaded the demo last night on the PS3 and it seemed like it was a lot of fun.

If you were buying a version of the game which one would you get? Wii, 360, or PS3?

The problem with tigers woods for other consoles is it was always too easy, after playing a bit you could hit nearly any shot with ease. I hear that is fixed in the new versions with less of a precise aiming dot and more of a general area aiming circle... but I would imagine they still get incredibly easy and unchallenging after a while. Then again, perfecting a swing on the Wii might be too damn hard, so I'd pick what you prefer: a game that you want to beat and unlock everything, or a potentially very challenging game you will keep coming back to.

Any more reviews besides IGN seems basing from the IGN review, EA really dropped the ball with TW08 as they did with Madden 08 for the Wii.

Are they actually trying to fail with the Wii crowds or something? Their ineptitude with the Wii is really baffling at this point.

How did they drop the ball with Madden 08?

They improved everything, including the controls, gave it more modes and 'extra' games, and it can be played online.

The only thing they really still need to do is upgrade either the engine or the assets. But it's hardly a bad game as it is right now, especially considering that it was already a good game to begin with from 07.

Is it worth $50 if you have 07? Questionable. But if you were waiting for 08 for the extra modes, online mp, and fine tuned controls, then I hardly see this as dropping the ball with the game.
