It's far from a Wiimote ripoff controller, but Sony has unveiled its strategy for capturing casual gamer dollars this holiday season. This November, it will launch a white-colored PlayStation 2 system bundled with its popular SingStar Pop karaoke software.

Retailing for $150, the bundle will include two microphones and the game software, everything players need to get up in front of their TV and start belting out pop hits like Sk8r Boi and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Well, not everything. You still have to buy the alcohol separately.

I think this is going to sell really well, even at $150. I think it's the best looking PS2 yet too.

It's funny. Sony is still doing stuff with two consoles, because their "primary" one is doing so bad.

Well, also because the PS2 was doing so good that it still has a lot of momentum left.

Kinda funny, I guess. It really shows how far they've fallen.

I don't see why this would sell, a new color and a singing game? I mean really sony.

Yeah, I bet they hate the Scrooge McDuck like piles of cash that the PS2 still makes them.

Yeah you're right. It's unfortunate that they have really fallen this far down.

Hm? I was just saying that this situation could only happen when both a) the PS2 did really well and b) the PS3 did really poorly.

Oh wait, I forgot, consoles are the new religions, and you can't say shit without it pissing somebody off.

The Scrooge McDuck piles of cash from the PS2 has been vacuumed into the moon-sized black hole created by the PS3.

Anyway, this is a good move and will likely sell, even if it dashes my faint hopes that the system would drop in price any time soon... my old one is crapping out and I need to replace it since the PS3's BC will be gimped by the time I get one.

I mentioned this elsewhere, but I have recently becoem infatuated with SingStar. I'm currently playing both Amped and 80s, and just cannot get enough. Plus I don't yet have a slim PS2, so this is practically bought already.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just drop the price to 100 dollars? It might not make as much money off of each on sold, but 100 dollars will probably increase sales much more than just a singing game that probably isn't that expensive.

If a console is still selling well, and has a massive install base, you support it. Doesn't really matter how well the PS3 is or isn't doing, that doesn't make the PS2 any less sellable. Indeed, that was the entire point of the PStwo, and the PSone, to sell a cheap console as an alternative to the next generation of systems.

I WOULD like to see it cheper, esp. since Pop will be quite old by November, and with two new versions releasing next month.

I think he's simply saying that they were expecting the PS3 to become the new PS2, but then it bombed compared to their expectations so they're relying on their old system, which is completely counter to all of their PS3 'True next gen' marketing techniques.

Also, at this point, I have to imagine that the bulk of the money they'll get out of the PS2 has already been had.

    Oh, it'll sell.

It's no coincidence that they've borrowed the Wii's color scheme; they'll get a lot of confused people picking up one of these instead.

What's more, we all know that Wiis are going to be extremely scarce this holiday season, and lots of people will find that $150 for a console with ten billion games available for it that comes with a crowd-pleaser like Singstar to be a more than suitable alternative.

But yeah, it's telling that Sony is still putting so much effort into the PS2.
