Keeping discs in your Wii: Good or Bad?

Ok, this has been bugging me for awhile.

I read somewhere, probably a manual or something, that you aren't supposed to keep your game disc inside the Wii when not in use.

My question is, does anyone do it anyway? Is there any harm? I'm thinking it might be a standard warning, and I've kept games in my other systems when not in use. But the Wii seems to get a little... hot. So rather than risk something happening to a game I can't afford to replace, I opt for taking it out each time.

Am I overreacting, worrying too much? Because it is kind of a nuisance, and if I can keep the game in there, I'd rather just do that. But if there's some risk to the disc or the system, well, too bad for me then.

I'd just like to know the truth.

...

Yes, I can handle the truth.

I keep discs in my Wii 100 percent of the time.

But I keep the WC24 "standby connection" turned off. (The wii still gets online automatically to check messages when I turn it on though)

Most of the time I keep the last played game in my Wii and I haven't noticed any problems with any of the games.

No, that's not an issue. You're probably thinking of leaving it in when you move the console, which on the 360 will fuck your disc. I don't think the Wii even has a problem with that.

now that we've reached the age where gaming has become the cost of an arm and a testicle, i dont believe that wanting to take near paranoid care of your hardware is out of the question. if you are frugal enough, i would take the game out each session.

I've had both GC and Wii discs in the drive for months, nothing bad has happened...

The only weirdness I've heard is keeping the wii on its side is bad for it while the disc is in and spinning, or something. I dont know if thats true or not, but its related.

I've always just kept my current game in the console. Never had a problem. The fact that this thread even exists is news to me.

    Uhhh, I dunno.

I remember noticing that discs seemed to feel warmer after being popped out after a week of wiiconnect idling than after actually playing... a DVD or CD is basically just two sheets of plastic glued together, I can totally see the plastic subtly warping or the glue being prematurely aged or otherwise stressed due to prolonged exposure.

Cause, y'know, I've had other devices make CDs or DVDs pretty warm to the touch but they're only exposed for however long the car ride is, or how long the CD is, or how long the movie is, etc. A week or month of constant exposure? Might not ultimately hurt but it suuure isn't doing any good.

I mean, I've seen CDs contorted into crazy shapes after an afternoon in the car, even though the wii-heat is way less intense even the slightest warping could cause the disc to spin all crazy and fuck shit up.

If the 'don't leave the disc in' thing is nintendo-official it's really just them covering their asses like the epilepsy warnings, doesn't mean some people haven't actually had seizures though, or thrown a wiimote through a screen or given someone a black eye flailing.

    My 2 cents I guess.

I've always taken them out (on Wii and 360 as well as older systems)

Now that I think about it, I guess I don't really need to. I dunno.

Just as much chance of you screwing up your discs outside of the console than inside... just take care when moving things around.

I had Super Paper Mario in for a month and no issues.

Don't leave discs in if you're moving your wii from house to house though, I forgot to take one out and upon plugging my Wii back in, the drive wouldn't read discs properly. It just sort of "clicked".

A bit of fiddling around (and opening the Wii up and fiddling around) and all was sorted.

I put a disc in my Wi and left it there for 2 days and it spat hot glass and used syringes at me when I next turned it on.

I leave games in the Wii unless I'm going to cart the system around. Then I remove it while transporting.

Yeah, I've always left my current game in whatever console I'm playing without any problem.

Also speaking of the Wii, horizontal or vertical? I haven't had any problems leaving the thing in the vertical stand, but I know the 360 doesn't play well if you stand it up (scratched discs and the fact that the only fucking air vents are on the bottom).

There really ought to be a general repository of this sort of information regarding consoles (and I suppose PCs too) to eliminate confusion.

I always leave discs in my Wii. There was a game in there when my cat jumped up and knocked my Wii onto the floor.

This was 2 days after I stood in line to buy it at launch.

    The Wii was in freefall.

    And then hit the floor.

Wii and disk - perfectly fine.

I had read the exact opposite elsewhere, and have my 360 vertical and freestanding from all other equipment in a desperate bid to avoid getting ringed. Any independent verification that its actually more heat-efficient to have the thing horizontally?

360 sucks air in through the part that is the bottom if you keep it verticle, so it is blocked if you have it that way.

I can verify PERSONALLY that some Gamecube games we're harmed in my Wii.

I left Resident Evil 4 disc 1, with 24 Connect on, in for a month. When I removed the disk the disc label was warped and chipped.

None of it entered the Wii and I did send Nintendo just a friendly FYI. I wasn't angry or anything it would make sence considering you wouldn't keep your old Gamecube on for over a month.

But I can only see this happening on games disc without laser labels.
