This party needs an encore: Resident Evil 4

So, a few days ago, I dug out ye olde 4 Resident Evil: Wagglium, and began to play on my first run through Pro.

...Jesus fuck, Pro is UNPLEASANT at times.

Now then, standard info for the game, copied from Wikipedia:
In 2004, six years after the events of Resident Evil 2 and 3, the Umbrella Corporation's secretive activities within Raccoon City have become a public affair. Following an investigation conducted by the U.S. government, several Umbrella officials are implicated and prosecuted. The government indefinitely suspends Umbrella's business, causing the company to become bankrupt.

The game's main protagonist is Leon S. Kennedy, one of the few survivors of the Raccoon City incident, who was recruited by the U.S. government to become a secret agent after they learned of his actions in Raccoon City. Leon is sent on a mission to rescue Ashley Graham, the President's daughter, who has been kidnapped by a mysterious cult. Leon travels to a Spanish-speaking village in Europe, where he encounters a horde of unruly villagers who pledge their lives to Los Illuminados, the cult that perpetrated Ashley's kidnapping.

Resident Evil 4's game mechanics have been completely redesigned to incorporate fast-paced gunplay, quick controls and shootouts involving massive crowds of enemies in large open areas. This, combined with an abundance of healing items and ammunition, results in a different gameplay experience from other Resident Evil games. Previous titles in the series have focused on exploration and conservation of ammunition. A typical play-through can result in the player killing upwards of 900 enemies.

So, short version, the president's daughter is kidnapped. You are a bad enough dude to save her. So bad, apparently, that they only needed to send you.

Alternatively, the president dislikes his daughter and you're just an unfortunate casualty in his attempt to get rid of her without being obviously negligent.

For extra fun, look at the Let's Play thread of the game:
http://fromearth.net/LetsPlay/RE4/

So, anyone else been playing this lately? I just started Chapter 5, myself. I am not looking forward to the you-know-whats. Not even a little.

I have completed RE4 on the Gamecube more times than I can possibly count.

I played through RE4 - Wii edition like 6 times in a row after it came out, first on normal, then on Pro.

I have absolutely unlocked everything, I can also complete it real fast (not speedrun fast, but without stopping, just cause I know the game inside out)

I can't wait to go back up to Uni (where my Wii is) and play it again.

    Shinji Mikami = <3
I hope they eventually make another RE game with the same control scheme (or even one where it's the same but you can move and shoot at the same time, there is no reason not to now, since the analogue stick isn't both aim and move)

Well, RE5 looks to use the same raw mechanics as RE4, just with the horrory aspects of normal Resident Evil spliced in.

And RE: Umbrella Chronicles has pretty good wii-aiming, though it's a total lightgun game(hardly any control of where you're facing and such). Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on your opinion of lightgun games.

Also, any tips on how to get past
    regenerators and iron maidens?
I've got a minethrower, a Broken Butterfly, a Red9, a Striker, and a TMP to work with, but I could scrounge up enough to get a rifle before the encounter. I'd prefer to avoid using one, though, what with the lack of waggly aim.

oh, I meant to say, I recently picked up two (count em) of the RE4 Chainsaw controllers for the PS2.

    £4.99 each at Amazon
    http://savygamer.blogspot.com/2007/08/re4-chainsaw-controller-ps2-499.html

Mine also came with a PS2 USB controller converter (it said limited edition, but I don't know, maybe all do), which is awesome because I was looking at paying £3 for one of those on their own!

I have one to play with, and one to keep sealed forever and ever.

    Ah Resident Evil 4...

I don't know how much time I spent on that

So many god damn zombies coming out of every crevice... I think I actually got through that part with sheer luck last time.

I still laugh at the Dam area with the boxes across the water, and the zombies try to cross. One pistol round = watersoaked zombie. Good times.

    Yeah, ya did.
The freezer, where you swap that keycard. You can turn up the temperature and de-freeze an infrared scope. Grab it, combine with a rifle, the regenerator in the room wakes up, shoot it dead.

I'm trying to find a method other than that at the moment. Considering pumping one full of minethrower darts.

Secondary plan: Quit here, grab someone else's Pro clear file, discard everything but the PLR, call it a day.

Oh arse. I turned the temperature up, couldn't find the defrosted item and high-tailed it out of there as soon as I heard the heavy breathing.

Guess I'll just have to keep stocked up on rocket launchers and grenades.

You go up against maybe a dozen of the things total, and all but...I guess maybe two or three can just be dodged.

...Really, it's not the wisest tactic in the world, but there isn't a huge amount stopping you from just grabbing a rocket launcher and using it against the one mandatory encounter I can think of.

    That's basically how I fought
the two iron maidens at the bottom of the trash shoot. Just lined them both up and rocket'd.

The 2 in the corridor that lead to the bulldozer sequence were dealt with by grenading.. The rest I'm just going to high-tail it past and not look back.

Actually, the minethrower's damage is different. It does the same actual damage no matter how high that rating is(I think it's the same as a 'nade, but I could be wrong), and the 'damage' rating shows how far the explosion goes. So a minethrower at 6.0 damage will hit a target from three times the distance of a 2.0 minethrower.

Now, whether this is useful or not to you depends entirely on where you use the minethrower.

I want to love RE4 but its making it very hard but I hope you people might be good enough to help me.

Basically I have the PC version (I thought the best £20 Id ever spend) but soon found out why it was so cheap. I can get past the dodgy control scheme on the keyboard (although it is mildly crippling) and I can look beyond the washed out graphics and lighting BUT I cannot abide by the, what amounts to, missing cut scenes. Whenever the game triggers any cut scene, interactive or not, all I get is the camera floating round the level where I assume people are supposed to be in complete silence, ruins the immersion and I also have no idea what’s going on in the story.

Now I know there was a PC patch and I installed it, it didn’t change the graphics at all and the cut scenes now became just a black screen occasionally telling me to hit some buttons assumedly to dodge something.

I so hope someone out there can point me in the direction of a fix so I can appreciate this game and yes I’m well aware I probably should have got a console copy but all I have is a 360.

    Thanks in advance

I don't think that anything can be done to make the PC version more technically competant, but you should consider the chainsaw controller + USB adapter I linked on the previous page, I was playing the Linux port of geometry wars with a PS2 controller and it was great.
