The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I ventured into a nearby branch of a well-known Dutch chain of toystores the other day. Now, I knew the guy who is in charge of the videogame section here had a widespread network of... resources. I mean I bought some long out of print and by now quite hard to come by Gamecube titles from him a few months ago, and he even had an Xbox (not the 360) component cable the other day. Which I of course bought. Not even Hong Kong has those anymore! I know this guy can get me pretty much everything I want at reasonable prices. I plan to ask him for a Dreamcast VGA or component cable next time.
But what I found there this time literally shocked me. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
And the same Rezzes from a different angle:
In addition, he had two copies of Frequency and one copy of Amplitude. Not all that rare but I still bought them all. Of course I already owned one of each of those games but you can never have too many Rezzes...
The grand total for seven games: almost $100,00. I think I done good.
So, what are your best bargains, and how did you find them?
My best deals are usually used games from Value Village. They don't often have used games in, but when they do they don't know how to price them. e.g. Castlevania I, II, and III, Ninja Gaiden II, Dragon Warrior for $3 each? Sega Genesis for $6? Yes, please! I've got retro games there for up to 1/25th the price a knowledgeable store would sell them for
I generally just keep my eyes open and occasionally go to less-frequently traveled stores. For instance, we used to have a wal-mart here that had probably been open since 1985 or so, and it never got anywhere near as much business as the super wal-mart across town. I remember them having Mario Kart Gamecube bundles something like two years after they had sold out everywhere else.
Odds 'n Ends I have found, though:
A used copy of Alundra (PS1) at a Gamestop for $15 that was in brand-new condition (one of the local stores wants $40 for the same game in much worse condition).
Lots of clearance games from Target, including Odama for $13, Hitman: Blood Money (PC) for $7.50, Meteos for $15, etc.
When the Gamecrazy opened up in town, they brought in a bunch of good stuff from other stores. I scored a used SNES in fantastic condition with two controllers and a few games (including Super Punch-Out) for ~$40.
I know most people despise EBstop but I've always had great luck going into the local ones with about $20 and coming out with something worth at least that. I would never dream of trading in any of my games to them for a quarter, but I'm glad that someone does it. I'd like to send a thank-you card to whoever traded in their copy of Winback for the PS2 so that I could buy it for $4. Or whoever let me get Samurai Western for $5 or Mark of Kri for $5 or Legia 2 for $10. The list goes on, but it's thanks to whoever trades in games that I have over 50 PS2 games and 30 GCN games. I can count the number of games I bothered to purchase at full price on both hands for the last generations and I still have a metric shitton of games I haven't even gotten around to playing yet.
I bought about 16 copies of Sprung for the DS for 97p each at dixons clearance. Then I went on to trade them in at gamestation and got a DS lite + NSMB.
Also, I got about 15 good Xbox games from Virgin Megastore clearance (Fable, Forza, PGR2, Jade Empire, Conker) I got 2 of each one, and gave them away to (very happy) friends. Did a similar thing with Morrisons when they did the same, ended up with about 4 copies of Psyconauts and some other good games, gave most duplicates away too.
Other than that, recently, I just got 2x RE4 chainsaw controllers for £5 each, one to use and one to display.

You forgot the UK part, not that bloke isn't a good enough idea. Still, you are a hero for that Sprung thing.
Pawn shops are the greatest places to go looking for bargains. Often they don't have any real idea of the rarity or value of games or hardware that they're taking in, so they tend to just price them all the same.
I've picked up a couple of games that are relatively difficult to find for cheap.
Er, Rez got reprinted, it isn't rare at all anymore.
Weren't the reprints of the NTSC version? I think PAL Rez is still pretty rare, and looking at those photos, I think those are PAL (judging by the ELSPA logo).
Garage Sales! I got a saturn and a bunch of games for a good price. Sold them to someone on this site, and I included the Nights into Dreams X-mas demodisc just as a freebie. I think I read somewhere later that it was actually worth something. Oops!
Well nothing really rare but Gogamer is always having some sort of 48 hour sale. I think I paid about $5 for Fable (pc) just recently.
Our local Circuit City still has some gamecube games for example where as everywhere else has cleared out their stock. Pretty much 0 Gamecube games at walmart/gamestop/best buy/etc.. now. At least none of the good ones.
Most of the really good bargains I've found (price wise) have been online. Rarely do I run into a good price locally. Don't even consider buying HD-DVD's or Blu-Ray discs here as the same titles will cost you $10-15 less on amazon.

Know someone who works in retail. When they clearance out old games, they don't play.
I can think of a dozen 360 games selling for ~$15 right at Kmart right now.
Picked up a copy of Snatcher for Sega CD from a Kay-Bee Toys for 14.97 new a few years back. They were clearing out old, old stock. I know the price well, because I have left the original price tag on it to remind me.
I'm sure if I left it sealed it would be worth more than money than I've made in my entire life, but I chose to play it and enjoy it.
Now if only my Sega CD's battery back-up weren't dead.

PAL Rez is not that rare either.
I frequently run across copies.
ZOE2, Kuon and (especially) Space Channel 5 part 2 are much scarcer.
I once got a N64, 4 controllers, LoZ: OoT, Super Mario 64, and Super Smash Bros. for $5 at a yard sale.
That kid must've been pissed. (I also got Pokemon Stadium and Hey You! Pikachu, but both got water damaged.)
I found near-mint copies of both Tomba! and Warhawk for PS1 the other day for $15 bucks total. I was happy. The guy also had a copy of Galerians, PS1 as well, but I didn't remember being too fond of that game.

I got a used but mint copy of the original Silent Hill non greatest hits for 2 bucks.
I scored Phantasy Star III and Shining in the Darkness for $5 a piece at an indy record/game store a little over a month ago. I saw them and did a double take.
Each is in it's original box and they both have their manuals. PSIII has it's warrantee cards and the poster as well. They have some ridiculous deals there from time to time. Scored an original Xbox memory card for $4 the same day, and a Dreamcast 4X Memory Card and Puru Puru for the same price.
Native res is 1920 X 1200, which is equivalent to 1080p on an HDTV. It also has component, composite, S-Video, HDMI and built-in speakers, which make it a good compliment for any console out there.
This only lasts until the end of labour day, and then the price goes back up to $800
I have scored so much awesome shit at garage sells it's crazy.
Like today for instance. I pick up a 3DO with one controller, one light gun, two 3D0 tip books, and 46 games. 46 fucking games. For 10 bucks. I know, I know...the 3DO is shit. But I'll make a good penny on eBay. And now I know for myself how shitty it really is. Doom is fucking terrible on this thing. It gets bad frames! Doom for gods sake!
But I think later I will try out Night Trap....I have heard sooo much...

I didn't even think 3DO had that many games. Still, Star Control II on it was pretty awesome, but of course you can download Ur-Quan Masters now for free, making that a little moot.
I got EarthBound for about $17 (the same place later had Donkey Kong Country, Chrono Trigger, and a few others, but one of the employees bought them the second they came in). I could have gotten Lufia 2 for $5 (with the box and all the papers) but somebody else had snatched it.
I snagged Team Buddies for $10, Project Justice for $9, and ZoE2 for $15. I got CoH for $20 when it was still selling for $50 around Christmas. I bought Ogre Battle 64 for $20 but I ended up trading it. I found Kirby's Dream Course for $7 but the battery save didn't work. I got Saturn Bomberman for about $5 but I passed on Guardian Heroes for some reason.
Most of the time I either crawl through ebay or visit small-time gametraders in my city. Managed to source MGS3 : S for only AU$45. Sold it on eBay for a cool $142
Picked up Eternal Darkness on the GCN for only $18 imported from the UK aswell.

I sold them all for at least that much. Except for the two I kept. Awesome system.

I sold it to a mate at a fair price (not my cup of tea)
Best deal ever.
i guess those are bargains

Star Control II is fucking godly. Keep the 3do for that game at least, dude.
Besides, a 3do will make a good addition to a Room of Doom picture for some future e-peen thread.
