[LTTP] Final Fantasy Tactics Advance

edited September 2007 in Games and Technology
From wiki:

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (ファイナルファンタジータクティクスアドバンス, Fainaru Fantajī Takutikusu Adobansu?) is a tactical role-playing game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. A spin-off to the popular Final Fantasy series, the game shares several traits with 1997's Final Fantasy Tactics, though it is not a sequel. The player assembles a clan of individual characters, and controls their actions over grid-like battlefields. Players are mostly free to decide the classes, abilities and statistics of their characters.

The game's story centers on four children — Marche, Mewt, Ritz, and Doned — who live in a small town named St. Ivalice. The children are transported to a realm of the same name as their town, "Ivalice," after discovering an ancient magical book. This magical realm of Ivalice appears to be Mewt's manifestation of the video game "Final Fantasy," which he had played.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is one of the initial products from the cooperation of Square and Nintendo made for the Game Boy Advance console; it was developed by the team brought over from the game company Quest Corporation. Following its release, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance-themed merchandise was introduced. The game was positively received globally.

From Penny-Arcade:

20030922h.gif

From me:

This game is, without a doubt, one of the best portable games ever, and one of the most skull-crushingly balls-punchingly addictive games made.

I love this game so much

Despite the fact I accidentally saved over my near-completed file (twice)

You know, I never actually finished it.

Should I throw productivity to the wind and start a new game?

I was planning on playing FFXII as well during the school holidays in 2 weeks (Australia).

    I could O.D on Ivalice.

I am eagerly awaiting FFTA2, although it might be a while. The game hasn't released yet in Japan (Oct 25), so I imagine it'll be mid-2008 before it comes over stateside. (More info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_Tactics_A2_F%C5%ABketsu_no_Grimoire)

I lost soooo many hours to this game. It could become so easy with the right skills but I still couldn't stop playing.

The whole being able to throw away items vital for 100% mission completion thing kinda sucked though.

Massively looking forward to the upcoming DS sequel.

I figured maybe I just sucked at FFT, but I knew I just sucked at SRPG's altogether when I was losing in a game that had a snowball fight as its introductory level.

I played it and finished it once. But every time I try to replay it, I get frustrated by how slow everything goes or how utterly generic all my units are (save for 2). Fire Emblem spoiled me in that particular regard.

Fun game, I guess, but not great.

    It needed more Ritz.

It did need more Ritz. She was by far the most interesting character out there, even if her big painful secret was kind of lame.

But every time I try to replay it, I get frustrated by how slow everything goes[...]
This was my greatest issue with the game. There is no good reason why watching a single enemy unit take their turn should suck up ten seconds, or more. Camera shifts to enemy unit, pause for a second, show enemy movement range, pause for a second, enemy walks to destination, stop for a second, wait a little longer (for reasons unknown), inordinately long spellcasting animation, wait. Oh, hey, I have to sit through another two of those before I can do so much as touch the controls. I'll be in my room, GBA; call me when you're done.

Fire Emblem did spoil me; single units take two or three seconds to make their moves, and control is back in the hands of the player within thirty seconds, even on large maps.

I agree with this and add in the terribly generic and boring storyline and you end up with a meh game that wasn't worth playing.

I enjoy the game a lot, but for some reason whenever I try to play it again, I can't play through the snowball fight. I just get bored.

I love everything past it, but it's just a title I can't get back into. :(

I don't outright hate FFTA, and I certainly enjoyed a portion of my playing experience, it just seemed like a step away from what I want in most ways. There were a number of things I simply did not like--mainly the setting/characters and the small gimmicks they added. I could have dealt with the skill weapon thing if it weren't for the other things too.

The skills coming from weapons was alright... much like FFIX.

However, some of the weapons being hidden away in obscure combinations of land placement was horseshit.

I enjoyed it, I think, but some of the laws screwed me. Especially near the end when you'd get three per battle. They'd frequently make impossible situations like not being able to damage monsters but needing to kill them, or preventing the use of weapons.

It was a neat idea that just got out of hand, I think.

You would eventually get the weapos normally (as far as I recall), the combinations would just allow you to get some weapons sooner. Sort of a bonus for the enthusiast. They allowed you to grab high-level skills before you'd normally have them.

Personally, I loved the story. Mainly because, the way I saw it, you were destroying the world. You know that big, bad, rich villain who goes around killing the <x> sacred guardians to steal their power/loot/miscellaneous stuff in order to destroy the world? That was you :p.

Someone better fucking post that motivational poster. Or else.

I love the Judges. I love the stupid restrictions, the unbalanced classes. I love how pretty much useless the Banga really were, I love how the seemingly useless Moogle classes worked so well together, I love that the game rewards proper item hoarding, and punishes people for throwing away something that they think is repeatable but is actually not. I love finally completing all the stupid ass quests and beating people to death while forgiving penalties with ye olde Judge Master Drunkee Mcbeatdeadwife.

I love FFTA. Fuck Ramza and his bitching. Fuck evil churches, sealed demons, dead gods, whatever the fuck. If I want that, I'd play Tactics Ogre/Ogre Battle 64. Blame yourself or god for not bowing to the true pimp of the series, FFT:A.

Having your main party based on the party from Final Fantasy IV was the right way to play the game. It was the right way to play the original tactics game two but there wasn't a good way to have a paladin type character.

But Knights suck :(. I kind of wanted my Paladin to be Ramza because well he's the main character but it's such a waste. I usually end up use that other special character (forget his name) as the Paladin (forget his real class too).

What's with that giant sword though? Nothing like that is in the game. Weird.

The story for tactics needed some serious work. Honestly, Marche's whole motivation for wrecking the world was as ambiguous and nonsensial as fuck.

Also fuck the judges. And fuck how easy it was to utterly fuck up this game with a thief. Seriously, steal XP=retarded leveling rate.

I loved the sheer amount of weapons and armor.

I also liked the fact alot of the good stuff in the game had to be stolen. It was good to be rewarded for taking the time to thieve.
