Oh my god oh my god oh my godThe original Ghost Recon has recently been re-released by UbiSoft for free.http://www.gamershell.com/download_20866.shtml
You may go there to download it. (500 megs)
If you have not played Ghost Recon before.
You need to at least play the singe player version. Ghost Recon has zero in common with the new ghost recons that have been coming out for the consoles and being subsequently ported to the PC.
Ghost Recon is one of the finest realism shooters that has ever been released. The year is 2008, political destabilization in the Eastern Europe/North Middle East has caused the U.N. to send in troops to clean up the mess. You play as an elite squad of soldiers known as Ghost Recon. You get in, you kill people, and you get out without anybody knowing you were there.
If you need a comparison, Ghost Recon is a polished version of the original Rainbow Six, except most missions take place outdoors in very large areas such as hillsides or war-torn villages. The damage rules fall in line with that of the older Rainbow Six games a la if you are shot, odds are you are dead.
That is what makes it good.
The AI is aggressive and surprisingly competent, and will kick your ass a lot. They don't just wait around for you to kill them like in Rainbow Six. In Ghost Recon, if the enemy knows you are out there, they will hunt you down, and the results can often be hilariously painful for you. The primary difference between Ghost Recon and Rainbow Six in terms of Gameplay is that
1) You do not get to plan your mission route before you start. It's all on the fly, in response to enemy movement.
2) You don't get a large array of weapons. Technically you are part of the U.N. You get what they have to offer.
3) You have a smaller squad. Up to 6 people configurable in three teams.
4) You can set waypoints once you are in your mission, and tell teams to execute them. This gives you much better AI squad support than in Rainbow 6, and prevents you from having to manually advance each of your squads yourself.
I would like to maybe set an online play
Ghost Recon has an excellent Co-op multiplayer system that lets folks take on either campaign missions or skirmish missions as a team. My personal favorite is Recon mode on elite.
In Recon mode you must basically cross an entire map without anyone being killed. It is very challenging and if you can get 6 people to work as a group and survive it, it's definitely rewarding.
This would probably happen either Tuesday or Friday night between 6 and 9PM Eastern. It is best played with at least three people, through 4-6 is preferable. We will use PA vent.
If anyone has their firewall set up to be nice to hosting, that would be great, if not, I can probably strangle mine until it let's me host.
Post interest and availability here.
this is a discord of mostly PA people interested in fighting games:

Dunno if mods even work with the ad-supported version, though.
To be honest I haven't even noticed an advertisement yet, after two missions.
