Streets of Rage 2: Let go you homp

In every game of Streets of Rage 2 I'v had to explain the freaking controls and all the fighting moves to every single person who plays co-op with me on Xbox Live Arcade because the explaination of the controls on the XBLA suck donkey dong. Here is a god-damn SoR2 masterclass you homps can read so you all don't suck ass. The basic controls, I'll just do Axel for now as I'm running a little low on time, I'll update the thread with the rest of the characters later if there is enough interest. B can also be replaced with X

AXEL

B = Punch

BB = One two punch

BBB = Three punches

BBBB = Three punches and a kick to knock down the enemy

Hold B for a second and release = Double kick

Forward forward B = Grand upper. Mega damage but has a bit of recovery time when you end the move, enough for the enemy to grab or attack you.

B and A = Backhand, hits the enemy twice, handy as the enemies love to sneak up on you. If holding a weapon, throws it

Y = Whirling Dragon punch, completley invincible while using it, and, as long as you don't hit anything with it, you don't lose stamina when you perform it. Use it regularly in these situations-

-Enemies are punching you from both sides and you are locked in a stun animation
-If a whip/knife/weapon is flying in your direction
-Whenever an enemy grabs you hammer Y like a madman until they rlease, especially if a biker grabs you from behind. If this happens, they will instantly punch you so you can always hit them first after they let go if you keep hitting Y
-Basically, if you are about to get hit, you may as well lose a bit of health anyway and knock over the enemy

Any direction and Y = Punch rush combo. A nice little attack if you are in a hurry. Grab a guy, knee him in the head twice and pull this off to do a nice bit of damage. You lose health every time you do it, regardless of if you are hitting anything with it. You are screwed if more then one enemy is onscren and you use this attack, so just hammer Y if you get caught off guard using this. If hammering Y, you should dragon punch any enemy who hits you while you are locked in this move

A = Jump

B while jumping = Snap kick that hits the enemy twice and knocks them over

B while jumping and moving = Flying kick that knocks over enemies

B and down while jumping = Knee drop, this has a shorter range but stuns the enemy, allowing you to grab them easier when you land

Towards an enemy = Grab

Grab and B = Headbut. Looks classy and knocks over enemy

Grab direction and B = Knee to head

Grab direction and BB = 2 knees to head

Grab direction and BBB = 4 knees to the head and knocks over the enemy

Grab, press away from enemy and B = Throw

Grab and A = Flip over enemy

B when grabbing enemy from behind = Body slam, massive damage. Knee a guy in the head twice, flip over him and body slam him for great damage

- Play as Axel if you want to win. Each character is great his his grand upper us way too useful for nearly every boss. Max is a close second as his sheer brute force can keep most enemies down if you can just grab them and lay down the hurt. Try to grab them from behind, then jump and press the attack button mid-air to do a massive spine breaker move. If you grab them from the front, press a direction, attack twice, then, if no-one is around, hit the attack button to start a neck snapping combo, if enemies are around, jump in the air while holding them and throw them to the ground with the attack button

- IF YOU GET THROWN, HOLD UP AND JUMP AND YOU WILL LAND ON YOUR MOTHERFUCKING FEET WHY DOES THE GAME FUCKING NOT TELL PEOPLE THIS GOOD GOOD. Ugh, sorry but I'm sick of telling people this.

- If you accidentally grab your partner, use your throw move on them and tell them to land it. If the grabber is Max, just jump in the air with them and they should be released when you land. With Skates, flip over your partner and hurl them with a tap of the B button to throw them.

- PUNCH LOCK - Tab B at regular intervals to keep an enemy indefinatley locked in a stun animation. This may seem 'cheap' but you hardly can rely on it to beat hardest/mania mode. There will be plenty of time to get fancy later, just cheese the enemy like this when you can

- Try to keep bosses locked in a grand upper lock, keep timing your grand uppers so every time they get up they get hit and are knocked over. Use the grand upper to counter moves such as the wrestler's charge/body slam or the boxer's butt drop. If you can beat mania mode the 'honest' way I tip my hat to you good sir

- If you are holding a weapon and have an enemy up in your face, don't try to wang them in the head with the weapon, hit B and A together to instantly throw the weapon at them. There is no 'charge time' for throwing your weapon so instead of getting hammered with punches in the half a second it takes to swing a weapon, throw it instantly at them to knock them away

- Try to lure the enemies into sneaking up behind you, they love to run fast at you if you have your back to them so hit B and A together to backhand them for a good bit of damage and to knock them down

- Most importantly, try not to stay on the same level as the bad guys. Stay slightly above them at all times if you can, pushing towards them diagonally/downwards and towards them to grab them

- In places like the lift on level 7, the important thing is not to do damage, but to just keep the enemy on the floor, concentrate on throwing enemies into each other and grand uppering them when you can

- If you see a punk about to slide at you, stand still, jump in the air and snap kick him when he lands. If there are two, grand upper him, if there are three, try to change height levels, you will be very lucky to hit 3 at once with a single grand upper.

Right, that's all I'v got time for for now. That should help some people out a bit. I'm not going to bother with a massive, character by character, stage by stage, boss by boss guide unless you guys seriously want one. Fuck spellchecking this either. Now go and kick some ass and land on your freaking feet for once when you get thrown you idiots.

    If people don't know how to play Streets of Rage 2, then they must have had ever so deprived childhoods.

    Axel's grand upper is so ridiculously powerfull, it rapes pretty much everything in the game.

    Skate was a proto-Eddie Gordo. His breakdancing spin move had no cool down frames, and he was invincible while spinning, so when you played multiplayer arena battles no other character could land a hit. Cheap, cheap bastard.

    I was entirely unaware this was out now. Bioshock is pwning my time.

    Anyway, why are you playing with randoms on Live? Streets of Rage can only be played co-op with your friend in the same room, so you can punch them when they fuck up.

    My girlfriend doesn't like the punching so much.

    My friends and I used to play Streets of Rage II in the "youth room" every Sunday after church.

    At the time, the irony escaped me.

    Mastering Streets of Rage 2, heh. Compared to part 3, the controls can feel clunky. But it's still fun as hell. One of the best soundtracks in gaming history here, by the way.

    I've been playing SoR2 since ages, but I can never ever remember the up+jump to land when thrown. It's just not in my system. Hotlead, do you have the 800k achievement and if so how in the name of fuck did you do it?

    Go and stand in the corner and don't come back until you feel the appropriate amount of shame for this.

    And that is a lot of shame.

    A LOT.

    Savestates. Use them.

    Protip: If you break 1 million, your score loops back over to zero, and the XBLA leaderboards don't account for this glitch. Trying to get as close as possible to 999990 is tricky.

    I'm content just to beat mania mode and Hardcore co-op for now. Not attempted that achivement but I'd assume you should just put the game on the hardest setting you can handle, find out what moves gove you the most points and spam them, trying to finish the level as quickly as possib.e

    You have to set the game to "Hardcore" settings to get that achievement. Hardest difficulty (as in "Hardest," not "Mania") and 1 life per credit.

    You should be able to pass the 800k mark by the end of stage 7.

    is grand upper the move where he touches the ground as he does an upper cut? I thought that was called bare knuckle.

    It's called both.

    He yells "Grand Upper" in SoR2 and "Bare Knuckle" in SoR3 :)

    As kids we always liked to think he yelled "what-the-fark!" instead of "grand-up-pah!"

    Ah memories...

    We used to play on Mania. My friend would always be dead and out of credits by level 7 or early Level 8. Always used to have to fight Mr. X on my own :/
