I was thinking of looking for a free MMO and stumbled across Archlord. Has anyone tried this one? It's free to play but appears to have some sort of microtransaction scheme in place ... this page here scared me abit.
I'm also interested in a any FPS MMO currently out there aside from Planetside which I played to death.
10six (now Project Visitor) is one of the few other MMOFPS games that comes to mind, and I have to keep on posting it because it comes to nobody else's. I don't play it myself, and from what I hear it's a bit deserted, but there it is. It's sort of a hybrid MMOFPS/RTS. Ahead of its time, perhaps, being released in 2000.

Let's expound on Archlord a little bit and why you, or any sane human being, shouldn't play it.
The graphics, for one, are generic, and when they're not generic, they're simply terrible. The voice acting and dialogue are so horrifying that it's almost a dark, wicked miracle. You'll have no idea how they got a collection of school teachers and eight year-olds to read rejected lines from the original Disgaea script, but the malevolent developers of Archlord somehow managed to do it.
The gameplay is, to be blunt, like executing your penis with an electric chair. It transcends the usual grind and becomes something so boring that it basically boils down to some of the most basic of human functions -- moving your fingers and wanting the suffering to end. I remember the music being okay, with one song in particular that I wanted to download and keep, but it wasn't worth the harrowing experience of being exposed to one of the absolute worst MMOs I've played since Runescape.
If anyone thinks that I'm exaggerating, go right ahead and play. Just be prepared to shell out real cash for high-end items, a system which could only originate from the blood-rusted corridors of the Event Horizon itself. In the grand scheme of things, Archlord didn't have a single redeeming quality, and even though I'm typically pretty indifferent if someone likes something that I don't, or vice-versa, I honestly cannot possibly wrap my brain around the fact that there are people who actually play this game and enjoy it.
If I hadn't seen it for myself, I would've never believed that they existed.

10Six consumed my soul for almost a year back when it first released. One of my fondest MMO memories. :P

I played it a bunch, I recall, but was too young to really understand appreciate the game. Or even the genre.
I played Neocron for a little bit. It was okay, but incredibly annoying to stand in front of an enemy... shoot your pistol... and hit the wall behind me.
The aiming was supposed to be based on your skill with the weapon, but man... That was annoying.

my friend bought archlord
after playing it he wished he hadnt
and it was suppose to be pay-to-play but got moved to free play - never a good sign
If you want a grindy MMO, go for Ragnarök Online.
Huxley is on the horizon and looks like it could be maybe not bad.
I'm still dreaming of the day we see an MMO with Eve style politics but BF2 type FPS combat.
Although it isn't an FPS per se, you might look at Hellgate: London.

And re: Huxley... has the game dropped under the radar, or have I just missed all Huxley-related news for like, a year?
> turn on light
Good start to the day. Pity it's going to be the worst one of your life. The light is now on.

I had plenty of fun with PA people when they ran that free "trial" that lasted for a year.
I couldn't hit shit though, so I really liked to play an engineer/transport driver role and repair stuff, place turrets and keep base energy up.
