The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
EA announced today that their upcoming Mercenaries 2, currently in development for Playstation 2, Playstation 3, PC, and Xbox 360, has been pushed back to an early 2008 release. They have not disclosed any specific reason for the delay, but after numerous negative impressions at recent trade shows, and this holiday season already being full of big releases, maybe it’s for the best.
There was no way I was going to get it on release any time before the end of the year, but next year, if I'm done with Mass Effect, Halo, etc., I'd pick it up.
Unless its different enough to the last game then I was never gonna pick it up till it was cheap anwyay. I liked the idea behind it but was just bored of the repetetive nature by the second island and gave up. Any video I've seen has just involved them blowing shit up and not in what appeared to be a dynamic way either.
I have heard mention of you playing as Mattias who gets to run his own organisation of mercenaries. So if we're talking Freedom Fighters lairs, rpg style customisation, Portable Ops recruitment and mercenaries stuff with better combat and more ways to tackle stuff + more interesting and varied missions, we could have a winner on our hands.
Though still probably not at full price.

Its got online and split-screen co-op and thats all I need to know for this game to qualify as a Day 1 purchase.

I'm actually glad its been delayed, as much as I enjoyed the first one(Which was like porn for explosive nuts), this makes one less game I have to buy this year, and another to look forward to next year. And its probably better for the company anyways, with how ridiculous this holiday season is, Mercenaries 2 might have gotten lost in the crowd.
I love Mercenaries. After beating it with Jennifer Mui, I restarted as the American guy limiting myself to capturing the targets alive. Fantastic game.
What I've seen in previews of the sequel isn't inspiring confidence. South America just seems 'meh' as a setting after tearing up the DMZ. Maybe it's because the Central/South American jungle setting has been milked dry by the Tom Clancy franchises. Or maybe I just feel like I've done my part for libertad by overthrowing Mendoza's regime in Just Cause.
I'd prefer an East African setting, personally. Maybe draw inspiration from the events of the Islamic courts' ouster from Somalia by Ethiopian forces. Might be a little provocative, but what, Venezuela isn't?

You might want to check out Far Cry 2, after watching the demo they did at PAX, it looks much more awesome than I expected. 50km by 50km open map of African safari to go around taking missions on from different factions and such. And no god damned mutants that ruined Far Cry 1.
As for Mercenaries 2, everything Ive seen of it looks fine to me, Ive got no problem with Venezuela, and most importantly, Its got co-op now.

I am absolutely excited that this game is being delayed... Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Ace Combat 6, Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros, CoD4, and this?
Really not surprised, last time I saw it, it didn't look near completed. I am anticipating this very much though.
Shame there is no Wii version really, I played the first one on Xbox, and I don't think I could handle buying it's sequel now on PS2.
Except a Wii version would likely be the PS2 version with tacked on waggle.
But it might have a stable framerate, unlike the PS2 version of Mercenaries 1, I don't know how they plan to make Mercenaries 2 run at all on the PS2 when they could barely get the first one running on it.
I am absolutely excited that this game is being delayed... Halo 3, Unreal Tournament III, Mass Effect, World in Conflict, Assassin's Creed, Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway, PGR 4, Blacksite: Area 51, Skate, Timeshift, Orange Box, Haze, Age of Conan, Rock Band, Phantom Hourglass, Army of Two, Guitar Hero 3, Ace Combat 6, Crysis, Mario Galaxy, Quake Wars, Smash Bros, Stranglehold, CoD4, and this?

A delay will be nice.
age of conan got a huge delay, duder.
also all that interests me in the near future is CoD4. though I wish I could say AC6

And you still forgot Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, Galactic Civilizations 2: Twilight of the Arnor, and Geometry Wars: Galaxies...
My only problem with Mercenaries 2 is that in addition to everyone looking like they're made out of cheap plastic, Jennifer looks pretty weird.
I was under the impression that what we've seen so far is nowhere near a finished build.
Some of the explosions in the gameplay vids looked pretty lame to me, like the guard tower blown up with the rocket launcher, but I put that down to the game being incomplete.
Oh well, I'm still highly anticipating this game as Mercs 1 was one of my favourite xbox games. Still, it never really felt like it was coming out this year anyway, what with the lack of... well ANYTHING about it recently.
I didn't know EA was publishing either. So no Han Solo? No Indiana Jones?
Man, FUCK Mercenaries 2.
I never used those because they were badly done, they didn't even get someone to pretend to be Harrison Ford, so I was going around as Han Solo, and still sounding like a chick. What a waste.
The big problem I have with this game is that when you shoot an RPG at a building, or most small explosive weapons, the whole building collapses. The walls must be laced with Semtex.
My problem is that it doesn't look like it controls very well, doesn't look polished in it's destruction, physics, and combat and there's no mention of having to hunt people down ala The Deck of 52 that I know of.
I mean, I loved Mercs 1 but even then it was a little lacking in the 'feel' department.
I did love capturing people though.

However, Stranglehold just came out and has amazing destruction physics, so my thirst for destroying buildings piece by piece has been sated.

I mean, she kind of did in the first game, but it was acceptable. Now she just looks weird.

I've noticed that in most Xbox 360 / Playstation 3 games, to varying extents.
Bizarre. And kind of annoying.
Fuck.
Man, FUCK Mercenaries 2.
And I just don't think things would work out well if they attempted this game on Wii.
Send a pm my way if you're interested.

The right way is to crank the John Williams score, mute your TV, and watch Indy fucking subdue warlords.
