In With The Old (A classic video game multiplayer proposal)

The proposal.
A community of gamers who want to get together at a specific time and play games they've enjoyed playing in the past, online. Quake 1, Quake 2, Command and Conquer, Warcraft 2, etc.

Why do it?
Most of us remember being younger and playing online games that were popular. I'm familiar with quite a few of them, and I enjoyed it all, but now these games have faded from public view to be replaced by newer games such as CS: Source and World of Warcraft.

The mechanics.
Obviously such a community would require slight organisation. IRC is probably the best bet, as a channel is free to create and use, unlike Ventrilo or another online meeting place. For games that used to require a dedicated company-run network, I suspect Hamachi would work fine, although having never used it before, I don't know what kind of limitations it's got. We would meet once a week, or once a day, or however often people like, and play games, either all together, or in groups (If it's something like Warcraft 2). The game could be decided beforehand, so that people have a chance to get hold of it and to voice their opinion on what game they'd like to play.

What do I want from you?
I need to know whether such a community would work. God knows I'd like a comfortable environment in which to get thrashed at Warcraft 2, in which I'd know people and not be ashamed of being new to a game that's so old. Also, suggestions for games that you'd like to play would go down well.

So. Anyone interested?

I thought we had something like this already. Some type of monthly game people played together to see who performed the best. I guess this is more of a multiplayer approach?

I might actually be interested in this. I'm pretty sure I've got Quake, Quake 2, and Warcraft 2 around here somewhere. I used to be pretty decent at Quake, but I suck terribly at Warcraft.

I'm in the Central US time zone, though.

Well, I got my C&C X disc, and I just bought that iD pack from Steam so I have Quakes 1-3.

But I know shit about IRC.... No really, I think I only know what those letters stand for, that's about it.

I would love to do a retro night though.

Anable: Yeah, Lave already put together a community for people wanting to play old games singleplayer and post their scores and best times and whatnot. I guess you could call this a multiplayer oriented version of that. It's about reliving past memories, after all.

Nocren: IRC is easy enough to learn.

The timezone thing is a legitimate concern. For both times at which to play games together and the resulting ping if we're hosting our own servers. Something we can discuss at greater length, hopefully.

Yeah, well while time may be a large issue, it's not as bad for me anymore. I'm west coast btw.

We had a thread for playing old multiplayer games. It died quickly.

I'd be in for some Q2, Command and Conquer (now that it's free we can have more players), DF2, and whatnot.

Well, I only have Quake 1 on steam, but I have the windows 95 version of Warcraft 2. I'm not really a huge fan of Warcraft 2, though. I mainly just used to fool around with the map editor alot.

I don't know what happened to my Carmageddon 2 disc, or I'd love to play that.

A few times we've started Tribes 1 again on here, and it was a lot of fun. I'd love to start up some Tribes 2, but I think there would be numerous problems with that.

    ...

    So, Tribes 1?

I'm up for it, if there are any good servers. Most of the servers use mods.

In addition to these games, I highly recommend Skulltag (www.skulltag.com). The best online multiplayer source port for doom.

It's nice that there are people interested. The problem comes from the organisation. IRC? We can do that easily enough, even with people who aren't familiar with it. Servers? Not so easy. It's not going to be easy to just find an empty server at any point and all jump on, and then hope that no-one else comes along.

What kind of solutions can we use to all play together without suffering major lag?

I played Command and Conquer when I was a kid and would love to play it again now that an alternative online solution has been established.

well in regards to the server we need to find a middle ground. So you are in the UK? That is going to be a problem. I am in CA, so the best bet would be an east coast server. You WILL ping 150+ though and I would probably be around 85-100.

I could try hosting a Tribes 1 server; I've done it on here before, but my connection isn't the greatest and I would likely not be able to host more than 5 or 6 players. Doing this before resulted in pings >200 for everyone involved. Less than 5 players, though, and it might be ok. (I can't do it today though, because I have a wedding in a little while.)

    Is this dead?

    CLEAR! *applies the paddles*

    Ok, I've got a pulse.

I think the first step is to determine who all is interested, and a list of games they have. Alternately, you can slower the scope of the project for now, and select one or two games and look for people that have them to play with regularly. I know I'd be in for some "classic gaming". When I get home tonight, I'll dig through my Big Book o' CDs and see what all I've got for multiplayer.

It's not so much dead, as lacking a solution for how to get gamers around the world on the same server with minimal lag. I'm not sure it's all that possible, meaning that if this were to go ahead, we'd have to have separate groups for UK, US etc.

Can you still play Warcraft 2 on Battle.net? IIRC, the original PC version required some hoop-jumping to play on the bare intertubes.

Last time I used it, Hamachi worked really well for old LAN only games. As long as you're all on broadband, it shouldn't be a problem.

I've got Tribes 2 here, Q3 and Team Arena (I can't find my Q1 and Q2 stuff, I'm sure I will soon though), Rainbow Six: RS (this would make me happier than any other game, I think), C&C Renegade, Homeworld, SiN, BF 1942, Serious Sam, Call of Duty, AoE2, Rise of Nations, Outlaws (yay Lucas Arts western Doom clone!), and BF Vietnam (I think my computer could finally run this horribly demanding little gem), so any of those I would be cool with in the next hour or so. It'd take me a couple of days to dig up my actually old school stuff, but all those games are rapidly becoming nostalgic for me, so I think they deserve some mention.
