hmmm...so who all is up for this still? i've got a character ready for starting whenever everybody wants to start, if we're still going to go through with it..other than that i think i'm just going to randomly play some of my other characters while i wait for our team night...haha....i missed my bard and the necro i was working on
Yeah, I'm not sure. I haven't been logging in since I got the warrior ready to go. I was actually toying with the idea of 2 boxing since I realized the account I'm using now is different from the one I used years ago and so I'd have to go buy the box set to get the bazaar and whatnot anyway.
Unless darkmathus gets the bootcamp running, it looks like you, me, and shadowfire with his ranger Kanneth.
And a lot of people on the fence. Just give in! :P
Nah, no bard yet. We never really picked out a group yet because we weren't sure who was definitely interested. I'll update the OP to reflect that now. Just let me know what his name his later.
I *think* BEAST! was leaning towards enchanter, and I've got that warrior, but we're both flexible in what we play.

yeah the dude i made is an enchanter just to be different than what i've played before, although if nobody else wants to be a cleric i can throw one together so we at least have a healer..ha
Bards and enchanters can work well together, but it's a bit restrictive on your dps to have two crowd controllers. It does give the enchanter an opportunity to use his charm skills though.
So I was poking around the EQ official site and saw they had this "Escape to Norrath" bit where you could play a char up to level 10 free. There were instructions to download the Escape to Norrath program, but when I followed it it ended up having me download the Trilogy instead. When I installed it, it started asking me for billing info.
Anyone know what the story is with that? I'd like to give it a test run first before I decide to pay for it.
You should be able to play without setting up any billing info. The trilogy download comes with a free month of play, but you'll only be given the option of playing on one server. After I downloaded and patched I was able to log in without having to enter any credit card information. This may have been because it was an old account though, I don't know.

Sounds like you clicked the "Upgrade to Everquest" link instead of the download button for the trial.

My padherder they don't it be like it is but it do
The Fires of Heavens guys (or some of them anyway) are trying to do the same thing we're doing and looking to be a lot more successful. It's a once or twice a week level together deal same as what I was proposing. I know these guys used to be known for power gaming (still?) but that's not what this is about. The rules are a little more strict, but a lot of it's common sense stuff.
It sounds like they're not having the problem we're having, which is getting numbers together to start. I'm going to roll up a character for their first meeting this Sunday the 23rd at 5pm est and meet them in North Qeynos outside the front gates. If you can't make that and wish to join up, you can solo to the level cap and come along the next time.
Hell, if it goes well maybe we can still do our thing for a little bit here and there in addition to this. Anyway, I think it's worth checking out at least.

What server? Last I saw they were still meeting on the Combine but I wasn't going to read through the entire thread.
The original post is kept pretty well updated, and the general discussion points in the 11 pages were vent server (optional, but they were looking for anyone who had one available), game server (test was the only other real choice for the late comer option to /testbuff but there was also an exp bonus so that got scrapped), and yeah, that was about it. A little discussion on playing time, but if there's enough to make a decent sized guild out of this, there's enough to start up groups based on time zone.

I guess we'll see how it turns out though.
Well hell, I might go visit them. I'm not a part of FoH but I can't imagine they'd object too much to someone new wanting to play with them. I mean, I'm already sorta doing the same with a new character on the Rathe but that's with just me and a buddy of mine. This would be with a well organized group and all that. I guess I'll just show up tomorrow and find out, eh?
I don't expect it to always be a sunday event. There were already some complaints about football season. It just seemed like for the first time it would be easier until they figure out who's really in and what time schedules are like.
There's no problem twinking to catch up and then gearing appropriately again once you play together.
I'm not an FoH member either. I registered on the boards yesterday, but I'm still awaiting mod approval before I can post. I'll be showing up regardless of getting it or not. :P
that sounds good then, as long as it's not always on sunday..haha
umm, did the combine used to be something else? why do i have two characters on there already?? i don't remember making them, a lvl 1 and lvl 2....weird

I managed to get the Escape to Norrath app off of fileplanet. The problem is, it won't let me log in with the Station ID I created. It says I need to enable the ID for EQ, and sends me to the account page, which asks for an account key which I don't have.
What am I doing wrong? I'm not retarded (I don't think), I shouldn't be having this much trouble getting into a free trial.
Fuck you guys. This thread is making me download the trilogy. I'll play around with the free trial for a while I guess. If I still like it, I may be forced to join you.
Can't decided what to play as though. Most likely a healer of some kind. Any thoughts as to which one. Been out of the loop for so long.
Clerics can't be beaten in terms of healing power, but they can be sort of dull. Druids and shaman offer more variety but severely lack in healing from 30-55 or so when their improved heals start coming in. They are stuck with a 300 hp heal until level 51, iirc. Shaman have their slows and debuffs while druids offer more nuking and ports. At higher levels (say 60+) a druid or shaman can be a group's main healer in most situations.
You'll want someone who can rez, though. A Cleric or Paladin can fill that role, so if you have a War or SK for your tank you'll want a cleric around. With a Pal you can sneak by with a different healer using the Paladin's heals to help out.
I'm not sure what the plan is now since Tal has decided to go to the FoH thing. I was going to finish up the tutorial with my bard today.
So what are the odds that this is when more people show some interest? :P
Well how about we do this. I'll still make that character for Sunday, and anyone else here that wants to give that a shot as well is welcome. From what I can gather, it's going to be a little different from what we decided upon in that they're really trying to recreate the classic environment as in no tutorial, no newbie quest armor, no items whatsoever from post velious expansions. There, it'll be exciting for the tanks to get banded and bronze armor again. Or at least that's the plan.
For the time being, I'm up for starting both groups to see which we like better. Can we be ready for this Tuesday? Completed tutorial and newbie armor quests? We can take our group into Befallen or Blackburrow to start out and probably breeze through most of it given the quested gear we'll have. As long as skorch goes healer, we'll have tank / healer / cc so the rest can be filled with dps or whatever.
And as another option, as I think so far I'm the only west coaster here(?) I can step down from this and stick with the other one to make the playtimes a little more reasonable for this crew. I say this for a couple reasons, one being that I think now we've got a little over 1 full group, and in the middle of the week management hinted towards me that I might be starting 10 hour days very soon. I'm not sure yet what will happen with that, but if it goes into effect that pretty much kills our weeknight groups. Just a thought, but I'll play both if I'm able to.
Found this post wrt Escape to Norrath on the official EQ forums:
The EtN sign-up process is not very smooth. A lot of people have had problems with it ever since it was started.
The critical step you haven't done is to "consume a game key", that authorizes your account to log on and play EtN.
Assuming you already have downloaded the software, here's how to do this:
1. Go to www.escapetonorrath.com
2. sign in by clicking the Sign In/Change User link at the top of the screen
3. Click on the link that says Download Now in the bottom left (do this even if you already have the software, bear with me on this)
4. This takes you to the Download Page. Click the Download button on that page's Step 1.
5. This should bring you to a page that says "Click the continue button below to consume a game key, which will grant the Station Account you are logged in with access to the game. After you click the continue button you will be directed to a download page which contains the files you will need to install the game."
6. Click that Continue button to consume a game key and get your account subscribed to EtN.
If you go through the above steps and it doesn't take you to a "click to consume a game key" page after you click the Download button in step #4, go back to www.escapetonorrath.com, create a brand new Station Account (click on Join Free up at the top) and then repeat the steps above using your new Station account. This is usually what fixes it for most people who are having trouble with this process.
Problem is, I'm not finding this "consume a game key" button anywhere.
edit: I'm on the west coast, too. The 7pm start time is ideal for me.
edit: emailed support to try to figure out the EtN problem. They're closed on the weekends though.
Okay, I may have figured out this EtN problem. I remembered that the last few expansions came with an EtN disc, so I installed that. Upon completing the installation, the page to consume a game key popped up:
Ugh, my download of the software keeps stopping at 8%, and even a download manager can't seem to resurrect it.
You could try downloading just the patcher and then get all the files that way. I could throw it up on rapidshare or something, if you are comfortable with downloading .exe files like that.
To whoever else wants to check out Sunday's events, I'll be on Einar, a human shadowknight. Hopefully I'll see you guys either there, or on Tuesday if we can get everything going.
I think I am going to go with a shaman. I have played both cleric and druid to high level and want to mess around with a shaman in a group setting. So go ahead and add me to the list. Will have a name once I am actually able to create the character.
I had trouble choosing my class for this. On one hand I kind of wanted to try something new (which would have been a pure caster) but on the other I had so much fun with my other shadowknight that I wanted to recreate it. Chain pulling was always a blast whenever I wasn't main tank.
Also, I changed the OP to reflect the first meeting time. This Tuesday at 10pm est in the Plane of Knowledge at the Freeport stone. From there we can decide where to go. PM me or post here if you want some help doing the group tutorial quests or with gathering items for the newbie armors. I'll see what I can do to help. Also let me know if the time is a problem this week. I'll be sure to let you know if it turns out I'm stuck on 10 hour days.
I could do a rogue or magician, played those two way back. Are they acceptable dps classes? Are you guys taking it seriously enough that it would even matter? ;-)
Yeah, I was going to suggest cleric. I don't know how well a shaman will main heal though, that might be enough. Cleric would be great for the res though. But if you're against the cleric, like juice mentioned dps would be the other way to go.
Edit - they'd be fine for dps. I'm not exactly looking for a specific group here, just something that can be pretty self-sufficient.
Shm do well as main healers later on, but they are a bit weak in the early-mid game in that respect. Mostly you'd be missing out on rezzes because, well, xp loss sucks, and getting a dead group mate back to the party can be a pain without it.

Zalkahoz is the name.
Am I supposed to have Riposte at level 4? With a skillcap of 340?!
Edit: now at level 6 Riposte skill level is showing as 0, in red. So weird.
Anyone know what the story is with that? I'd like to give it a test run first before I decide to pay for it.

i've got my enchanter sitting at 9 guys...so i guess until we start i'll be playing my bard....time to swarm kite in PoN

Seems you have to run "escapetonorrath.exe" which should be in the files you downloaded somewhere.

So there's the answer to the account key problem.

Potential fly in the ointment.
