The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I bought myself a used DS Lite the other day with seven games:
New Super Mario Bros
Mario & Luigi Partners in Time
Yoshi's Island DS
Final Fantasy III
Resident Evil Deadly Silence
Super Mario 64 DS
Metroid Prime Hunters
Now it's your turn to recommend me games to buy, since I am a complete DS noob and I have no idea what is good for the system.
One thing: I hate rhythm action games so no Elite Beat Agents please. Go!
Off the top of my head... Worms Open Warfare 2, both Phoenix Wrights (and the 3rd one soon), Hotel Dusk, Puzzle Quest, Etrian Odyssey (it'll rape you through the pants but it'll hurt so good), Trauma Center (this one too).
I can vouch for Hotel Dusk: Room 215. Also, while others may recommend you get the previous Castlevania games first, as long as you at least a very basic understanding of the backstory, you should be able to play Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin pretty well without being left saying "..What's going on?" It can stand alone.
If you can stand the terrible, terrible JRPG feel to the top-down portion of the game, the meat of the gameplay, mech battling, is awesome in Custom Robo: Arena. If you happened to have ever played Virtual On in an arcade, think of that on DS. And with a bunch of lame kiddy shit driving the story behind it.
You should be able to find Animal Crossing: Wild World used somewhere, I imagine...regardless, this is a game you can't really marathon play (unless you get into fishing, which has happened a couple of times to me), but you'll end up going back to it all the time.
Keep an eye out for Worms: Open Warfare 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
I'd recommend Mario Kart and if you like puzzle games you should get meteos(you have to put at least 3 stones horizontally or vertically together so they can form a rocket and blast of your screen).
And if your into adventures you should check out Another Code.It has some very cool DS-specific riddles.

Jump Ultimate Stars. It's worth every single penny of the import price. It's like portable Smash Bros but with Shonen Jump characters instead of video game characters.
And set aside some money for Phantom Hourglass and Contra IV.

Personally thats probably the last game I would ever buy for the DS, the appeal of Smash Bros. is fighting with characters that you actually like, and I consider Naruto, Bleach, Dragon Ball Z, and especially One Piece, to be some of the worst anime out there. Its just not a game for me, Then again I'm generally not an anime fan anyways,
Besides, I'm not really a fan of ever playing games in Japanese since I don't know it and have no intention of ever learning it. I tried playing Ouendan 2 on a friends DS and was like 'what the fuck is this?" and couldn't figure how to change the difficulty or anything, so all I did was suck at it. I'm just gonna stay clear of all imports.

The fun thing about JUS is that you get to beat the crap out of all the anime characters you hate. I love beating Naruto's face in with Dio Brando every now and then. "BELIEVE THAT, JERK!"
If you can find it. I can't put my grubby little hands on this game to save my life.
I walked into my local GameStop on a lark a week ago, and a used copy of Advance Wars: Dual Strike was sitting there on the very end of the very bottom used DS games shelf. I rubbed my eyes to make sure I wasn't hallucinating, grabbed that sucker as quickly as I could, and vaulted over a few customers to get to the register.

How approachable is it in terms of knowing no Japanese? The first one had comic panels you had to manipulate and pretty much required a translation handy didn't it?

The only thing you really would need to look up on would be certain mission objectives or what the "help" characters do. The rest can easily be understood by a little bit of experimentation.

If it's anything like the original. Your brain will explode from the pure amount of japanese text, which killed it for me. I can't build a Koma deck if I don't know what the hell I'm selecting.
As for me, I bought Megaman ZX today, I've only put about an hour into it, but it seems like your standard solid Megaman game.
Edit: And dammit now I'm gonna be tempted to go back and buy all the MM Zero games.
You already have a few platformers there, but a platformer with a twist that looks well worth a play coming out this week is Drawn to Life.
Yeah, I played a demo of that at PAX that someone was distributing wirelessly... Its not the best platformer out there, but I have to say its entertaining to draw wangs for platforms...

You have my permission to hate me now.
If I punch my computer, will my fist travel through the series of tubes and hit you like in those old Popeye cartoons?
Why the hell are all the Advanced Wars games under such limited print?
Because they're poor quality, poor selling games.
lol, but seriously..
I don't know about prior AW games and their history, but the DS one is really old for a ds game.
Publishers always hit a point in time where there is a small, lingering demand for a game that they cannot satisfy simply because the cost to publish another quantity of the game would be more than the amount of profit that they would expect to gain from sales. It's usually typical of games that their greatest sales are in their first few weeks of release, after which they sort of teeter off until there is little or no demand left. Publishers get to a certain point where it's not predictably profitable to reprint games.
In some cases games will be super popular and just keep continuously selling over time, and in some cases you have sleeper hits. With super popular games, publishers just keep putting out small quantities over and over again. With sleeper hits, usually the publisher gives up on the game, and ebay prices skyrocket for the thing. In the rarest of cases, publishers take a risk and rerelease these sleeper hits.. but that almost never happens.
Someone give me a final word on Contact. Is it generally good, mediocre, or bad? I wanted it ages ago, but never got it. B-Day time, so I want to know if it is a candidate.
I haven't played 3 yet (waiting for the US version, want to support Capcom domestically so they bring Gyakuten Saiban 4 over), but if it's anything like PW 1 and 2 then I say YES.

I never played the original, but there is a good deal of Japanese text in the game. However, there's a very handy translation guide on GameFAQs that's quite helpful. I don't even bother looking at it anymore because I've played it so much. You'll eventually learn your way around the game so well that the Japanese text won't even be an issue. The only thing I use any sort of guide for is identifying who some of the anime characters are because the only anime I really know from the game is DBZ.

It's no Final Fantasy, but if you're in the market for a short, quirky JRPG you really can't go wrong. A lot of us went into the game with the belief that it was the next Earthbound (not literally, of course) and were disappointed.
I have quite a few games for the DS and My personal favorites are Rune Factory, Kirby Canvas Curse, Elite Beat Agents (I know you don't want to play it but I like it), Tetris DS, Contact, and Hotel Dusk Room 215.

And I second Phoenix Wright, but it isn't for everyone.

Resort to the internet man. Canvas Curse is absolutely essential. The best use of DS Hardware around, maybe!
You must buy Picross DS. The most addictive 20$ since a 20 dollar bag of cocaine.

I'm sorry that I don't happen to know the cost of cocaine. I don't buy the stuff.
I prefer to make my own. GoodOmen's Old-Fashioned Blueberry and Cinnamon Cocaine. You can find it at local farmer's markets.
That said, I managed to get my hands on a copy of Advance Wars DS, so I am a happy little boy.
