Since my MoO LP thread is running out, I decided to start something a bit grander. Something that may be a bit more interesting to a good deal of the G&T crowd than a 15 year old galatic empire sim. It's taken me a good week and a half to get most of the stuff I need to start this epic quest, but I can't start it until someone on this board uses their legendary "figure out what game this is in ten seconds" power.
Here is what we know so far.
1. It's a game not designed for PC.
2. It took forever to get this game running in Windows XP.
3. At one time this game came in a giant, oddly shaped white box. This is of course unless I'm remembering completely wrong, as I only have the disks.
4. It is not Alpha Centauri.
5. It's not Marathon.
6. It's not an FPS.
7. It is Final Fantasy 7! Now on the PC! With slightly better graphics and much worse sound!
Yep. This is going to be the staging ground for an LP thread for FF7. I'm going to be asking a lot (re:very little) of you guys. Mainly character names, tips on where to go next, which sidequest to do.
I've never played the PC version to its completion, but I've done the regular game more than enough times. This should be fun.
Big ups to Ultravisitor. His reward for getting the LP topic right? Any tie on character names and he'll get to decide. Not a bad deal actually!
Also I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a free alternative to FRAPS. The trial of Fraps just won't do. Thirty second video I could work around, 1 MB bitmaps for every screenie? That would be a serious pain.

Grander in the sense that you can beat Marathon in what? A few hours?
LP is more about the ride than anything else. Go look up the LP archive sometime. 99% of those games have little to no choice. FF VII has a few minor things and a lot of neat hidden shit. A LOT. I could be doing this forever if some of you want me to demo the ridiculous stuff like beating the weapons and getting omnislash. I can't just sit down and play through a whole game of it like I did for MoO, it will be a more gradual trip.

I was just thinking about that guy when I finally picked VII.
I was going to do VIII, to explain the joy of the junction system. Then I couldn't find my disks. Then I thought of doing IX, but then remembered that the PC version never came out. So VII it is.
VII gets a bad rap among people around here. They think they are "too-cool" for it. Who cares if you think VI is better? (It is.) Who cares if it looks a little dated? Falls apart plotwise near the end? It's still a groundbreaking game. Fuck FF VII has minigames that are better than 80% of all other games! It changed the way games were played forever, and like it or not had a bigger historical impact of any game since Tetris or Super Mario Bros. 3. You think Persona 3 or any other really decent RPG in the past ten years would have ever made it to this country without FF VII? Maybe, but probably not.
I got about £20 for the PC version though, so if I pick up the PS1 version I'll be making a profit. I don't know what I was thinking, I love this game. Such awesome music.

Edit: And its not so much that VII gets a bad rap around here as it followed on the heels of VI, which was an incredible game.
