Has everyone gotten a Wii yet?

xboxxerxboxxer Registered User regular
edited September 2007 in Games and Technology
Not trying to be a dick about this, but I'm genuinely curious. Has everyone that wanted a Wii way back in November of 2006 finally gotten one? I know that there are still shortages, and they're not yet available on store shelves, but is this just because "casual" folks just pick them up when they see them? Or are there still packs of shoppers, desperately lining up in front of stores of a console, nearly 1 year after launch?

I was very fortunate, and was able to secure my Wii 1 week after launch (had to stand in line), after I realized that I wouldn't just be able to walk into a store to get one.

I remember that until that weekend, I was getting kind of crazy. Stopping by/calling stores every day ... that sort of thing. Fortunately, after a week, I was able to get one, and then forget about it (it gets relatively little play time -- though more recently since my 360 broke).

It occurred to me that that kind of pent up and unsatisfied demand would be brutal if it were constant for several months -- if the Wii remained tantalizingly unavailable for 10 months, for instance, especially while new games keep coming out.

So, to all the forumers who frequented the Wii Hunt thread from last Xmas, I hope you've all gotten your Wii. If some of you are unfortunate to still be searching, please do tell how that past year has been. :)

Ever since the Wii came out, the local Target has had a sign where the console should be, just stating that "due to high demand, we do not have any Wiis in stock at this time." It hasn't so much as moved. I had to check other cities to get one.

To anyone still looking for a Wii, I would suggest your local game store. The last couple shipments we've gotten at my store have lasted 3-4 days.

We even have a used one that hasn't sold yet.

It's certainly not because of the casuals just picking them up "when they see them." I still don't have one. There's not that many gamers in this town, but you still have to show up at Gamestop an hour before they open to even have a chance to get one (Each of three locations gets 1-3 the first week of every month, usually has a half dozen people lined up). Best Buy and Circuit City (I don't know whether this is a local policy or chain-wide) have both stopped telling customers when they expect new shipments to come in to avoid problems before opening, but when they have them, they're gone well before lunch.

It's pretty safe to say a lot of people out there want them and still can't get them. Nintendo's making a respectable production rate, and for the most part retailers don't appear to be withholding them, they're just barely getting from the truck to the door before people snatch them up.

Edit: about the "high demand" sign at Target, the one here doesn't even have that. At the bottom of the Wii rack, where the systems would usually be is just a bunch of various DS accessories.

I managed to get 3 the week before christmas last year (no, i wasn't being an ebay asshole, the extras were for friends/relatives)by checking a forum thread on redflagdeals.com (canada) about what stores had them available in my city..i think its actually harder to get them now that they're common enough threads like that don't exist, yet rare enough to hardly ever be in stock o.O

I had a guy come from about 45 minutes away to my store because the store in that area said we had them in stock. That was partially true: we had them in the back of a truck that we had just gotten and couldn't unload until we had about three people work six hours straight to get to them. The guy was obviously pissed off, but it still shows that people are willing to drive very long distances just to find the systems.

Two weeks ago was the first and last time I saw a Wii in the wild. I was in Target trying to get MP3 and they had five. I stood at the counter for 10 minutes waiting for them to check the back for the game. In that time 3 different people came up to buy a Wii

    got one at launch 8-)

Made the bloke at Woolworths (in case they don't exists outside of UK, they are a highstreet stuff shop, they sell books magazines toys CDs/DVD) promise to give me one on day 1 if I paid in full.

All the pre-orders at specialist retailers had sold out ages ago, and none would promise me one at launch (they even said, not for a few weeks most likely) so I checkout out the shops you wouldn't think of, and the manager at woolies said that if I pay in full, there and then, that he would personally guarantee me one at release.

Sure enough, the day it came out, I got it, went down the street to get gamestation (iirc it was £45 a woolworths) and haven't looked back. Since then I have bought RE4:wii edition (it was a £7 upgrade, since I sold RE GC for £7 less than Wii edition cost me) Big Brain Academy - Wii degree, and I was given Wii Play by someone on this very forum (can't for the life of me remember who it was though..) I also picked up another wiimote.

I got mine on the first day. The Target by me got 86 of them. You did not even have to stand in line, they still had 20 left over when the store opened that were not reserved by people in line.

I think I have played it a handful of times since then, would have been just as happy if I had not bought and would probably have had more money for my later XBox 360 purchase.

    Oh well.

As for finding them, I see them sitting in Best Buy almost every time I walk in on Sunday's. At least four of them. They are usually gone by Wednesday, but that seems to be the day to go.

    Interesting range of experiences here.

To those who are still looking -- has the search for the Wii become a back-burner type thing, or do you still have the same burning passion to track one down that you had last year? If the latter, have any of you gone on a murderous rampage yet?

I agree that the Wii has not been the box of fun that I'd anticipated it to be, but has served me reasonably well. However, if I were still waiting to get one, I'd probably be batshit loco right now :)

I still have yet to see one in the wild, and I still don't know anyone (personally) who has one. I was interested in getting one at launch, and still am, but I am not the type of person to camp out for it. I always kinda figured that 4-6 months out, I would pick one up if the timing was right (i.e. I had the money to spend + one sitting on a shelf). Surely they wouldn't still have supply problems after that much time, I told myself. And here we are, almost a year out, and we're being told there is still no end in sight for the shortages. Who woulda thunk it?

Here's a fun one. Every time I have had 249.99 in the bank, I can't find one at all, anywhere.

Anytime I'm broke, they appear in Wal-Mart electronics glass cases, taunting me.

Since the Wii has been out I have seen it on shelves once. It sold out within 8 hours.

I sort of want one but most of the games I like are best played with other people, so I got a friend to get one and we play on the weekends. Smash Brothers will be a glorious day.

So, put aside the money and don't spend it until you see that wii. Even if that means theres $250 sitting in your account for a month.

Me, I got mine by camping a best buy on December 17th. Got there 13 hours before it opened the next morning and was the 16th person in line. I think temps dropped to around 20 degrees or so, but I came away with all my fingers and toes and haven't regretted it one bit.

I wanted one back when it was new. I wanted one so bad I could see it when I closed my eyes. Over time however, I have utterly stopped giving a shit. I don't know if it's Nintendo being lax about supplying more units, or if they're actually doing it on purpose to make the Wii seem better than it really is, but one fact remains: I don't care anymore. I'm happy with the 360.

It took me months of trying to actually find one, though now that I have it I wish I'd just bought a different system instead. It's not that I didn't do my homework on games and such, I was just expecting waggle to add a lot to the experience.

... that's the answer that i half expected to hear first, when i made the op.

Not sure whether it's the inevitable drop off in emotion over time, or the realization that the Wii is not the second coming, or some sort of psychological mechanism to prevent insanity, but i suspected apathy would be one of the first comments.

I don't understand, can't people in the States reserve one based on a deposit? That's how I got mine around February.

Put down a deposit for it at my local game store, think it was €50. Next shipment that came in had one with my name on it. I was even first on the list, as the previous shipment had just sold out, even before it arrived in the shop.

I camped out for mine in February a couple of hours before Best Buy opened. I'm really glad I did it and I played the hell out of it for a while, then stopped, but that was mostly because I couldn't afford new games and didn't have anyone to Wii Sports with. But now that I'm at college and some dude on the hall has one, I'm going to bring mine and it'll get a lot more playtime.

I was naive enough to believe people that said I could get one on launch day w/o any problem just by walking in a store.

Needless to say, I didnt got mine on launch day.

I hunted Wii a few times a week for 2 months before finally getting mine at Wal Mart. I was theyre just a bit before the shipment arrived.

I havent bought anything for it since Super Paper Mario (if you dont count a few VC titles) but that will change very soon with Mario Galaxy, Smash Brawl and possibly a few others.

Most stores here won't do reserves except for items that haven't come out yet. If you walk into a Gamestop and ask to reserve a Wii, they laugh at you. (Brutal personal experience there)
