how to get footage from a dvd

quite a simple one this, i'm looking for a way to grab some video footage and audio from a dvd, if anyone has any suggestions?

    It's called "ripping" and I would think due to the questionable legality of the tools used (especially free ones) to perform such thing, I'm going to imagine that Google is going to be your friend.

    fair enough, i can explain a bit more on the dvd i want to rip from if it would help, but sure
